I've heard horror stories of people driving off with
their PowerBook left on top of their cars and worse.

I see quite a few very nice choices here but I'm wondering which sleeve actually provides the best scratch and dent protection for your iBook or PowerBook.

The all in one multi-feature bags look great, but
how good do they protect your machine if you're
seriuosly klutz prone?

After reading many of the post I have decided I should invest in a keyboard cover for my Powerbook. What are most keyboard covers made of? One you are content or happy with? Radtec?

I question my motives when I think of skipping to Wal-Mart and purchasing a cheap fabric to cover the Keyboard. Seemingly a lack of common sense? Spending for the Powerbook, case, then a sleeve, now a desire to get cheap?
Thank for allowing me to chat aloud.

I think most would agree that this is the one to get RadTech ScreenSavRz. I got them for my wife's and daughter's iBooks and they work. That is when the "user" actually remembers to use them. It is what it is. Cheers

I plumped for the Zeroshock sleeves as they seemed to offer much better padding and protection and were much cheaper than the Tucano variants. PC World are selling these at good prices - I paid £10 for the 12" for my iBook. They did not have a widescreen version, but I found that the 14" sleeve at £13 stretched nicely to give a snug fit for my PB 15". I liked the look of the School Hymn, but at £35  a pop they could not compete with the Zeroshocks. Both laptops are in pristine nick despite constant travelling.

Buy case now anticipating Powerbook Update?

Hello All,

I, like many of the other readers of this forum, am waiting with baited breath for Apple to upgrade the powerbook.

Anyways, I have a question regarding cases. I was thinking about purchasing a case for the new machine now so I can have it ready to go when I get the new powerbook (i still have some faith that it will come soon).

From what you all know about powerbook upgrades, do you all think that the phyiscal size and form factor of the machine will change with the upgrade that is rumored to coming soon? Is it a safe bet to buy the case now?

I'm thinking about getting the Booq Viper M. Seems like it's going to give the best protection for my new investment. Please feel free to also give impressions of this. I have heard a range of different beliefs on the best case from responses on this forum.

Thank you all for your help...... Hopefully the powerbook upgrade will be coming soon!

I just purchased a Crumpler Moderate Embarassment for my 12" iBook. I will try it out today and let you guys know how it performs. I must say I am already swayed by its good looks and am enjoying the smaller size (although how I am going to fit in all my books is beyond me).

Really loking forward to your opinion. I am looking at possible getting one of these for my 15" PB. Is there extra room for cords, 20 GB Ipod as well as possibly a book?
Also how many pockets are there?

Which color did youu get?

Okay, I am home from my day-long excursion with the Crumpler. I bought an Orange/Orange model of the Moderate Embarassment (it has a light green interior). I think that overall, I enjoy it, although it is not what I expected.

The bag itself is very small. It has a compartment sewn to the back wall on the inside of the bag for your laptop. My 12" iBook fits almost entirely inside it, with a flap coming over the top to cover most of the top edge. All sides (including the flap, which does not completely cover the top edge of the computer) of the compartment are padded about 0.3", I'd guess. There is a slight space underneath the bottom of the padded compartment and the bottom of the bag (Maybe 1.5"). There is a zippered compartment attached to the padded laptop portion, as well as space for two pens and some business/credit cards. On the opposite side of the bag (the front interior) there are three pockets, the middle one of which closes with a square of velcro. There is also a zippered compartment behind that which I put my powersupply in. The bag held my laptop, powersupply, ipod, a few random cords, a 300 page book and some pencils comfortably. I tried to add a 5-subject notebook, but there wasn't room. There is a removable pad for your shoulder, and the bag flap both velcros and clips. I would say the construction seems to be quality.

The bag is not entirely what I expected in that it is smaller and holds less than I would have wished. It is highly preferable to a bag made only to hold a laptop, though, and may help me cut down on the load of books I usually carry to class. When it was entirely full, it was much lighter than my other bag (which is typically fully loaded with books), so this might be a good thing. All in all, after one day of use, I would recommend it with the caveat that you are aware that the bag is small and will not hold much more than your laptop, a book or two, and all the accessories your computer needs (ipod, cords, mice, power supplies, extra batteries, etc).

Thanks for the thorough review. I am looking at the considerable embarrassment for my 15" PB. I am still not sure. I am leaning towards the Crumpler but I am still looking around. Thanks again for you input.

newbee

I want to buy an ibook tomorrow and do not know a lot about it?
my questions:
-has it an internal microphone?
-what about the speed? I'm a law student from europe and I have a packard bell easynote d notebook whith is pretty slim and has a lot of speed, but windows sucks. The bettery's life has 2,5 hours (it was 4h).
-I used openoffice on it, an I had a french and german dictionnary, so that when I was writting on it, openoffice wrote long words automaticly when I tipped the 3 first letters. Does something like that exists for the os x?
-I need the ibook for 6-7h a day? what about the autonomy of the battery? I have no possibility to recharge it.
-what about 12 october? update probable?
-is my packard better (512 ram, 40gig hd, 15"(it's to big for school))
I really want that thing, so I can give the packard bell to my father.
Please help me. I want to become a member of the mac community.

I bought a Tucano Second Skin folder for my 17" pbook

I just want to report that I bought a Tucano Second Skin folder for my new 17" PowerBook. It gives a good protection against scratches. I use it inside my Boblbee backpack, so I just needed a sleeve.

And the Tucano does what I expected. There's a lip that protects against scratches from the zipper. And the price was reasonable. I think it was $23 from the local college bookstore.

Okay, will you guys help me out here? I want a sleeve (black is fine) that is just that. jsut a plain neoprene sleeve that will zip up and fit snug with a 15"pb, and i mean nice and snug. PM me your suggestions and maybe where i can get them. k? Thanks guys!

EDIT: forgot to mention, i do NOT want any extra pockets on the thing, no straps, no logos (if it needs to it can). I just want the plainest sleeve to do the job. So basically, 2 key words. PLAIN and SNUG

While traveling I utilize a Tom Bihn Bag, a Brain Cell, and a Radtech keyboard cover on the Powerbook I have. Good luck on the choice you make.
Michael

Since I am a congenital klutz and do stuff like slam trunk lids closed on laptops, I think a hard case may be a lot cheaper for me in the long run.

Zero Halliburton -- for a 12" PB -- the Z5 (13.8 x 18 x 4 in.) or the Z5 Small (11.3 x 16.5 x 4 in.)? Which fits best? Which works best?

This thread has been amazing. I ordered a Foofbag for my 12" PowerBook and I love it. I spend a lot of time at the library, so I like to be able to put my laptop in the sleeve and then put it in my backpack without worry about scratches. And I put my PowerBook on top of my Foofbag so that if I knock over my Starbucks, it'll just dirty up the bag and not ruin my computer. The bag is bright pink, very cute and stylish. I've been getting lots of compliments on it, and my friend liked it so much that she decided to order a Foofbag for her 14" iBook. Without this thread, I'd probably be stuck with a very boring sleeve.

Skippydumptruck, thanks for the review of the Crumpler!

I have a older Crumpler bag for my old WIN XP 12" laptop and I also have one of their camera bags for my digital camera. What you've said is right on the money: the Crumpler bags, because they're so well padded, are always a bit smaller than one would expect from seeing the exterior or even interior dimensions. After reading your review, when I got ready to order a new Crumpler bag for my coming-soon-from Apple 15" Powerbook, and based on my experiences with my other Crumpler bags, I went ahead and ordered the next largest size, the "Dreadful Embarrassment," which is actually the one meant for a 17" laptop, as that way there should be plenty of breathing space for my new 15" PB as well as for the necessary gear that accompanies it. I am definitely a lover of the color orange, so I was ecstatic to find that the new Crumplers come in Orange/Orange! :)

are any of these bags truely waterproof? I live in Seattle and attend the UW so I need something that can deal with a good ammount of contact with Rain.

Hi Neighbor - I live in Portland and I'm surprised no one's mentioned Trager yet, for the rugged NW snob ;) , which is a Seattle company! The link's below. In Portland we see these bags everywhere - they make bags that are rated by degree of protection for laptops, very rugged (though in the case of the bag I got, not too heavy - which is important for me), practical (pockets for different purposes, and in the best loacations) and yes, rainproof. The bag I just bought is called "Cross Country." It's great cause it's not too big and bulky, can be used as backpack for that occasional need, or just hide the straps away and use the long handle as the currier/carrier type (mail-bag look?). The strap is nice and big and won't move around on your shoulder. It has one of those computer sleeves that comes out or stays in with easy-access, and with nothing around to scratch the laptop. I also like that there's enough room for extra accessories but also a text book and notebook can fit in there, too - but still the bag remains fairly small, compared to others.

Click on the laptop bags ("Laptop Protection") and mine is the Cross Country one, in which the 15" fits in perfectly/snuggly. Online it doesn't say the 15" will fit in it, but the tag on my bag says it fits up to 15".

Hey guys, I'm new to the MacRumors Forums. :)

I have just ordered an iBook 14" and its on its way. I intend to carry it around campus a lot so I'm looking at various sleeves I can protect the iBook with so I can toss it in my backpack.

I've read a good deal of this thread and there are several sleeves everyone seems to like a lot. I have narrowed it down to a few for myself:

1) Booq Vyper.xm
2) Waterfield Sleevecase

Can anyone that has owned these tell about your experience please? Specific likes and dislikes? I like the Vyper for its good looks, heh, but the Waterfield seems so minimalist and easy to use. Not that this hasn't been asked a thousand times already, but what do you guys think?

This thread has been great.

Does anyone have any suggestions for a very water resistant, very secure, extremely durable sleeve? Perhaps not a sleeve, but a thin case at least? When I talk about secure, I mean scratch and tear resistant, and a impact frame would be highly preferable? I mean something really durable and secure, for a 17" powerbook.

Oh, and while I'm at it, does anyone have any recommendations for a pack or combo of cases like SFBags? Theirs are good, but just wondering if there were any others.

Oh, and what is the consensus on the best screen/keyboard protectors?

Cheers for all.

Did your Powerbook/Crumpler bag arrive yet? If so, I would appreciate your opinion. I just received my 15" Powerbook today and I was going to order the Considerable Embarrassment, but your comments have made me think that I should get the Dreadful Embarrassment. I will be carrying my Powerbook, cable, mouse/mouse pad, wallet, sunglasses and keys.

Hi! It arrived on Thursday, but I was preparing to go out of town for a couple of days -- just got home a little while ago -- and so haven't had a chance to be online again until tonight. The Dreadful Embarrassment bag is actually larger than I'd anticipated and now I'm thinking of ordering the Considerable Embarrassment to make a comparison. I'm a petite, small-boned woman and the bag just looks really big hanging off me. The PB fits in the Dreadful Embarrassment with plenty of space and there is room for other stuff as well, with the various pockets that were mentioned. I was surprised that it wasn't better padded, but there is adequate protection for the Powerbook. The bag more resembles a messenger bag than a laptop bag, which is good, as then you're not advertising that there's an expensive PB inside. I've also ordered a sleeve for the PB and that hasn't arrived yet, so I want to see how that works in the Dreadful Embarrassment and the Considerable Embarrassment, too. Once I figure out which one really is best for my needs and my PB, then I'll return the one that isn't as well suited. The color (orange/orange) is yummy and the vivid lime green interior is neat, so I have no problems with that! :)

Thanks for the reply; I actually placed an online order for the Dreadful Embarrassment, but it has not shipped as yet so I think I will go for the Considerable Embarrassment instead. I would prefer that the bag not look to "chunky" when I am carrying it around.

What sleeve did you end up ordering?

Cheers
Kristine
