I just received three keyboards that I’m testing in an effort to expand my work setup. I’m now using a 27” Thunderbolt Display as a monitor whereas before COVID-19 I was merely using my MBP on my lap or in bed. I figured I would share my thoughts.

I am testing the Logitech MX Keys, the Apple Magic Keyboard with Numeric Keypad, and the Microsoft Surface keyboard. Starting with the last, I actually really enjoyed typing on the Microsoft Surface keyboard, and found it to be similar in style to Apple’s older MBP design pre-2016. The keys had a pillowy feel. I probably would keep it if I could get used to using the windows key instead of the command key, and if it were a quieter sounding keyboard; the sound was louder than my misophonic wife could stand.

I have mixed feelings on the Apple Magic Keyboard with Numeric Keypad. I’ve always thought that the keyboard, itself, was too short and that the key travel was too narrow. But after growing accustomed to (but not in love with) the keyboards from Apple’s MBP butterfly keyboards, the keyboard feels quite similar in style. I still feel that the overall design of the keyboard, itself, is too short, and that it could benefit from standing taller. Visually, it looks beautiful to sit lower on a desk, but I think this is purely form over function. I have not decided whether or not I will keep this laptop, but I suspect this too will be a non-starter in my household given the sound it produces (quieter than the Microsoft surface keyboard but louder than the Logitech MX Keys).

That leaves me to the Logitech MX Keys, which I’ll likely be keeping. Immediately after taking it out of the box, I got the impression that it was well built. It’s surprisingly heavy, and not something that will be sliding around on a desk. The key travel is quite nice and to my liking. I’m still getting used to the domed design of the keys, and would be interested to experience the feel of the same keyboard without the domed-style keys. I suspect it does help with comfort and accuracy. The backlight is quite nice, even if it destroys battery life, but having the keyboard charge through USB-C is a big win. I am still getting used to the placement of the keys; the arrow keys, in particular, have been hard to strike without glancing down. Lastly, it is the most quiet of the three keyboards, and a similar pillowy feeling as the Microsoft Surface keyboard, but perhaps with a bit less key travel.

I welcome your own thoughts, feedback, and comments on these three keyboards.

Have you checked out Das Keyboards? I just got mine for an iMac, and I love it. Great feel, and great key clicking noise!

Thanks for the recommendation, but I suspect that my wife would kill me if I used a mechanical keyboard in the office where we both currently work

The MX Keys keyboard is a great keyboard. The build quality is very, very good. The material is solid; I thought it was a heavy aluminum like Apple uses at first. I like that it seamlessly switches between Windows and Mac on my MBP, then it has the capability to switch between 3 different devices. I was leery of the price at first, but I wanted a backlit keyboard, so I decided to see if it would be worth it. I believe it is. I also use the MX 3 Mouse switches between 3 devices as well.

I agree, but I did decide to stick with my laptop keyboard as I’m so used to using my fingerprint for entering passwords. I purchased a Magic Mouse which works well for my basic needs. However, out of those three keyboards, I do feel that the Logitech MX Keys is the best.
