I haven't had any sort of problems (even with the trackpad) on my 12" iBook G4 that I received before Thanksgiving... not that other people haven't had problems but I don't want the impression sitting around that *all* iBook G4's are messed up. I use the trackpad all the time as I have no mouse (until March) and it'd be a good bet that I've used it every day since I got it (sorta sad but aren't we all?).

Oh, don't get me wrong. I don't think there's anything wrong with mine either. I still think what's specifically happening to mine involves me brushing keys. But my Trackpad, FWIW, works fine. And in comparison to my BT mouth, I find myself using it more than I expected, b/c it's convenient for couch surfing.

And doesn't that get me right back to your sorta sad question?

Just bought the iBook!

Thanks for all the help folks! I know it's been a little while, but I finnally did get the new 12" iBook with 60GB HD, AirPortXT, BlueTooth, and the iLife up to date thingy.

I will post back again to tell about how sweet it is!!!!!

the play by play

The iBook was shipped! YEAH!

(This is gonna sound like a play by play, but i'm so damn excited!)

Order placed 02/02 9:31 PM
Order Shipped: 02/05 12:39pm
From: TAOYUAN CITY, TAIWAN

WooHoo! Now it's only 5-12 days away!

One wierd thing: I ordered the iLife up to date thing about 2 minutes after the iBook, but it hasn't shipped yet.

So....i'm guessing there are a bunch of premade iBooks with the 12"/60GB/AP/BT config waiting to go. I read some posts a while ago about this config taking a while to ship, but I take it Apple has realized it's a popular set up, so it's speedy now.

But that still doesn't explain the non-shipment of the iLife. Shouldn't they have piles of iLife boxes just waited to be shipped out the door?

Does the iLife up-to-date thing actually come in a box, or do they just e-mail it to you?

When I ordered my iBook in December, the order of shipments was very strange. I ordered four things (ibook, mouse, AEBS, and printer), and each of them came in a separate box at a different time, and by different carriers. The printer and mouse (which shipped from the US) beat the AEBS and ibook, which shipped from Taiwan, but not by as much as you'd think -- I think the computer arrived 2 days after them.

I'm not sure if there's some kind of diabolical logistics machinery at work, like at Dell, or if it's just a pretty looking front-end to a paper-driven mess. :D

But then again, on the line it mustn't take more than 5 minutes to take a base iBook and configure it to your requirement, since there aren't many options... The only complex thing is the BT, which sounds like it's soldered into the MB, so I'm guessing Apple has a bank of computers with BT and without, but that's it.

So if they bump BTO products to the front of the list, considering it's made in China, and your order arrives early in their morning, there really isn't a huge reason it shouldn't be able to ship in a day....

I just thought it was funny that the AEBS, which isn't really a BTO product (only make two variants!) was the last thing to ship out....

I'm guessing they email an actual CD. It would be impossible to email the programs out, or even links to a login download page since Garageband is so big.

Allthough i'm guessing the up-to-date version doesn't have the fancy packaging nor a manual (if the other ones do). It might also be restricted to your mac (the one you bought it for). It might not work with other computers??

I'm just speculating here. Has anyone received an up-to-date package? What was inside (packaging + manual wise) and was the installation restricted?

The Apple Has Cometh

It's HERE! Delivered 9:04am PST on Monday, Feb 9th (One day before FedEx estimated!)

At the moment it is sitting on my desk charging (doing that battery thing you're supposed to do to insure long life).

It came with iLife in the box!! DAMN! And I am still waiting for the up-to-date kit. So if anyone wants it, they can have it for $25US plus shipping. It'll be on ebay. (If anyone really wants it, let me know and i'll post the ebay item number)

Some comments on this iBook compared to my sister's G3 600 iBook:

-The plastic used for the top of the inside (around where the keyboard is) is different. Less smooth and more white.

-The Keyboard is definitly better! The keys are the same plastic as around it (see above) not the see-through ice stuff.

-The power button is no longer a bit see-through.

(The first and third change, IMHO makes the unit look a bit cheaper, but it might have better durability down the road??)

-The soft fabric stuff on the inside of the slot loading drive is grey which is a great touch by apple. I was afraid it would be black, but the grey makes it look real nice!

-The button to open the compter's lid is a bit worse than the G3 600's one. You can't just touch it anywhere lightly anymore. You have to press harder and if you dont apply pressure a little left of the middle it wont open at all. Very dissapointing. What you can do however is press down on the lid with one finger and press the button (anywhere on it) with another. That makes it open much easier.

Well that's all for now. Maybe some more comments once I get the baby booted up!

Well, another annoyance. The airport card apparently wont work with my wireless router.

I've been playing with settings all morning and I cant seem to get the airport card to 'see' my network.

I've made a new thread about it here:

https://forums.macrumors.com/showthread.php?s=&threadid=59778

If anyone can help me out I would really appreciate it.

I called Apple, but they can only do a little AirPort config stuff, they say they cant help with 3rd party products.

Called SMC and they said that the router (7004VWBR) is OS X 10.3 compatible and that I should call Apple.

Help please?
