I was aware that 16 GB modules would be required. I don't expect to see four memory slots in an Apple laptop. My question was if DDR4 made this easier/less expensive than DDR3. I'm more than happy to pay for the additional memory, as long as it's reasonable.

Given the announcement that TB3 will use USB-C connectors, dare we hope for three TB3 ports? Mix and match TB3 with USB 3.1? Four would be even better.

Now what to do with my current TB2 storage modules? I sure hope there's a TB2-TB3 adaptor.

This looks more and more like a late 2015 offering at best.

I know this but as they moved from 2 channel to 4 channel PCIe SSD's, so they had 2 channels spare anyway so they could have easily put in 4 modules they take up very little space when soldered on.
PCIe lanes have absolutely nothing to do with main memory channels.
The DRAM chips actually take up quite a bit of space on the logic board but if they really wanted they could probably fit 32GB. More likely they will just wait for bigger DRAM chips becoming cheaper.

No doubt it was possible with not much space or money taken up but look at it this way.

- All the 15in boards are made the same.
- The amount of people that would buy 32GB, would be less than 10%

They would have to have designed the board for 32GB across all 15in Macbooks when only 10% of those people will buy it. A few pennies over millions of boards adds up.

That is why with 16GB modules, they can continue to design the same board for all the macbooks.

Again I know this I am just saying that just because they can put 32GB of DDR4 RAM in 15 inch skylake rMBP's doesn't mean they will they have always had the ability to do so and have chosen not to.

Yes I know but with DDR4, they can have one universal design with 2 channels as opposed to adding 2 extra channels for less than 10% of the users with DDR3.

No doubt we will never know if they actually will but with what I stated above there is no reason they wont. With DDR3, there was a valid reason for them not to include it.
