No, I agree with you - it's not a perfect system, but for most people, most of the time, it works great.
The emailing thing is a neat trick too, BTW - but it doesn't work with capitalization. I just tried entering the name of a dep't store by my house (eCute) but after emailing myself, all the iPhone did was autocorrect to all lower case. After adding it to my contacts, it autocorrects with the correct capitalization. Maybe most people don't mind, but since I use SMS/email a lot of non-English proper names, the capitalization thing is kind of important to me. FWIW.

99.9% of the time, it works great. The times it doesn't, just send yourself a quick email with the word you wish to type, and the iPhone will add it to it's dictionary. Even easier than adding fake contacts.
