I can't believe adults are having this conversation. Buying something to use with the intention of returning is dishonest and shady as heck. You all are also the people who whine about price hikes and plan changes that companies have to enlist in order to cover losses from dishonest people like yourselves.
Basically this. Best Buy started doing restocking fees on phones, drones, and cameras b/c customers were doing this type of stuff. I would tell customers straight up...don't get mad at BBY or the carriers for having restocking fees...you get mad at the shady ass customers who caused this crap in the first place by doing ridiculous crap like this. I work retail and sell phones and this crap seriously pisses me off. You're basically messing up inventory on purpose, when that returned iPhone could've easily gone to somebody else that actually wanted it. Also (for the idiots who do this at retail stores) it completely screws up the store's inventory and also screws up the employee's sales numbers and possible commission. That crap ain't cool man. Just wait for the X to come out. It'll be here 6 weeks. We've all waited this long. Surely we can wait 6 more weeks

Hey everyone, I'm sure there are a lot of people in my shoes where we have the iPhone Upgrade Program and we want the iPhone X but do not want to wait until November. How can we make or find a loophole that lets us get the iPhone 8/8 Plus and then swap it out for the iPhone X for the lowest cost?
Wait until you're a grown up?

Hey everyone, everyone in life can't get everything you want. Get over it.

Just wait. And as a person who works in the phone selling business, please just wait. I can't tell you how annoying it is for customers to buy a phone, knowing damn well they're gonna return it...and make the poor sales rep have to deal with a phone return and potentially mess up their sales numbers and possible commission. I know a lot of customers couldn't give a damn less b/c it doesn't affect them in any way but that crap is seriously annoying as all hell. Just wait. The phone will be here in about 6 weeks. The device has been rumored since last year. If we can wait a year thus far, surely we can wait another 6 weeks

Unless they buy it directly from apple then its no issue.

I really hope everyone does this after the upsell apple is doing with the x. It's not morally correct for apple to have the last years model with a 128 gig. Then this year drop it and have 64 then 150$ hike to a 256. All those 128 gig people wanting to upgrade and put in a big choice and most will spend 150$ more for something because apple pushed them to compromise.
So yes. I hope apple loses profits because of this pricing behavior.
If you are ok with it then I have no words.
Good business sense? No. It's taking advantage of people
Gotta pay to play buddy

So let's say iPhone X sells out in seconds and near impossible to get for months, how many iPhone 8's do you plan to exchange? Imagine if a good percentage of those that got there hands on the X on preorder day bought them with the intention of returning and exchanging essentially creating that impossibility for you to purchase? What comes around goes around.

As far as the buying the 8, taking a $150-200 hit, I'm not one to tell people how to spend their money, but you realize that turns a $1k + tax phone to a $1200 phone just for tiding over?

Just making a point that if you hold on to the phone you have now....that extra month for the X Preorder and release will be that much sweeter.

Put it this way, you're just stamping over other people by doing things like that. It makes you no better than scalpers.

Seriously, if you can't just wait six weeks you have a problem and it's going to lead you down a path to unhappiness. Remember what happened to Verruca Salt.

People like you ruin return periods for the rest of us by blatantly taking advantage of them until the retailer has enough and changes them.

For crying out loud it’s a phone just wait for it like everyone else will....

First world problems. Watch some documentaries about people dying around the world, then you dont worry about this iPhone stuff as much.

I'm not seen the relation to your comment when you are on a technology related website and an iPhone forum. That's what people do, they discuss discrepancies and similarities and what they prefer or not on a specific tech topic.

Something which a lot of people on this forum who insist on having the latest device every year on launch day sadly lack.

Haha... yeah I used to be one of those people. I upgraded every year for 5 years straight... until last year. I kept my 6s Plus. Just didn't see the need for the 7.

The only reason I'm upgrading this year is because I'm getting a $300 trade credit for a 2 year old phone that has an ear speaker that is fading... forcing me to bluetooth my calls. Since I don't want to beta test the 1st gen X and am not doing cartwheels over the phone features anyway... I went with the 8 Plus with no intent on returning.

Just curious...how old are you?

There are ways to do what you propose.

But just better to order the phone you want and wait.

There isn’t... you’re going to end up losing money. If you try to buy and return, there’s no guarantee that you’ll get another phone in 14 days... plus why go through that hassle of switching phones 3 times. It’s just silly
Plus, many don’t know but the carriers restrict this and only allow you to use this once in a specific period. AT&T for instance only allows one of these returns - the next upgrade within a certain time (can’t remember since I quit working there last year) will be permanent and you waive the 14 day policy. They do this to keep people from returning used phones which hurts the companies bottom line. And keeps people from scamming.

switch to tmobile & get Jump on demand. Buy the iPhone 8/+ 64gb for $0 down, no taxes down. Upgrade to the X 1 month and a week later.
no taxes down? Is that a new promotion? They've always wanted Tax down haven't they?

Take it like a man, OP. Buy the Plus -> buy the X -> sell the Plus. I wish retailers would implement lifetime bans on people...
