Yeah this is really bad and unexpected. It just feels so rushed....and unorganized. Plus I kinda liked checking out the new features of the machine at the Apple Store where I could get immediate help with a $1400 device if there happens to be a problem.

While I have no interest in buy a uni-port notebook (no matter how thin), the only reason I can see that Apple released it before there was sufficient stock (if that is really the issue), was that they were unsure about releasing a uni-port model and are taking a "careful" approach by letting a few dribble out and see what happens.

Yeah you can always argue for that... there is a benefit from doing that. I can see it. Catch bugs and rather than replace a gazillion macs you replace a few. However, I think they had it right before. As people find issues just address the issues. I'd rather them not go overboard trying to prematurely minimize cost since people have shown they are willing to buy whatever it is they release.

I disagree. I think this is a new shift in product launch strategy that's more or less completely opposite to what we are used to. Retail is already bombarded by the watch try-ons, and adding a new MacBook to the mix is bound to make it even worse. Like it or not, Apple, under Angela Ahrendts, is pushing online orders for new products. I think she was hired for this exact reason: to make product launches (and the stores) feel less like a free-for-all and to make the entire retail experience feel more premium.

Eventually, I'm sure that the stores will get stock, but fulfilling online orders first will temper customer expectations. It also has the benefit for customers of not having to make return trips to the store just to "check stock". Order it online and you have a good estimation of when your product will be delivered. Many people have already figured this out with the iPhone.

So, why does Best Buy have physical stock then?

I remember when I bought my TiPBG4 in 2/2001 at CompUSA, people at AppleInsider were moaning about that store having stock while people were being quoted 2 month wait times for their order.

As of today they said no in stock
Fairview
Markville
Eaton centre
Upper Canada

Forgot to mention, Eaton Centre guy said he knows some stores have it now. And they expect they have the new macbook soon.

But when i talked to other reps by phone, they had no such knowledge.

Nah, the Ala Moana Apple Store is listed separately. There are only three Apple Stores in the entire state and they're all in Honolulu. When they said, "Hawaiian Village", the only location I could think of was the Hilton Hawaiian Village... which is a hotel and there isn't an Apple Store there. I think they actually meant the Royal Hawaiian Shopping Center.

Kahala Mall
Waikiki Strip
Ala Moana Mall

Am I missing one?

Been in the Apple Store in Munich Rosenstrasse yesterday: Nothing at display or to buy...

Apple Store in Conestoga mall, Waterloo Ontario still has none on display and none to buy. However the staff there told me just now they are expecting some for display within the next couple days.

while BestBuy obviously doesn't have the 1.3 BTO option, they do have a bunch of 1.2 512gb in all colors available for order. I ordered a Silver 1.2 512gb day before yesterday and just received a text from UPS that they delivered it this afternoon. Now I just need to get off work to go home and check it out!

So, I'm guessing Best Buy might give better odds to recieive one...

Exactly.

2 days BestBuy vs 4-6 weeks from . In the little time I've spent on it, I am super pumped on this macbook and think it will be great for what I plan to use it for. Don't plan on it being my main computer, but I haven't touched my my MBP or my iPad since UPS delivered it yesterday evening.

Way more pumped on this purchase than any Watch

Seems UK stores have them on display but nothing in stock. Just been to Westfield, White City and they have had them since April 24th (coincidence?), but nothing in stock.

Said 4-6 week shipping estimate was probably conservative so to order online and hope.

Got the impression they were quite disappointed with the lack of information and availability.

I was just looking at best buy.com - the silver base model (1.1/256) ships in a day. Every other model I am seeing says 2-4weeks. Thinking about pulling the trigger... I think this will replace my iPad Air 2 and my MBA 13"...

I already gotta Air 2... And if I was to get one. It would definitely replace it... But the fact I gotta wait on only allows me to rethink it.. It's quite expensive to just be a Air 2 replacement..

Bahnhofstrasse, Zurich, Switzerland: Zero display units.
I believe, this is also true for the other stores.
Resellers list a two months delivery period...

They (AAPL) even have an office here (about a 600m from the store), but I guess it's a tax-vehicle mostly...

UK 12" MacBook Retina Order Shipped

I ordered a 512GB SpaceGrey on launch day, April 10.

Received dispatch notification yesterday (May 18th). Estimated delivery May 26th.

Original estimate was 4-6 weeks (May 19- June 01).

Considering units are now appearing in PC World and John Lewis before "first batch" online orders are fulfilled, Apple's new strategy of encouraging people to buy online appears very curious to me.

So, no stock in UK Apple storess to buy (still), online orders have to wait 6 weeks, but lo an behold units start appearing in selected non-Apple retailers before first batch orders are delivered. As they did in BestBuy in the US (I believe).

All a bit rubbish IMHO.
