If this helps you at all, dcl, I am selling my MX 1000 this week on eBay and buying a Bluetooth Mighty Mouse

And then next week we can hear how much you regretted the decision :)

can someone suggest a bluetooth laser mouse that's actually good?

If you are not going to use it from across the room it's better to stick to a regular Logitech Cordless rather than Bluetooth.

any elaboration? is bluetooth bad for close distance use? one thing i dont like about regular cordless mouse and keyboard is the usb receiver, it really takes up usb port

The only laser bluetooth mice i know of are the MMBT and the MX1000 that comes with the logitech MX5000 Bluetooth keyboard/mouse desktop.

I'd go with the MX1000 BT if you could buy it seperately but unfortunately you can't. Unless you can live with having a keyboard you don't use :(

The regular Logitech Cordless are more responsive than Bluetooth mice.
While not as good as corded, it's still better for games and such than BT.

Bluetooth has more range than regular cordless, so if you're going to use your mouse from the couch, you probably need BT.

I got the regular BT Apple mouse because I like the way it tracks better than the others I've tried, if that helps. It moves like the regular corded Apple mouse.

What is the range of the MX1000? I want to use it with a media center PC (its for my boss), but need sufficient range.

i've heard the problem for cordless/bluetooth not being as responsive... can you give me some sort of idea w/ regard to how significant is the problem?

Correction: the new Logitech 2.4 GHz cordless claim to have 5 times the range of previous mice, so even from your couch you might not need Bluetooth.
I still have one of the older ones which go upto 3 meters (tested), so I cannot verify this claim.

Low-power Bluetooth has 10 meter range.

Well, the new regular Logitech Cordless run at 500 reports per second, so they are as fast as gaming mice. I don't know how much of a delay the wireless translation imposes.

Logitech does not even say what is the report rate for their Bluetooth mice, so it can't be good.

is the logitech S530 using 1 receiver for both the mouse and keyboard, or have separate receiver for them?

Package Contents:
* Logitech® S 530 cordless keyboard for Mac®
* Logitech® MX 600 cordless laser mouse
* USB mini-receiver
* USB desk stand
* 2 AAA (keyboard) and 2 AA (mouse) batteries
* CD with software, comfort guidelines, and help center
* Quick Start Guide
* Five-year limited hardware warranty

This is not 2.4 GHz cordless. I've read it's not even FastRF so slower than the old MX700 that I have.
And all the Logitech Cordless keyboards seem not to be gaming grade.

I might be wrong about this... but 2.4GHz has nothing to do with the speed of transmission, just the frequency that it's on.. wouldn't the speed be the same regardless which frequency?

It has to do with which bands are available and how many channels they support.

FastRF, as in the Logitech MX700 and MX1000, operates in the 27Mhz band. It supports 125 reports/second.

900 Mhz is crowded with stuff like cordless phones.

1.8 GHz is also used for cordless phones

2.4 GHz is the next available ISM band. (there are also phones, WiFi, etc.)

so the desk stand is just for charging mouse purpose only? (who is to charge the keyboard?

Stand is only for the USB Receiver, to allow you to position it where you want away from the Mac and evelate it slightly. Mines going into my USB HUB.

Neither keyboard or mouse have charger.

Interesting. The 2.4 GHz Logitech tech uses Bluetooth RF transmitters/receivers running a proprietary protocol.

Here's some more info:

Old tech

New tech

As the official range for FastRF is 6 feet, I guess 5 times that for 2.4 GHz would be 10 meters, which is consistent with the fact that the new tech is implemented using Bluetooth hardware.
