I have a 3.5 year old M1 24" iMac in my home/office, am thinking about getting a base model 14" mbp and forgetting iPads.
A 13" 512gb M4 with MGK is $700AUD more than a base 14" 16/512gb mbp, both with edu pricing.
That's crazy.
I’ve got an M1 Ultra studio and a 14 “ M3 Pro MBP. These are my “production” devices. The iPad is by far my #1 used device. It’s my primary “consumption” device. I couldn’t imagine not having it in the mix.

I've had an M4 IPP since launch and frankly don't use the power it is capable of or has. I don't really care though as I am guaranteed it will be usable until some OS comes out the prevents an upgrade in 7 years and it's ruled obsolete

How many people truly need a tablet this powerful? I would expect it to be a limited number compared to the normal iPad, Air or Mini. A tablet doesn't need this kind of horsepower but there's a whole lot of people that buy a Mercedes that don't buy an AMG.

To further your point, an awful lot of the AMGs on the road are just glorified shopping carts, and never get used to even a tenth of their potential!

People are allowed to have nice things because they just want them, they don't need to file a justification for their purchase at the Apple Store!

I have mostly written off tablets, I can't justify the expense when I have a desktop and laptop available. I think the macbook air is a better value but understand not everyone wants a laptop

And that's it in a nutshell. If you truly want an iPad, then you want an iPad. No amount of anyone telling you a MacBook Pro is better is going to make one bit of difference.

Some people just don't seem to get this aspect of the discussion. "Just get a laptop, etc." No, I bought a tablet, knowing its limitations, because I wanted a tablet.

the fact that none of the recent new iOS apps apple has created are iPad compatible (journal, events) tells you all you need to know.

Well I got my lovely new iPad Pro M4 11” and don’t regret it one bit, it’ll go nicely next to my M3 Max 14” MacBook Pro. The screen on it is simply stunning and I have been enjoying it. My Mac stays on my desk most of the time connected to my devices. The iPad is my mobile device round the house etc.

It isn’t a failure in anyway in my eyes.

So, sell your M4 iPad Pro and replace it by the iPad Mini if you think it is a flop?

You really think a FIAT Panda is a better car than a Rolls Royce because of sales numbers?

I have bought recently iPad Mini 7. Now I have two iPads, Air M1 11 inch and Mini 7.
Having said that, when work starts, I just open my trusted M3 Macbook Pro and have the work done in a most efficient way possible. I don't need to torture myself with iPadOS' file system *Files app, nor its lack of proper Finder app, nor its non-existent windows and file management capabilities. I just use Mac.

It has Stage Manager via extended display (upto 4 windows) and a Files app like you said yourself, so how does this equate to being non existent?

because SM doesn't work well or as intended (on Mini 7 doesn't work at all). Files app is a proxy for desktop and doesn't work as well too, it is not desktop, nor a Finder, indeed I am not sure what it is intended for (a place which stores files? a file explorer? a certain place in a user folder to where every other app dumps its files?)

Air and Mini sales may have pleased them thus far, but now that the base iPad has 128GB, it starts to feel like they should have 256GB base and the Pro 512GB. Probably the next releases, as the next Pro would, following its average cycle, be out by the end of this year - with 2026 rumoured for the OLED Mini.

With it the Pro’s base RAM should increase also - this surely puts buyers off, given the Air had had the same for 2 years before the M4 Pro came out.

I highly doubt storage will increase in the iPad pro before it does on the Macbook air, but RAM indeed is due for an increase with M5, let's hope it's 16 and not just 12... Although either is welcome

An iPad starting at $1,000 was never going to be a bestseller. That price put it in a niche market, not the mainstream. Anyone who thought otherwise doesn’t get how Apple works. The same goes for Macs. The MacBook Air has always outsold the Pro because most people want something affordable and practical. Apple knows this, which is why they offer different tiers in every product category. A high-end iPad at that price was always meant for a niche market which includes pros, artists, and hardcore Apple users. It was never supposed to be the top seller, just like the Mac Studio isn’t. Expecting otherwise misses the point of Apple’s lineup.

I love mine - It's still my main device

I'm actually content with more base Apple products otherwise. I have an M1 iMac that's still going very strong, although I do wish I also upgraded to 512 GB storage and not just the ram, and I really enjoy my new iPhone 16e. The battery life especially is very good.

But for my iPad I won't go back to and Air or base model, unless financially forced to off course.
