For $30 more than an iPod Touch 5G, you get a nearly 8" big iPad that has the same power as an iPad 2 and access to all of the App store apps.

Some people don't have $500 to spend on a tablet, some do. And some people want 3G connectivity for under $500 which is impossible with ANY other iOS device unless you dedicate yourself to archaic idiotic 2-year cell phone contracts.

(Seriously, with the Nexus 4 going for $300 unlocked, why would ANYONE pay $200 to get locked into a 2 year $100 a month contract?)

My iPad Mini experience was short lived because I couldn't justify keeping two iPad's but while I had it, I used the iPad Mini WAY more than I used my iPad 4.

Can't we make one of these threads a sticky to save people posting the same thing over and over and over again?!

No way, people have already posted about this? The mini has only been out since November!

OP, thanks for shedding some light on this mystery.

I bought an iPad Mini and was immediately taken back by how poor the screen looked. I have an iPad 2 which it should look better than since it is the same resolution on a smaller surface, but because I have an iPhone 5, I expect the smaller screen to look crisper and it didn't. I really like the idea of the lighter device and more portability, but returned it. I also wanted a cellular model which I got, but then found out that AT&T requires you to have the $50 data plan to use the Personal Hotspot whereas Verizon lets you use that with any plan. And Verizon gives you 1GB for $20 while AT&T is 250MB for $15. I would have liked to stay with AT&T for the fact that my iPhone is AT&T, but at this point I will wait for the Retina Mini and get a Verizon model.

today i was so bored that i went to the apple store even though my legs were sore and i had my hands on the ipad mini the first time, first impression was it's so light, and then when i looked at the screen, it was terrible, at home screen i couldn't really tell the difference but when i opened the settings app and saw the text on there, it looked very bad imo (because the text is small, but if that's a retina screen then it would be easier on the eyes)

ipad mini users who have used retina screens devices, what do you think?

I disagree and frankly dont understand your need to share your thoughts. The mini has been out for a while and these like it/hate it threads are plentiful.

I have a mini and an iPad 3. The mini display isn't terrible at all, it's just that the ipad 3 screen is better. I haven't used my 3 since I got the mini.

I can't wait for the mini 2 to come out with its rumoured ~324 ppi retina display... and then all the "the ipad 3/4/5 retina display looks terrible" threads will start the ball rolling all over again.

Have had ipad 1, 2, and then 3. Bought the mini because of the size figuring I could live with the screen. Sold my ipad 3 after a month or so using the mini.

Now a few months later I can't stand the screen. I really dislike using it. It looks terrible. Can't wait for ipad 5 or a mini retina. Hoping for march updates.

I picked up a mini today, after debating over it since November. I plan to try it for a little while and return it if I don't like the screen. I'm 43 and my eyes are not as sharp as they used to be, so not sure it will work for me. I have an old iPad 1 and it is slow, has low res screen, and crashes all the time. It has been time to upgrade for a while.

My question: How long do you guys think it will be until the mini with retina is released?

Thanks!

What will be your main use for it?

Web browsing in portrait mode is pretty rough without excellent vision but you can download an alternate browser to increase font size or just use landscape mode in Safari.

Pretty much everything else is pretty good with the screen.

I think the display is fine. Seriously, it's not that bad. I've used retina devices before and I barely tell the difference

My new iMac is not retina. I can SEE the PiXels!

What a piece of garbage!

WaHHHHHHH!

You can only buy whats available at the time and what suits you.

End of Story.

Battery life.

Nexus 4 is disgustingly low for a smartphone

The Nexus 4 battery life is only HALF the iPhone 5

Main use is browsing, reading Kindle books, email, etc. So far I like it just fine. The screen is not retina, but it is still surprisingly sharp. With the smaller screen, I seem to use landscape more than normal. The mini is very light, which is really nice. I think the case weighs as much as the device does. It is also small enough that I might actually bring it with me when I leave the house. I rarely take my larger iPad anywhere. I was also surprised to find that it uses a 5w charger instead of a 10w, which makes it easier to charge on the move if needed. So far I am inclined to keep it, but will probably upgrade eventually, once the retina version comes out. I appreciate all of the input on these mini threads. They have been helpful.

I tried a few cases for the Mini but it just adds some weight/bulk, still not heavy by any stretch but like you said the case weighs as much as the device. So on that note I just went to a Smart Cover and a rear clear shell. Much better!

Try Perfect Browser and you will be able to use portrait mode for web browsing that much more after you adjust the font size.

Bet you keep the Mini and you may not even concern yourself down the road with a retina model.

The iPad mini isn't something made to apples usual standards, the screen while functional is something of a let down and something I'd expect from Samsung, not apple.

The display is not as good as an iPad 4, but it is not terrible.

It's better than the display on my HP 12" laptop.

Retina screens are just very very good.

My biggest complaint with the mini screen is maximum brightness level - it's not very bright when using it outside.

At least it's auto compatible with all of iPad 2 apps. The main idea is portability. If you want a better screen, get the iPad 3/4.
