Since they were able to wring better performance out of the current generation, my guess is that future generations will focus more on energy optimization to enable thinner watches.

Yeah, well the first ever iPhone didn't have 3G, and the OS couldn't even do video recording or copy/paste. First ever MBA was massively overpriced and incredibly slow/underpowered.

Always best to wait a few gens if you want the 'true vision' of Apple tech. True then, true now.
