All too often I've found my phone unlocked (at work I keep it in my shirt breast pocket) and getting warm because it's on camera mode or replying nonsense to a text. The unlock on ten lock screen is way too sensitive, it seems to unlock with barely a quarter scree swipe. There was nothing wrong with ios6 with the slide to unlock button and also on notifications where you had to tap and slide the small icon associated with the app that the notification was from. Please Apple, it won't take much to fix it, it's literally getting on my left nipple!

Again this would be an easy solve for those who wanted to use less of the screen.

Apple could simply make an option:

Settings/lockscreen/ slide to unlock over (slide to unlock words only)

or even tighter control, slide to unlock with arrow only

This way if you change this setting you would obviously know to do this, no confusion and it would be back to the way ios6 was.

I hope you are right, but the original version had so many obvious flaws that I'm not terribly confident. I feel that they tried to reinvent the wheel a bit too much in order to make it as "cool looking" and minimal as possible. But the iOS 6 version still works better and is more intuitive to use, even if it does look old-fashioned now.

I agree that the old version was more intuitive, but I wouldn't say it worked better. On a product such as the iPad, your hand isn't necessarily going to be near the slider as it takes up such a tiny proportion of the screen. However, being able to slide to unlock anywhere on the lock screen, I feel, is more easy to use.

I find now that I never slide to unlock where the old slider was, on my phone or iPad, which, at least for me, shows that the new design kind of works better. I think that with the new arrow, the shiny/rainbow effect that moves across the text, the bounce to show you how to unlock when you tap the screen PLUS the fact that the majority of people have the knowledge of how an iPhone should unlock, should be enough for people to work it out.

Having said that... I did have to teach my mum and dad how to use the camera grabber on the iOS 5+6 lock screen and that worked the same way...

You guys can always use the control center in the lockscreen to control the music if you guys are afraid of accidentally swiping to unlock...

Not really the point though. The slide to unlock shouldn't cover the entire screen.

Fair point. Although I don't think it's an either-or. They could bring back the draggable arrow while at the same time letting you drag almost anywhere. Think of the latter as the equivalent of a keyboard shortcut.
