Yup.
And that "iToony" business will be available for free almost instantly as well.
It's going to be a shock to some of these people when the apps they think they can charge $2-5 for 200 lines of code end up popping out for free all over the place.

It's true enough that a lot of these apps will have free clones but you do have to keep in mind that unlike for normal PC/Mac/Web games, there is an entry fee to develop for the iPhone. People who want to have an app in the store have to pay $99 whether it will be free or not, which I think will mitigate the glut of free simple apps that would appear if development was totally free (which I'm 100% sure is part of Apple's intentions for charging that fee).

Well, this is what will happen:

People who are legit developers who make quality games or worthwhile applications will see some of these things (Paint-type photo editor, Pong, etc.) going for a couple bucks and say, "Well that's kind of cool, but I could make that in 10 minutes... why the hell would I pay for it?"

So they will.
And they'll still make money on their quality apps.

Has anyone announced a PIM (Personal Information Manager)?

I need real To Do's with alarms, Reminder Alarms, etc. And I don't want to have to enter everything as a meeting for it to alert me at the appointed time.

iCal?

I was just looking for some updated information, and i found this, its my first post, so go easy on me lol:rolleyes:

i like the iToony! though i dont have an iphone... and i wont have it...
maybe im gonna be able to do so on the pics that i have on my ipod touch... hopefully

yes... it will work on your ipod touch. it isn't as compelling since you'd have to get the pictures there from the computer, which means you could have decorated them with something on your computer.

there is also the feature of decorating stuff directly from the web or from your flickr or picasa photo albums, so you may find it useful on the ipod touch.

i think you might be missing a bit here with iToony, but then i worked on it, so i guess i'm biased. of course, it started out as a 10 minute "paint-type" app, but kinda evolved into so much more.

another similar product that should be out is Sketches. Sketches started out as a simple jailbreak, etch-a-sketch and now is much, much more than that. i don't know what they plan on charging, if anything, but i know i'll certainly be trying it out on my phone, whatever the charge.

certainly, it won't last forever, but i'd guess that for a time, at least some people will buy iToony...

more info on iToony is available at:
http://www.itoony.com

i don't know if sketches has a website, but there is a nice article here:

Keep in mind that anyone can DL the SDK and compile and run code on their own iPhone. For those putting out "free" apps and don't mind posting the source for all to use, they can just post it up somewhere on the web and we can just DL and compile and install ourselves.

And I'm sorry, but it takes a heck of a lot more than 200 lines of code to write a decent app, especially a graphical one!

yeah.. i wish we could have written iToony in 200 lines or less... the first finger drawing app was prolly near that, but try to do anything more than a simple one color drawing line that you can't save or share or do anything else with, and you _may_ be able to get under 200 lines.

it is good, however, that people think it can be done so easily, however... that means we made it look simple, which is exactly what we were going for. draw a circle, you get a speech bubble, draw a line, you get a caption... swipe two fingers backwards does an undo. click on the screen and get a fade-in menu. simple to use... a pain to write (but fun to write too).

To everyone complaining about having to pay for apps when free ones are readily available, please keep in mind you are mirroring the same argument people had when apple opened iTMS... Why pay for them when MP3s are available all over the internet for free!!! We all know how the iTMS turned out.
$.99 per song...worked out great
$1.99 per TV show...worked out great
Movies and HD content, all working out great.

The App Store will work out great!

the difference between iTunes and the AppStore is that the free MP3s your talking about are also illegal MP3s. The artists wanted to charge money for their hard work, as they should, but people found ways to distribute them for free anyway. However, for someone like me, who doesn't want to use a potentially dangerous program like limewire to get music, iTunes is the easiest and cheapest option unless I want to pay a monthly fee. And I just don't download enough music for that to make sense for me

On the AppStore, however, free apps are both safe and legal to access. So its a completely different argument as to wether they succeed or not.
It is my opinion that there WILL be people who want to write apps for themselves to use. To use these apps, they will pay the $100. And then, they will put there apps on the AppStore FOR FREE and most of these simple apps that are asking for money will go by the wayside.

After all, the best way to get paid for writing apps is to start by writing apps for free!

Nope. You have to pay $99 to put any kind of app on any actual phone. However it does appear the way the Ad Hoc will work is that one person who has paid the $99 can give their app (or any app they have source code for) to 100 other people.

I'm definitely looking forward to the Movie App as it will be very convenient especially with the Dark Knight dropping next weekend  I'm all for Connect 4, but I'm on the fence about the $5

Wait a sec...why was this thread tacked onto the end of the "confirmed Apps" thread? NONE of these apps are confirmed at all as coming to the App Store at launch. They are just Apps people entered into a contest for "best App" to iLounge, there's no rule in that contest that the App has to be a launch App (they have to be launched by July 25), in fact I'd bet at least some of them aren't in the official developer program yet and are just hoping to launch shortly after the App Store does.

i can confirm that iToony is in the app store and ready for sale.

fwiw, our next app is likely to be free because the model is more built around getting alot of users than making money off any one individual.

i'm guessing that most of the free apps on the app store will be similar. i've seen a number of portal-type apps, event directories, mlb app, etc.

also, i know what people are talking about when it comes to free apps derailing the pay for ones. i had written a remote control for my music server here at home... i was just going to use it here, until i realized i could adapt it to work with itunes. the day after i started thinking that, i read on this site that apple was releasing a free iphone app to control itunes... oh well. but that is the risk you take when you do this type of development.

One of those medical software firms that Scott Forstall raves about should so do a version of the Operation board game for the AppStore.

I dont see the purpose of this thread. When Appstore gets released I bet you'll find all Apps @ apple.com, in the "downloads" section.

I bet you won't, just like you don't see all the music that they offer on iTunes there either.
