At the end of the "System Requirements" section in the App Store, it says that there is "19GB of optional additional content available via in-app download"

Will this optional additional content be free?

Regarding getting the 19 GB of content, there is a new menu choice in Logic to "Download Additional Content". Selecting that lets you see what all you can download, and what all is already installed. It's pretty similar to what they did with FinalCutPro X. There are 10 different options, for all the Jam Packs, etc. And near as I can tell it's all included in the $199. It's just not a part of the initial download.

Regarding how professional it is, This is a professional as you can get. There has been no change. I still prefer ProTools, but it's because I learned all the keyboard shortcuts for it and I know my way around. But ProTools would be better if it stole a few select features from Logic!

Considering I just paid $299 to upgrade from ProTools 9 to Protools 10, this new price point is incredible. And they haven't done to the music community what they did to the Video community, thank God! (I still worry that might happen, but this is not that event. This is nothing but goodness.)

Logic Pro has now been reduced to the price that Logic Express was. I wonder if this means the end of Logic Express or if it will be kept around at a reduced price.

How much of the sample content comes with Mainstage?

I'm a Cubase user, but definitely wouldn't mind getting some of Logic's instruments.

I see all that chatter if it is a Pro or not... just because it is easy to use and not expensive, it doesn't stop being a pro app. It just means it's easy to use and affordable

I still run all the pro tools shortcuts in Logic because I learned them long ago as well. David Earl (SFLogic Ninja) has them available for download here:

Beyond all the tired pro vs prosumer vs amateur trolling, would anyone mind addressing my inquiry about upgrade policies related to the app store?

(I know there's fear about Apple's attitude toward professional products, but please give it a rest till there's a new actual event of relevance)

Usually when a "Pro" app from Apple is in the $200 range, it's clearly intended for amateurs. They need to drop the word "Pro" now.

Thats the silliest thing I've heard. There are plenty of Pro apps for very cheap out there. Take a look at ZBrush, its only $700 and is definitely a pro app (with FREE upgrades!). Its not in the $200 range but for what it does it could definitely cost much more.

Topogun is another app that is cheap, only $99 but unless someone works in a 3D animation studio they probably never heard of it.

Price does not equal professionalism by any means. If it did then none of us would have "pro" operating systems. Both Mac, Windows (certain versions) and Linux are all under $200.

Wouldn't it be great if my logic express license would work with logic pro 9 now that it is the same price? I wonder how many people would have to petition to make this happen....

I think that was just a joke. :)

This is reaching new levels of absurdity.

The optional downloads for Logic 9 are- get this- 19GB.

NINETEEN GIGABYTES.

There was a really cool reason why Logic was distributed on 7 DVDs before. This would be that reason.

Does anyone else find this digital distribution to essentially be the epitome of "laziness" on Apple's end? By pushing their stuff out through the Mac App Store, they effectively force the end user to burn their own backups of the software they've paid for (because no sane mind would ever download 19GB of stuff then say "Hey, my disk drive will never crash on me!"). Oh, wait, your new MBA or Mini doesn't have an optical drive. You can either buy one or dump everything to a USB flash drive instead and pray that the flash drive doesn't go bad when you really need the software installation on it.

Nothing replaces the reliability of a good set of disks sitting on a shelf somewhere. Apple's discontinuing of everything they sell boxed software wise is just pure laziness on their half. It's not hip, it's not cool, and it's not futuristic.

existing MainStage install not updating via Software Update?

Software Update is offering me v9.1.6 of Logic, but only offering me v2.2 of MainStage if I buy it (again?).

Not too happy about this.

Anybody else seeing this?

I imagine anyone serious enough to purchase Logic is going to be serious enough to have a backup system in place. The bar is pretty low nowadays with Time Machine and cheap hard drives.

It was not too long ago when i paid 1000€ for logic pro :D Nice price for the best audio software.

Wonder how Ableton etc. will respond. At this price point there is no competition around.

There is none. You get to pay full price like every one else.

Cheap what ? Have you priced hard drives lately ?

You can get 500 GB to 1 TB external drives for under $100, how is that not cheap for a little piece of mind? More than enough for all your Logic files with option downloads and a lot of space left over.

He just meant the Thailand flood doubling HD prices, but that's temporary and even in that case like you said one can buy even two hard drives for the price difference of old Logic and new one.

I have a 13" base MBA, so installing 19GB of additional would kill my hard drive.

Can I install Logic 9 on the laptop's hard drive while keeping the additional content on the external drive?

On topic: This is a great move by Apple! $199 for LP9 is absolutely great!
