I don't know if it's Siri that can't do that, or Apple's horrible HomeKit networking. This is a process that should take less than 500ms after the command is finished, but on average takes 10 seconds or more, if it completes at all.
It's not even THAT complicated. I got an app on my phone that comes with the door lock that was forced upon me. The app offers shortcuts. In theory all you'd have to do is activate Siri by lifting your wristwatch to your mouth, or pushing the voice control button on the steering wheel, or pushing the Siri button on the phone, and say "unlock front door!".

Sometimes it works (although she always says "OK, setting, unlock front door), other times nothing happens, or "I'm sorry, I can't do that" or "you need to unlock your phone".

For me, the reason I know it’s Siri is that if I click the button in the home app, things happen immediately. There is never a delay then.

I remain skeptical.

…perfect way to approach tech…ala That space odyssey movie by Kubrick haha

Nah but that guy said call it Shirley!! lol like Lavern and Shirley?? lol

Apple should open the damn wallet and buy the exclusivity rights for C3P0, Rosie (jetsons), dot matrix (spaceballs) oh! And of course Eve from Wall E…maaan, Apple needs to be fun again and not so boring with the same releases yr in and yr out

: (

(I love you Apple! Please don’t kill my 16 max battery when I upgrade to iOS 26!)

…I think I said earlier they should call it iRis

Hopefully they don’t announce it alongside the iPhone 17 models and then say “Available Early Next Year” and then it gets delayed

Hopefully they just use somebody else’s model and pay enough to integrate privacy into it for Apple customers.

I can’t imagine any other way it would be competitive.
Apple needs to acknowledge they are far behind, use some of the billions for a decent product and develop your own in the background until it’s decent.
Then release it on the SE first as a test like the modem to further refine and at that point cut off the SE from Gemini whatever. Next year when it’s finally decently competitive, release it on the main models.

the world's knowledge suggests Siri is not very good.
Siri suggests that the world’s knowledge is not very good. But it is rather funny.
The first step to world domination is world knowledge 🙃
The first step is to remove any and all ability of the citizenry to defend itself against a tyrannical government. From there, that government has zero checks against its power, and it can become that tyrannical government by doing anything and everything to its people, even to the point of taking property and even family members for the government’s own use.

History confirms it because it has happened that way in 100% if the world’s totalitarian government takeovers.
Does Apple still have any AI employees to work on any AI projects?
That depends on whether AI stands for “Artificial Intelligence” or “Artificially Intelligent”.
I'm voting that they do away with the moniker Siri and change it to something less trouble ridden like Facebook did when they changed to Meta, hoping the world would forget their atrocities.

I'll put forward that we call her Shirley. Shirley will have a raspy, mature ladies voice, as though she's a chain smoker and worked in a Vegas casino all her life. A mature, yet raspy, voice, may signify a lifetime of information gathering through world travels, to go with her profound new wisdom.

The raspiness also adds the cool ability to break into a cover of Kim Carnes' Bette Davis Eyes anytime she stuffs up in order to distract me, and find forgiveness. 😁
Lol @ the Shirley proposal.

But seriously, I’d rather have us be able to rename the assistant on our own devices. I’ve heard Leo Laporte (was a Radio computer tech guy now turned podcaster), when using Android, renames his to “Help me Obi Wan Kenobi!”, which I think is genius!

People becoming too dependent on AI assistants these days. Whether it's Alexa, Siri, Avi, Gemini, etc. the real name is satan.
One could interpret the personal assistant as a false idol, for sure. As a believer myself, I try very hard not to be too personally involved with either Siri or Alexa.
I’ll always stick with Apple products. But I asked Siri to define a word that was a little edgy. Siri said she couldn’t. So, Siri is deciding for us which words are worth defining?
So I’m very curious, and I’m serious about this…what was the word? Can you spell it hangman style or maybe in L33T if it’s NSFW? I’d very much like to try it here on Siri and Alexa.
Actually what will actually define his Apple legacy is taking Apple to a nearly $4 trillion dollar company
Thank you for reminding us of this!
But sadly, not by providing a better product, but by finding more ways to get money out of users. They call it "value creation", sane people call it rent-seeking.
I call BS on your claim that Apple hasn’t provided any better products. If that were even a little bit true, I would not have owned 4 iPads, 5 iPhones, 3 Apple Watches, and an M1 MacBook Pro over the years.

Sure, there are little things to dislike about this or that, and usually Siri is at the top of the list. Or in my case, a set of AirPod Pros that just didn’t fit and were unusable to me. But Apple processed my return and sent me my refund without delay. And really, I can USUALLY get Siri to properly respond to things like requests for directions or to call somebody or send a text in the car, all hands-free (since it’s the law where I live). It’s not perfect, but it’s functional. And I do look forward to improvements, whether they were supposed to arrive in 2025 or not until 2026. Let’s take the time and get it RIGHT.

If you believe Apple is just rent seeking, then maybe you should feel obligated to leave the ecosystem and find something else. The fact is, you have not been forced by Apple to remain an Apple customer. Maybe your family or employment situation keeps you on Apple products. But that’s not Apple’s fault. And you can break it off anytime you want to. If you’re paying anybody’s rent, that’s on you, friend.

I wish you luck.

So let me guess, Apple executives will no longer be sneering at chatbots once they announce one.

Siri is more amazing than ever! It has successfully completed my countdown timer commands multiple times—what a great achievement!

Would be really cool if I could play my iTunes Music Store tracks on my HomePod instead of hearing, "There was a problem with Apple Music."

Can we start there? Will AI help with that? 🙄

Most people here haven't a clue of the teams Apple have built. They can afford to let "experts" go cause no one is going to receive $100 million in stock to stay.

People forget that they lost their cool when Steve received a $90 private jet and stock option he gave back. And yet people are calling Apple cheap for letting AI architects go to META at $100 million.

Apple merged in a reverse take over with us at NeXT for $400 million.

If they charge 20 bucks a month for it just like the others, it would be a huge boost to services, which Timmy would really love.
Only if people actually subscribe. Apple would have to offer a free trial period, and I'm guessing most people won't convert to paid subscribers unless it's really worth the price.

Next year. Next year. next year. when will we be tired and stop buying the same iPhone year after year???

And actually, that is non-sense. This means have learned all of the internet and have it on a phone. And how about new knowledge!. Just won’t be possible. Will use CGPT or Google or buy other company and next year promise to be ready the following year.
Apple has no AI big muscle now. Apple is BlackBerry and doesn’t know it yet.

Hopefully they don’t announce it alongside the iPhone 17 models and then say “Available Early Next Year” and then it gets delayed
Will they make the same mistake? Apple AI was announced in June 2024, more than a year ago and a year a half after ChatGPT 3.5. This is the biggest mistake apple has made in the last 3 decades, it’s going to be more than 3 years after ChatGPT 3.5 and they still won’t be able to release something at that level.
