I guess I've never seen HDR done properly. I just Googled HDR images and the ones that popped up on the images tab of the Google search are, for a lack of a better word, "stylized". Maybe it's just a beauty is in the eye of the beholder thing.

You're looking at tone mapped HDR photos. Those are intentionally made to look like that. The examples below are also HDR.
