I didn't watch the keynote, have never used a Droid phone and have no interest in the line whatsoever, however....who the HECK calls an OS "Ice Cream Sandwich"!??!?!?! This name sounds like something a child's toy phone would have installed, not a huge, multi-billion dollar company's product! Just another reason *for me* to avoid Android....does not sound professional or serious at all.

Who did google steal Gmail, translate, face unlock, google voice, widgets, animated backgrouds and cloud sync from?

Microsoft and Yahoo had their own email systems first, I believe. Google Voice was originally GrandCentral before the acquisition, widgets were in Mac OS X for some time, and Dropbox has been on cloud sync for several years.

Didn't say they did. But you're silly to think that they haven't taken or "used" anything from any other OS.

The tab-system on the browser in ICS looks suspiciously like what Safari in iOS has had for years, except that the tabs scroll vertically rather than horizontally.

The image thumbnail scrolling looks like cover flow from iTunes.

The drag-one-app-onto-another to make a folder was made popular by iOS.

And face it...the success of any sort of "marketplace" or app store is directly attributable to Apple.

Etcetera.

Goes to show how good the Galaxy S II's specs were that was already released six months ago. It held up very well. Compared from the Galaxy S and iPhone 4, both Samsung and Apple gave their successor a dual core, better GPU, better camera (8MP/1080p), and both retained the same resolution.

But here is the thing -

Samsung gave its GSII a bigger screen and double the RAM (1 GB).

Apple gave its iP4s(iri) a new voice assistant that still is in BETA.

Camera capability is a push. Some say Apple is better and some say Samsung is better. But understand, Samsung released these specs back in MWC in Feb and released the GSII six months earlier. And it shocks me to think Apple no longer has the thinnest smartphone. It now has one of the "fattest" smartphones. And having it to be the thinnest was always something they noted in their keynote.

To me, a bigger screen is what most people wanted all along over anything. That was the most asked feature. Apple gave us a better camera and Siri. Not exactly things we all NEED but they marketed it like we wanted it. Apple simply gave its new iPhone three newer things - Siri, better camera, and the A5 chip. The last two things are logical to get upgraded. Almost every model this year will have a better CPU/GPU and camera compared to last year's models. That is a given. So the only real exclusive thing iPhone 4S got is Siri which will be used for iPhone 4 users via jailbreak.

I think Samsung giving us 720p screen at 4.65 inches with a 316ppi shouldn't be overlooked here. If this was Apple, people would go nuts for it.

People continue to overvalue the larger screen. According to Google, only 5% of Android users are using a larger screen. It's not most people.

seriously what?!? Just like anyone else, I'm allowed to have my own opinion. I had to read it twice when I heard what the new OS was called!

If you re-read my post, I didnt say this was the reason for me to dismiss Android, I said it was just *another* reason to avoid it, in the fact that I personally don't take the company seriously. I consider them a follower and a copycat instead of a breakthrough technological company. I've read plenty of reviews on Android, have seen people that have them and used them and have no interest in any of the supported phones or the OS and find the name completely stupid and childish.

People here can argue back and forth on why Apple vs. Android and I could really care less about it, but it is a public forum and as such I have exercised the right to express my opinion upon being completely awe struck at the first time I have heard the name.

Yes, of course there was webmail before gmail, but the real innovation in Gmail was how email conversations were organized. No other email program or email service did it as Gmail does it before them.

Google bought grandcentral first and then integrated the service into the cloud and mobile App. This still counts as innovation in my book because no one else did it first.

I will concede the point on widgets, but dropbox is a *far* cry from Google's email/instant message/contacts/music/photo sync. Cloud services are more than just online file back-up or mirroring. Heck, they had mirroring back in the days when FTP was the primary means of data transfer over the net.

I like both Apple and Android/Google. No idea why people hate on either phones.. I want the Nexus in one pocket and the iPhone in the other one. I have a Macbook Pro and a Windows 7 gaming machine. I love it all :)

You can have your own opinion, but make sure you think before stating it.

Android was probably the first OS to have Voice recognition. That's not breakthrough? with ICS, they have Face Unlock. Not breakthrough still?

But Android is an OS. They don't make technology, they have features. But let's look at the breakthroughs the manufacturers with Android have done.

SuperAMOLED Displays, Really thin phones. Thinner than the iPhone. Dualcore CPU's. And now, with the Galaxy Nexus coming out, BETTER SCREENS. Better than the iPhone. That's pretty much breakthrough.

Yes, and Mozilla had tabbed browsing before iPhone ever existed, and my G1 (first android ever) browser had browser tabs. Sorry, that feature didn't come from iOS.

The image thumbnail scrolling looks like cover flow from iTunes.
Which app are you talking about? The image gallery or something else?

The drag-one-app-onto-another to make a folder was made popular by iOS.
Sorry, you don't get points for making something 'popular' when it was already invented and in use.

And face it...the success of any sort of "marketplace" or app store is directly attributable to Apple.
Xbox 360 was the first computing platform to bring micro-transactions in an online application market to the masses on that specific platform. Computing had already been moving towards SaaS.... but Blackberry had downloadable apps for mobile phones first. Keep in mind that there was no App store when the iPhone 2G dropped. People begged for one (a la blackberry) and then apple relented.

Etcetera.
Better luck next try?

It better not come in a black box or else they copied Apple. :D

Apple products come in a black box? I thought it was white.....
Every iPhone I've ever purchased (1st gen, 3GS and iPhone 4) all came in ALL black boxes from Apple.
The only white box I've ever received was for a replacement phone (refurb) when my wife's 3GS died.

I don't know what your problem is, but I'm not saying that Google took specifically from iOS. My original point was this:

It's pointless to argue that one company's stealing from the other when it comes to OS features. They ALL steal from one another. Hence, no one can win the argument.

Your last post seems to be in support of my argument...

You seem to be the anti-Apple-fanboy in that you need to retort to anything said that is in favour of apple and may be interpreted as against Android. You need to calm down...I'm just pointing out that Apple has had its hand in advancing the smartphone market and all OS' seem to have similar features.

I'm talking about current Apple products.

Wirelessly posted (Mozilla/5.0 (iPhone; CPU iPhone OS 5_0 like Mac OS X) AppleWebKit/534.46 (KHTML, like Gecko) Version/5.1 Mobile/9A334 Safari/7534.48.3)

Their highly anticipated event just ended, and it was no more exciting than Apples. A mediocre phone (Galaxy Nexus) with specs no better than the GS2 besides the 720p screen, and the rest of the event focused on software. (Android 4.0) looks like some must needed polish for android and some new features...nothing too exciting. But I'm sure no older phones will see ICS until mid 2012, if at all. I guess next year will be the big year for smartphones...

a 720p screen is a nice improvement (better than the retina display which was a big deal when announced)

the hardware continues to be "better" than apple's offerings

if android 4.0 can deliver the polish that it has badly needed, you've got a legit iphone killer. however, i don't see that happening. the only thing holding me back from android phones is... well... android and its clunkiness. there's lots i hate about apple, but for now it's my best option.

it took away the screen resolution advantage, but the iPhone still has the best creen resolution on the market
One which anyone won't be able to tell apart. Anything above 300PPI looks the same to the human eye.

Either way. Samsung and Google are definitely going at the right direction with the screen. A big screen, but yet thin phone with no physical buttons in the front. A 16:9 ratio screen which definitely will take advantage of todays and future media content. Compared against the stone age old 3:2 iPhone that makes every widescreen video clip smaller, the GS screen is far superior than the one of the iPhone.

Many people are underestimating the face unlock function. It works flawless and is very responsive. It is alot more convenient to use it than entering a PIN or gesture lock. You only need to hold your face in straight direction for calibrating but it can even detect who you are from the side of the face.

The Speech to text functions works good aswell. Everything you say are updated as you speak. You'll have to finish a sentence and wait for Siri to finish even if you happen to do misspellings etc.

And it also has NFC.

The iPhone 4s is without doubt a champ but i'm quite sure the 4s announcement was much more boring than the one of Galaxy nexus.

One thing you have to keep in mind also is the screen on the Nexus is a pentile screen. While the resolution is higher on the Nexus (720p), the subpixel density is actually still a lot lower than the iPhone 4 screen.

Pentile screens have also gotten a lot of flack in previous Motorola phones:

Too bad it is only 3.5" ;)

This time next year, Apple will be 6 steps behind and then catchup 3 more. Then the next year they will be 9 steps behinds and catchup to 6 steps behind and so on and so on.

Next up for Samsung is possibly that flexible AMOLED screen we saw a video on a little while back and it wont break. That....would be revolutionary if they can get the resolution out of it.

I could crumble up my phone if I wanted to without the screen breaking! xD

PenTile on a qHD LCD is more noticeable than on a HD SAMOLED display and even the qHD LCD's require a magnifying glass to see the actual matrix.
You're talking about a display with 300+ ppi.
I doubt any user would notice at all.
