that's right. the same thing happened to my friend last month, and he had to extend the contract.

sounds like ATT took cheap hack as a workaround in their software then. what a joke. i wonder if it is legal..

i would consider calling apple about it and seeing what they have to say. if nothing else voice your extreme displeasure with the practice. maybe they can help. either way im surprised we havent heard more of an uproar about such a garbage tactic.

What really pisses me off is that it is the only phone they do it with.

I considered calling Apple about it. I'm willing to pay the increased plan rates, but I don't think they should hit me up for a 2 year commitment when I'm not getting a subsidized phone.

If I did go 3G and got the 2 year extension, they would gladly give me the $199 / $299 subsidized phone.

Apparently its their software that does the extension, because the sales girl was looking to see if it could be overridden. This was the AT&T store on Wall St.

They all seemed to feel bad about it, and told me they would do something for me in a Blackberry.

They really are taking their monopoly a little too seriously.

I have the Sim and haven't bothered to activate it yet. I literally bought an iPhone on ebay and paid for it, and by some dumb luck, the guy refunded my money and cancelled the auction. This was before I found out about the AT&T policy.

At this point I may wait for Macworld and see if anything comes out of it.

I never really had a problem with AT&T before this happened. I'm still pissed about it, but I may bite the bullet and do the 2 year extension.

Who would have thought I'd miss the phone this much  :)

Don't take a 2 year extension as an answer. You are not entitled to this kind of service. You lost the phone, reported it lost to AT&T and they should be able to help.

In any case, when you get your new iPhone and AT&T still refuses to continue your contract do the following:

1. Activate using Pwnage or QuickPwn
2. Insert your new SIM in the phone.
3. Be sure to make AT&T activate the data plan and corresponding plan to that SIM. (try doing this in another store with some excuse.)
4. PROFIT!!

Viola, no more extending your contract.
