Re: iPad 2 compatibility: I hope they've done some work to optimize it for this old hardware, because A lot of apps run painfully slow on iOS 9.

All A5/A5X devices are not supported anymore. Apple messed up in their website.
how can you be sure? :p

its highly prob its a mistake and you won't get the ios 10 upgrade. the ppt didn't have ipad 2 on it when they presented it.

Oh my, glad to see my iPad 3 still supported. It still runs fine too. But then again I've got a load of things disabled like background processing and gestures (it speeds it up!). But for browsing through photos or just reading forums it's really useful.

I'm positively surprised that my iPhone 5 is still supported. I honestly thought they would drop all non 64-bit devices. Woohoo to another year on this phone!!

*Before anyone says why I'm still using this phone, it's because it's still works perfectly fine and I don't see any reason to get a new one when the OS still supports it. Also, I heard that the 2017 iPhone will be the major redesign and stuff so the timing is just right for me to upgrade next year.

Both of you are wrong. The iPhone 4 was already dropped for the iOS 8 update and is therefore stuck with iOS 7.1.2.
I should have been more careful to exactly write what I knew, which was that the iPhone 4 doesn't run iOS 9. Or rather what I really meant that the iPhone 4 was not dropped by iOS 10 but already earlier.

This is kinda weird: iPad 2/iPad Mini/iPod Touch 5 with A5 CPUs are still supported but iPhone 4S with the exact same specs is not.

I wonder what Apple's BS explanation for that is? All I can think is Apple plans to make those compatible devices so slow with the update to force people to upgrade. Maybe a large number of people still use the 4s in some countries and Apple didn't want to irritate them, possibly turning them off to future Apple products. Then again, maybe it was an error on Apple's part to omit the 4s on the list???

I agree, it's very slow, running 9.3.2 on 4s and mini. But, since my primary device is 6s plus, I didn't expect an update on the old devices.

I'm sorry, and i wanted this to be true, but i found a screen-shot that points to this simply not being true.

A5 DEVICES nowhere to be found :(

Additionally, this is the response i got through DM from Apple Support Twitter, hinting that the site might get updated later on:

Whilst i am glad the iPad 2 and 1st Gen mini are still supported, i wish they would optimise them a bit more. iOS 9 is ok for most apps, but using Safari on them is painful and quick web browsing is what i use a tablet for most.
My iPad Mini is so slow on iOS 9 that I'm surprised it's on the list. I'd take less new features for more speed.

My iPad Air is already uncomfortable to use on 9.3, I am shocked that ios 10 will be available on the iPad 2..?! Some optimization would be really nice........

The iPad 2 is immortal

Apple today announced iOS 10, the next major version of its mobile operating system. The software update is compatible with all iPhone, iPad, and iPod touch models currently capable of running iOS 9, except for the iPhone 4s.

iOS 10 is available in beta for registered Apple developers starting today, while the update will be seeded to public beta testers in July. The free software update will officially launch in the fall, presumably alongside the iPhone 7 in early to mid September.

iOS 10 features redesigned Messages, Apple News, Apple Music, and Photos apps with several new features, a brand new Home app for controlling HomeKit accessories, a Siri SDK for third-party app developers, and much more. The website's been updated to show that all A5/X devices have been dropped. This lines up with their keynote slide.

That is so bloody frustrating. Sounds like Apple cut them off pretty late in the process!! :( Wish they could have just released it as an experimental release for devs.
