Live Coverage of the Apple Media Event (August 7, 2007)

Mini specs:

cheaper:
CD 1.66GHz --> C2D 1.83GHz
512MB RAM --> 1GB RAM
60 GB HD --> 80GB HD
Combo Drive --> Combo Drive :mad:

better:
CD 1.83GHz --> C2D 2.0GHz
512MB RAM --> 1GB RAM
80 GB HD --> 120GB HD
Superdrive

I can't see from the page yet, but I assume it's also got 802.11n draft as well.

New mini specs - 1GB standard on both models. 80GB and 120GB.

You know what? The low end Mini is a great value! It includes iLife and is the whole OSX experience including programming systems, is a bit slow on graphics but not to the point of being truly crippled. It uses the lower speed version of Apple's full boat processor of the moment. It seems to be a real value.

I might get 3-4 of them as gifts.

Rocketman

Well I am pretty pleased that I purchased .Mac from toysrus last week at £29! god knows why they were selling them off? The woman in there thought they were stopping selling Apple computers?

I now have 10gb :)

For those who were concerned :)
This is the wired version. Wireless has no numerical pad.

CD 1.83GHz --> C2D 2.0GHz

That was my last remaining concern: that they might not have done C2D. Great news! I shall treat myself soon methinks, I know they're not blazingly fast in comparison to the bigger models, but compared to the 1.33 G4 12" Powerbook I have right now (my only Mac so far) it'll probably be like lightning hehe

Since when did gamers look to Macs?
Have we really given up so easily? Why are we not advocates for the growth of Mac gaming? Would it not be healthier for the strength of the Mac platform to insist on rectifying the situation? Apple has chosen to not provide an xMac - does that mean we as consumers should shut up? Shouldn't we at least see what can be done within existing constraints?

Although this might make up for it... DAMN the BT keyboard is beautiful. I wish they'd aluminum-up the mouse so they matched though... At least make it black...

Perhaps I'll order a black mouse from Colorware.

EDIT: They don't sell separate mice. Argh.

since there is about zero chance of making i through the 918 posts before me, sorry if this was asked, but is apple going to release a quicktime video of the event later? I remember usually seeing at least a link that says we will post the video soon, but i don't see anything in quicktime or the main apple.com page.

Why do so many people care about mac mini? It always seemed kinda dumb to me.
The iMac's video card is inadequate for MSWindows gaming. On the other hand, the video card is overkill for non-graphics programming, web browsing, and other business office oriented stuff. I already have a display that I like. I love OSX, but I'm not paying $1200 when I can get something that fits the bill at a little over half the price.

That should be enough reasons. It probably makes business sense for Apple not to fill every product niche. But that doesn't mean it makes sense as a consumer. If the mac-mini isn't reasonably price competitive, then that means Apple doesn't get my business.

I don't know about you guys, but I'm checking out the iWork '08 videos online and it looks really good! I'm really digging Numbers.

Numbers looks awesome man. It reminds me a lot of Quantrix

At first I thought no num pad on the BT keyboard was a huge problem, but after thinking more about it I don't think it will be that big of a deal.

I do most of my computing on my MBP so it will be pretty much no different for me.

It's always been time for gamers to look elsewhere. Why on earth would you want to play games on a Mac :p What few there are actually available!

PC or console for gaming. Choose the correct tool for the job :)

My Mac Pro games quite well, thanks. More than enough machine for any game currently on the market. :p

novice CPU question....

how much of a difference is the 2.8GHz Intel Core 2 Extreme over the 2.4GHz Intel Core 2 Duo (yes, i know there's a .4GHz difference - but what's it really mean to me?)... is the Extreme a 4 cpu chip? is the extra performance worth it?

Thanks

Yeah, I was glad to see them go to C2D, so now they have 64-bit capable across the line. The new mini's are packed with the guts of essentially the previous rev of MacBooks (Nov '06) which is what I am on now, and am very happy with. I think this brings them back up to being a pretty decent competitor in $600-800 range.

I agree, that price point has to be there - and to be honest I'm amazed that they've kept it, considering some of their other choices (portable non-crap graphics start at $2000, real expandability starts at $2200).

If you haven't found a reason yet, you never will.

what i said was kind of taken out of context. I use my mac for everything but still have to use my pc for gaming. that quote was taken in reply to imac still not being useful for gaming
