why is the standard chord a bit over 36" SHORT

I can't understand why Apple decided to provide such a short power/data chord with the iphone4. When I have my consumer electronics company my standard power/data chord will be approx. 6 to 8 feet long! 3 feet SHORT is ridiculous!

I use the Griffin 3meter USB / iPad cable.

Loose no, but some cases don't like it (it is somewhat larger than a stock Apple connector) it also carries more current.

Wirelessly posted (Opera/9.80 (J2ME/MIDP; Opera Mini/5.0.17405/1114; U; en) Presto/2.4.15)

Just wait for aftermarket 6ft cords. that's all that's different from our chargers. Just the cord.

iPad has been out over a year... As others have suggested, an extension cord works.

I'm confused.. what adapter? Is this a newer model Macbook thing or does it not apply to MBPs?

On your mbp or mb you can pop off the power prongs, and there is a longer cable that comes with all laptops, you can put that on the iPad power brick.

Hmm.. I'm gonna have to check that out. I don't have it in front me at the moment, but it definitely sounds like something I'd have to use.

I just use longer sync cables (6 feet). You can get them on ebay real cheap.

Those are great if the power outlet is easily accessible. If the need is due to a difficult to reach outlet, a extra cord is cheaper than an extra power adapter + longer sync cable.

In some cases you may not want the brick laying on the floor with an extension cable. Kinda messy. I mounted a power strip to the underside of my coffee table where the brick is hidden and just used a longer sync cable.

I just plug it into a regular extension cable. The only place I generally use it for long periods is on the couch, I just keep a cable behind that and plug in either my iPad or iPhone when I am having a lazy day. It's no like I hav to charge them that often, great battery life in my experience.

I honestly believe that 3 feet is perfect for a pack-in cable. The device needs to be charge frequently, so I need to bring a power adapter any time I travel. Because of this I prefer the shorter cable. Anything longer and you end up with a tangled mess in your bag.
Fortunately there are numerous inexpensive solutions for those who find it too short: longer dock connector cable, USB extension, longer cable to your power brick, or power extension cable. Any of which can be had for under 5$ online.
