Now I can get my new iMac!!! Or Maybe I will wait a week or so for the MBA update...I am soo torn now! Next Gen iMac and MBP's are supposed to get a case redesign and although I love the current uni-bodies, I WANT LIQUIDMETAL!!

Okay, I'm confused... (not enough coffee yet)

So basically, once you bought a new Mac (since June 6th to whenever Lion is released), you have 30 days to request a free upgrade, right?

And then, whenever Lion is released, you have another 30 days to grab your copy (from the App Store), right?

But what about the Multi-Touch built into Lion?

Shouldn't we wait for the "Touch" enabled Macs to use that?

Guess they don't want to slow their hardware sales so they offer free upgrades to Lion later, but I dont see how anyone buying a current iMac will be able to use touch gestures without hardware designed for it.

Magic Trackpad.

You just repeated what was stated in the press release. So, yes, you're right.

Hmm. Do you guys think its worth it to return my iMac and rebuy? It was bought a week ago.

It's just that the box is soooooo heavy.

I knew this would happen if I bought my iMac on release day. Curses.

I don't get what you mean! You bought an iMac on Monday, so OS 10.7 (Lion) will be yours free when it's released.
What has that got to do with your iMac. I bought a MBP Pro 17 that do too, I had waited in case some new hardware was introduced.

What about Mac Mini Server?

I was hoping we'd see a price drop in the Mac Mini Server since some of that price is clearly a premium for the Snow Leopard Server license. Hasn't happened yet...

$300 and a super drive is a lot to pay for an extra hard drive and a $50 bundle of applications.

sooo, we bought an imac on the 5th. has anybody had this happen to them? Is it worth contacting apple?

I ordered my MBP on the 4th and I called them on the 6th to find out if I would get lion free. They called back on the 7th and said that my MBP would be eligible since it would only be invoiced and shipped on the 8th because it was a CTO.

So what I'm wondering is...

If I buy a new Mac between now and release day, do I get to use that free copy for all my machines? (2 other systems that are compatible)

It sounds like the license covers up to 5 systems, right?

The serial number of your Mac contains the date of manufacture. The last two Mac OS X up-to-date programs used this serial number to verify the purchase.

:)

Okay, you may be right. Serial number is a unique ID, with which Apple can determine mfg date, spec and all. But how if that particular Mac has not been sold to a customer until or after Lion release date?

Say the iMac actually manufactured on May 1st 2011, but sold and registered to customer on June 10th, which make the purchase eligible for free Lion. That customer still won't eligible for Up-To-Date program? You sure?

lol its $29 to upgrade.. if you purchased a $1500+ iMac I'm sure $29 wont break the bank.

I know. It's only $30 like everybody said. I also thankful the upgrade cost that cheap. But given a free $30 bonus with your $2000 purchase is always sweet. It's not about "$30 won't break your bank if you able to purchase $2000 Mac".. it's about being generous. I can afford Lion even if it's tagged $129 !! But that's not the point

I would assume so, because it covers 10 computers. but MY question is if I buy a new mbp AFTER lion is released will I be able to install lion on my current mb?

Um, how does manufacture date = purchase date? Unless the serial number issuing process is one of the revolutionary and magical new advancements which has predictive purchase date assignment, then manufacture date is not worth anything in determining when you purchased the machine.

Lion and the Lion Server upgrade are not yet available. So how should the price drop, if Lion is not on the market?

I assume you mean why, not how (the mechanics of price changes is pretty straight forward).

The reason for the "up to date" program is to prevent software updates from overhanging hardware sales. Apple has essentially announced that prices are going to fall a few hundred dollars in the next month. I, and probably a number of people like me, will now delay our purchases until that price drop happens.

I think the news today that servers supplies are being constrained is probably a result of this.

Where are you getting 10 from? It's as many Macs as you own. Anything with your AppleID.

To answer your question, no. If they keep including restore media after lion comes out, those disks will only work with the computers they ship with.

Some people gripe about not getting in on the free deal, but c'mon, it's 29.99 to buy outright and is good for ALL your computers. Nobody does that. Nobody has EVER done that. Free or 29.99 for something this feature rich equals pretty much the same thing to me.

I agree, it is a crazy offer. Makes me want to have more than 1 Mac that can run Lion. :)
