I found a different solution, at least for my problem. I turned off Traffic in System Services. That made the arrow go away for a few minutes but it came back. Then I saw that there was a purple icon with Apple Store. Looking at the info for that particular app it sounds like if you have the location services on for it you kinda have a permanent geofence on. I turned that one off and so far so good.

Do you have google app? Are your location services on for that?

YOU NAILED IT!! I just turned it off and you were correct. Google was using it even when not using google..that sucks..now I turned it off and google now won't work without it.

That being said..I appreciate all the help here

Open the google search app, scroll all the way to the bottom and tap the "..." button, tap "Settings", "Location" and then toggle "Location Reporting" off.

This should allow google now to work, but location services won't be constantly on. This same thing happened with iOS 7.

Thank you..worked like a charm..now I have google now but without the location arrow on front screen..appreciate it!

Purple arrow --the description says icon will appear next to item when it was "recently" used.

I'm talking about the icon on the home screen next to battery..that is showing up when it used to not show up

That sucks if this is the case

I think apps need to be updated to allow for more than just "Never" and "Always". For example Google Maps has a setting "When using", though that seems to replace the "Always" setting so I have no idea how it's supposed to work since I still wouldn't be able to set Google Maps to only work when running and not when it goes into the background. On a side note, Google Maps doesn't even show up on the "Background Refresh App" page.

GPS arrow

So glad i just found this, I am having the same problem and I have found it to be my betting Apps, betfred and william hill that need my location to work, Is there no solution other than just turn my location services on each time i want to use them?? and off when not in use

I'm having this problem too and I don't even have the Google app. Only solution for me is completely turning off location services

Have you checked all apps and system services to see which one might be using it?

Location arrow?

I had to uninstall and reinstall some of my apps to get the location service to stay off.

Also spotlight suggestions is buggy. If turned on, once it starts using location services, it won't stop until the device is rebooted.

Try motion calibration within system services within location services. That's my culprit.

Strangely enough its not on anymore. I still have the setting turned on but there must've been some app that was running in the background that i turned off without knowing. When I opened my iPhone back to the home menu from sleep, it asked me if I wanted to continue running so and so app in the background or go to settings and turn it off. I don't remember which app it was but I turned it off

Go to Privacy/Location Services and find the apps with a purple arrow and
uncheck them.....Mine was actually the Knock App causing the arrow to appear
next to the battery indicator.

I made an account just to provide some help here. I was having the same problem and it was driving me crazy. I set all location services for the apps to 'Never', all system location services off, and turned off all background app refreshing, then rebooted but the arrow was still there!! Turning off location services entirely was the only thing that got rid of the pesky arrow! Also to note, Siri would turn itself back on after the reboot.

Here's the fix: Go to Settings-General-Reset-Reset location and privacy. Bam. Arrow gone. Now you can go in and turn off all the system location services, and start launching your apps which will ask you again if you want them to use your location or not. I hope this helps everyone!!

Thanks,
Apollo

You don't need to go to all that trouble necessarily. I just went into Privacy and then Location services and the apps with the arrow I just changed to never or when using. I think the main culprit was the Wimbledon app I have installed.

I had to go through that trouble. I had no apps with a purple arrow, or even a purple outline. I turned everything to never and the arrow was still in my status bar. So that's where resetting the location/privacy option in Settings worked.

That's why I included the word necessarily if you didn't see it in my post. Not everyone has to go through what you did to resolve it. It's probably best to do something as simple as what I did first as it's quite likely to resolve the problem.

I'm having a similar issue, but on my iPhone 6 "motion calibration" is constantly on. I have turned it off. Does anyone know what this does and why it may run constantly? I have a feeling it's just an iOS bug.

Location arrow

I finally figured it out this will most likely work for you also, it was the Apple Store application keeping the Arrow on permanently, go to settings/ privacy /location services /scroll down to Apple Store and set to never, it was very annoying for me also, I was thinking it was some significant app that needed this turned on but it turns out it wasn't.
