With most major consumer product releases -- think Mac OS and iLife -- Apple has an Up-To-Date program so folks who recently purchased a Mac can get the latest software without having to spend the full price.

In the past, Up-To-Date programs have generally cost $9.95 for an installation DVD. However, with the advent of the Mac App Store, that fee seems to be going away. Buried in the bottom of the OS X Lion press release yesterday was this note about Up-To-Date:
The Mac OS X Lion Up-To-Date upgrade is available at no additional charge via the Mac App Store to all customers who purchased a qualifying new Mac system from Apple or an Apple Authorized Reseller on or after June 6, 2011. Users must request their Up-To-Date upgrade within 30 days of purchase of their Mac computer. Customers who purchase a qualifying Mac between June 6, 2011 and the date when Lion is available in the Mac App Store will have 30 days from Lion’s official release date to make a request.

There you go. Anyone buying a Mac from yesterday through the launch of Lion, gets it free.

Posted in another thread of the forum but to get a better a picture:
I bought a costum built Macbook Pro from Apple's UK Edu store last Friday night (3/5/2011), but it hasn't ship yet nor I had it register at any account (bought it on a guest account), am I elligible for the free upgrade as I will recieve it after the 6th. The credit card hasn't been charged yet.
 
This sentence:

Doesn't seem to make sense in view of the other sentences. Unless I don't know what "request their Up-To-Date upgrade" means.

The release would make more sense if they just said that everyone who buys a Mac after June 6 can download Lion free in its first 30 days of availability.

It means that from the day Lion is released, you have 30 days to request your free copy (most likely a download code) of Lion.

So i ordered a macbook tonight. Will all apps i currently have work on lion? Can i just download it in the first 30 days and instal it once i know all my apps work?

Incorrect. Apple tracks the purchase date. It doesn't have anything to do with registration. Whenever a authorized reseller sells an apple product, they report the purchase to apple, that way apple can properly track it for warranty purposes.

If you purchase it from a somebody that is not an authorized reseller, the purchase date is actually when that entity bought it from apple. This happens with a lot of school purchased computers (including bookstore purchases)

You will get Lion for free. But that doesn't mean you have to install it immediately. Just install it when you think it will work for you. I don't know if each app you are using will fully work on Lion. It may take some time before they are updated.

By the way, if you have just ordered, bought or received your Mac, you can always send it back and get a refund. You just order a new one afterwards to gain the benefit of this promotion. If it's worth the hassle of course. :)

Some people gripe about not getting in on the free deal, but c'mon, it's 29.99 to buy outright and is good for ALL your computers. Nobody does that. Nobody has EVER done that. Free or 29.99 for something this feature rich equals pretty much the same thing to me.
 
But what about the Multi-Touch built into Lion?

Shouldn't we wait for the "Touch" enabled Macs to use that?

Guess they don't want to slow their hardware sales so they offer free upgrades to Lion later, but I dont see how anyone buying a current iMac will be able to use touch gestures without hardware designed for it.
 
How would you register a mac if purchased from amazon ? How would you qualify for an upgrade do you need a reciept?

Well I just registered today and it says it expires next year. So either your incorrect or I'm right.

I bought my MBP about 10 days ago. I just registered it and said I bought it June 7 2011. FREE OS X LION FOR ME!!!!:apple::apple::apple::apple::apple::apple:

Told my wife to buy her iMac last night, am very glad she didn't buy it last week, like we first planned... all that said, it's ONLY $30 for Lion- so not the end of the world. Good on Apple, for this though and for the Mobile Me refund they have in place as well, very fast - very clean service - it points to good things...

Interesting. I guess it depends on Apple's definition of "purchased" as to whether I get this offer with my new iMac I have on order. Ordered 25th May, but not due to be shipped until the second week of July which is when the payment is made. Is then when Apple defines the transaction as "purchased"?

Based on the above, once I receive my new iMac and fire it up, then I should be in the same boat as you, which will be good news. :D

Unless of course Lion has already been released and installed on my new iMac, which makes the whole point moot.

It is because Mac will not automatically up to Lion although you buy it after lion release. For example, the stock you buy is stored on the warehouse for early then lion release. After you buy this item, you can make request within 30 days after buy. However, you buy mac to day, the lion seem that not released within 30 days. So it stated that you can make that request within 30 of release day
 
I ordered a new iMac on June 2nd, but it doesn't arrive until today. I wonder if I'm out of luck.
