social networking users will love this... But i'm not one of them ...

Since it takes up double the space, it shouldn't matter that much.....

Oh, who cares? These videos waste so much time. Get straight to the point. We want gif-like videos. The worst are those speed-test videos—you could literally edit out everything but the comparisons. But nobody does. Have some respect for your readers (or watchers).

Another thing about these Live photos is that you can send them via iMessage and someone on an iPhone that isn't a 6S or 6S+ can watch them by tapping on them also. Did it yesterday with a 5C.
They'll "play" on at least an iPhone 5, too.

I used to be in the S cycle. iPhone 6 was my first jump out. Regretting it a bit now. Both 3D and Live Photo's are really great S features, among the hardware upgrades. Looking forward to getting my 7 with no home button. Wonder if they will ever bring the glass back back, still my favorite.

I keep going back and forth between "gimmick" and "gimmick but keep an open mind". :) It's really not that complicated. It's a .jpg and a 3 second .mov file. However, in my opinion the low frame rate of the .mov file makes it unsuitable for most common point-and-shoot moments. Probably in the right situation with the right forethought it will be OK.

This link is to a shared One Drive folder containing the .jpg and .mov files from a Live Photo I took (.mov files are prohibited from being attached here).

My photo is definitely not the use case Apple is looking for. As I saw in some article, the less motion the better and the motion should be secondary to the subject of the photo. Like a kid standing still on the beach with waves in the background. However, creative folks might make something awesome. I'm looking forward to see what they can do.

Only Apple could get away with moving pictures as a tentpole feature.

Moving pictures=motion pictures=movies.

I've never used Vine, but I'm guessing that's what inspired this. I think if it were any other company, the press would be calling it a Vine-like feature, and there would be headlines like, "Do 6-second Vines need to be even shorter? Samsung says so!" And John Gruber would be writing some tripe about Samsung being out of ideas and copying everyone.

Copying Vine would be a step up for Samsung. Their MO is not to borrow great features from different companies and industries, but to blindly and slavishly copy every feature and design from the leading competitor, in this case Apple, with little interest or understanding of how it might or might not be useful for their customers.

Instead of thinking of ways of improving the experience, they would likely just copy it exactly, but perhaps with a single distinguishing difference that sounds good on paper even if it offers no benefit for the user. My guess would be to brag that it captures a 4 second experience instead of 3 seconds, which they could advertise as "33% better". Or they would entirely undermine its simplicity by making the duration fully configurable and promote it as offering more "choice".

So no, I wouldn't expect Samsung to copy this from Vine, but I would not be the least surprised to see them copy it from Apple. Right now, someone at Samsung is probably looking up "live" and "photos" in the thesaurus to come up with their own branding for it - assuming there's anyone left to do so after all their layoffs.

I've played around with it and didn't find it as "magical" as expected. An example of "magical" was when Apple introduced the panoramic photo feature, which was dead simple to use and produced stunning photos with minimal thought or effort.

Live Photos, as demonstrated by Apple, can produce very nice results, but I think it requires more planning or trial and error to capture anything worth sharing, hence it's less "magical".

i'd much prefer the photo didn't have the pre-pic movement. just start from the moment of a photo and continue forward.. as it is now - like the dog in the video - seems disorienting jumping back in time. it'd be nice to have settings to adjust this.

Others have said they'd prefer that the photo didn't have the post-pic movement.

I think that the "3D touch to activate movement" is not the best way to use Live photos. Slideshows with the pre- and post-pic movement as part of the transition effect would be cooler.

Something I noticed about Live Photos is that in the photo library they will not make that little "animation" as you swipe if you have reduce motion on. I wish you could choose to have it on even with reduced motion but I'm just being picky.

What a ****ing useless gimmick. This is the kind of false feature we've been used too, that you'll use a few weeks, then realise you can share them with almost nobody or nobody gives a ****, and so give it up.

No it's a great feature, will never get old to me. I don't share loads of photos so that isn't a big deal anyway.

The pics you take with it are great for special moments.

Why should what other people think affect how you use it?

No not at this time. It will revert to just the photo in anything that can't read the live photo.

My husband who has a 6s+ went hiking yesterday with his phone and grabbed some Live photos that he just showed me this morning. Amazing detail first off. I could see all the rocky detail on the opposite side of the dried riverbed area (Calif drought). There was a small pond left on the riverbed floor with some fish and frogs still surviving. You could see the green algae in stagnant spots. It really had a "mossy" feel to it. The clarity of the photo looking into the water of the pond was stunning. The photos he took really blew me away. I have a 6+ and didn't think I would feel the need to upgrade....then he touched the Live photos and I could see why this will be a hot feature that people will want to upgrade to. The fish in the pond were moving and the water rippling. The photo he took of some deer in a grassy field suddenly started frolicking in a circle with each other. That was such a special moment of his hike to share later with me was all I thought. I haven't spent any time looking at anything else the phone does over my 6+ but I'm already wanting to upgrade.

Oh and he air dropped the photo of the deer to my 6+ and I could view it on there as a Live Photo. So cool. You need to hold your finger on the photo the whole time while viewing to see the entire action. I tried downloading it to my older MBP and it wouldn't transfer. Hubby thinks it's because that machine is still on older software so I'll upgrade soon and retry the download. The photo appears in my Photos album on my 6+ as two images. One with a .jpg extension and the other with the same name but a .mov extension.

This is super cool and if you have an Apple Store in your area, you should stop in at some point and check it out. I think this is a mover especially for people on older phones...and likely for some of us still on a 6 or 6+.

I posted above before getting a chance to read the whole thread. I don't see Live Photos as something one would like to do all the time but for example seeing the deer come to life in my example above really was special to me. It's just a little something the average user which I am will find makes their phone a bit special.

While many here have expressed a desire for more of a continuous .gif action, I personally despise going to a webpage and seeing ads, videos etc auto animate. Despise it.

I'm glad you need to touch hold to see it. Keep the animation control in the hands of the user. Don't need to denigrate my web experience even further than it is with all those creative type who want to force stuff on the public just because they can without ad blocking or a content provider that is restrictive on how his site is used...or I'll add abused. No doubt advertisers are already anxious to try to use Live Photo in some fashion.

I think it's a great feature. I got a photo of a pint of Guinness settling for my lock screen. It's pretty cool - the bubbles go both up & down.

It definitely changes the lock screen. Guinness is a great idea - mine is a full-body peek-a-boo with my son. He pops through the door and onto the screen, then disappears again. It's a blast.

I see this as just another tool in the box you can pull out and use when the time is right. I don't think they meant it as the only tool in the box. I think people judge it too deeply as though it were. One thing I am sure about is creative people will have a blast with it and find ways to impress us all with it. Some will even turn it into a profession and retire on it somehow.

Live photos is cute but it really needs an indicator to let you know when the post-1.5 seconds are over.
Huh? It does. There's a live indicator for the entire capture.

In 9.1 it automatically turns off recording if you put your phone away, which is great.

I agree that the blur is jarring. I would have preferred a simple fade from the still.

I think Apple is supposed to fit this by cutting the blur away. Though people will learn to shoot with this and get decent results in the future (though, low light is a bit of a iffy case I think).
