I am VERY pleased to announce that Sony's USB Memory Stick Duo reader works 100% perfectly with the iPad Camera Connection Kit.

This is tremendous news for those with Sony cameras and videocams that utilize the Memory Stick Duos.

Question: Can you confirm that when media gets imported to iPad via the Connection Kit that the files are not touched/converted/scaled/downsized by the iPad?

When I go on vacation, I shoot Sony 720p HD Camcorder Video and Sony 12 Megapixel Still Photos. I need a notebook to move the movies/stills off of the Memory Stick Duo's to open them up for more shooting the next day. Part of my dream of traveling without a notebook is the ability to dump my media onto the iPad in its original, high-quality format without the iPad messing with it and then getting home and pulling it off the iPad in pristine quality.

Any thoughts?

TIA

BJ

Tested and works:
Verbatim 15-in-1 memory card reader
(CompactFlash Type I, CompactFlash Type II, Microdrive, Memory Stick, Memory Stick Duo, Memory Stick PRO, Memory Stick PRO Duo, Memory Stick MagicGate, Memory Stick MagicGate Duo, miniSD Card, MultiMediaCard)

looks like this:

EDIT: Just tried a Wacom Intuos 3, and got two error messages - one saying it's an unsupported accessory, and one saying it consumes too much power. After dismissing these messages, the unit doesn't work, unsuprisingly.

which wacom did you test? i have the bamboo pen + tablet and can try as soon as i get my ipad around the 20th.

Has anyone tried a USB DAC other than the m-audio Transit?

The transit, IIRC, uses a proprietary driver.

I've tried using Apogee-one DAC, but got the "too much power usage" warning message :(

Way too much power. It has to be Class Compliant, 16bit, and able to be powered via USB.

The reason the M-audio Transit won't work is, because its 24bit and not class compliant

Anyone try the Apple USB --> 56k Modem. I have no idea how you could dial with it...

Thatw a good sign for my nuforce udac then. Bestbuy has 20% bing right now so I might go for it. $24 is still too overpriced for a usb port.

AT2020 Mic and wireless keyboard

Got my iPad Camera Connection kit today, and I have tried it with an AT2020USB microphone and a Verbatim Wireless Slim keyboard and both work great. The only issue is that the AT2020USB microphone doesn't work with the whistlephone app. Not too sure why. Maybe a sample rate incompatibility?

Just got my Camera Connection kit 4 days early. Glad I worked form home today. :)

Here are a list of things that I have tried.

Worked:
- 16 GB SDHC Kingston card (via the SD Card Reader)
- 4 GB SDHC Kingston card (via the SD Card Reader)
- 1 GB SD Kingston Card (via the SD Card Reader)
- Panasonic DMC-ZS7 Point & Shoot Camera (via the USB Camera Connector)
- Nikon D300 DSLR (via the USB Camera Connector)
- Bowers & Wilkins MM-1 external powered Computer Speakers (via USB Camera Connector)
- Sony MRW62E Multi-Card Reader w/ 4 GB Extreme CF Card (via USB Camera Connector)
- 32 GB iPhone 3GS (via USB Camera Connector)

Did Not Work:
- Nothing fell into this category. :)
- UPDATE: 8GB and higher CF cards in a USB card reader.

I don't think I have anything else to test.

Let's be careful about summarily declaring card readers as "compatible". The amount of power the reader requires changes with the type of card. I have yet to find a USB card reader that doesn't run headlong into the "too much power" error trying to read CF cards in the absence of a powered hub.

I was just about to update mine that both my reader and friends reader would not work with his Extreme III 16GB or 32GB CF cards.

My 4GB cards worked fine. He did not have his 8GB cards to test.

What can you transfer when you plug your iPhone into your iPad? Is it just the photos only?

when you plug your iPhone into your iPad via the CCK, on the iPad you'll see whatever is in your iPhone's Camera Roll album

so photos and videos can be transferred

I initially tried a couple USB audio devices all of which gave me the "Not enough power" error message.

I then tried these same devices with a USB powered hub and most of them worked, so you should try a hub if your having problems.

Surprisingly, a Korg PX5D Pandora Guitar and Bass Multi Effects Processor works without a USB hub. It works without the hub because it also has batteries, so it is either running completely off batteries, or is supplementing with USB power (I suspect the former).

It's name "Pandora" shows up in the iPod library volume area (very slick). This device is rather sophisticated.

Also, another cheap USB guitar/Audio interface I got of Ebay works without the hub.

I also have read that that Griffin USB audio device works without a hub

WARNING: a little off topic Audio rant.

I just noticed that 3rd party apps can now access the built-in iPod music library with iOS 4 ('Amazing Slow Downer' latest build now does this).

This was always a HUGE PITA because you had to use wifi or some other idiotic method to transfer sound files to the 3rd party audio app. This made using these apps rather unpleasant.

The rant is that Apple's latest high tech wonder is still running the old OS so it can't do this.

You can add DAC (Digital to Analog Converter) to the list. Makes the iPad a touch screen music server.
