:( Errr... Sorry, guys. I should keep off the computer when I've been drinking AND in a bad mood. Please accept my apologies for being an insensitive **** last night. phillipjfry, hope you find him soon.

It's cool, Mr Smith. Gotta respect someone that comes back to apologize. This board could use more of that. Sorry about your wife's cousin.

Hope you find your puppy....

If (when) you do find him/her, please get a crate for and do some proper crate training. Until they are old enough to be on their own for any length of time a crate is the safest place for them when you cant be around to watch them. Young dogs that are left unattended and free to roam can and will get into anything. If bored they could chew and destroy furniture, or worse yet choke on something they are trying to chew.

I have 19 month old weimaraner who is fully housebroken, but I would never think of leaving her free to roam for long periods of time. Even when she is in her crate she does not get anything accept a small amount of food and some water. Not even a blanket. Last time she had a blanket in there and I left for work she chewed it too shreds and almost died because she ingested large pieces that would not come out.

good luck...

Golf clap.

All of this golf clapping is getting incessant..

@OP: I'm really sorry about your puppy. My dog died (after 16 years, had him since I was 3) about two months back and it's amazing how attached animals get to our hearts.

Yup. Had my dog of 18 years pass away in October '09 and my dog of 12 in March of this year.

They were like, no they were, family.

18 years old?! What kind of dog? That's amazing.

You have no business owning a dog or any other pet for that matter. The fact you think it's OK to leave a puppy outside while you're at work is beyond reason.

Hopefully the dog wasn't hit by a car, or injured by another animal.

Does the phrase "learn by our mistakes" mean anything to you, or were you just born perfect?

I'd be more pissed off at myself if I sunk real money into adopting the dog and updating its shots only to have it gone... I guess you'd get attached to a new puppy. I hope you find your dog.

I'm a cat person, btw.

I gotta say, I kind of agree with ILikeTurtles. When I got my first dog 4 years ago, I spent at LEAST 3 months before he was born doing research and getting advice on dog owner forums on the best practices in being a responsible dog owner (crate training, proper diet, proper training, scheduled shots and vet visits, and general best practices). Just because you know people who have dogs, doesn't make you a responsible dog owner.

I had never owned a dog before since my parents didn't think I could handle the responsibility when I was a kid. I now have two labradors (my original purebred, and a rescue I got a year ago) and I have a very good idea of how dogs need to be cared for. Allowing them full access outdoors unattended is not a good idea, ESPECIALLY for a puppy. They're curious and they'll surprise you with how high they can jump, what they'll put in their mouth, etc.

Now, I'm sure the OP will definitely learn from their mistake, but it takes more than just having a dog to be a responsible owner. In the end, hopefully the pup returns home and has a comfy crate waiting for him.

Google is back, alive and well!

*apology*

It's no problem. I wasn't going to feed into where ever it was you were going with your example. No harm or foul

Hope you find your puppy....
....good luck...

I've been around dogs my whole life. Not that this at all makes me an expert, but the concept of dog-rearing is none too foreign. The dog doesn't chew on anything except the toys/treats we give him. He doesn't rifle through the trash or laundry/shoes. And I promise I don't leave him alone for long periods of time. I think any given day, no one leaves him alone for more than 2 hours. One day he was left alone for 3 hours.
BTW the weimaraner is cute looking!

Have you checked outside of Pannucci's Pizza?
Most. Depressing. Episode. Ever. I went to pieces when I saw that episode because of a dog I raised for 16 years (small black lab) was put down not long before I saw that episode

I think it's a little forward to state that I have no business owning a dog. I've lived with dogs for 22 years of my 26 years of life. I took this dog in when the neighbor who originally had him left him outside ALL the time with NO food or shelter. The dog learned to jump a section of the fence that had plywood (aka a ramp) to jump from.

When I found the dog weaving down the side of a very busy road, he was all ribs and spine. The dog is housebroken. He doesn't mess in the house or nose through the trash or chew on blankets/shoes/clothes/carpet/furniture/etc. So I trust him to be by himself for at least a little bit of time.
When we left that afternoon, we left the backdoor open for him to go in and out like he already knows how to do. So I didn't abandon him or anything I feel would warrant a label like "no business owning a dog". I believe that title is owed to the neighbor above who couldn't muster a "meh" when he returned my calls 4 days after I found him and offered to return the dog.
The granular semantics of dog owning can be argued all day. :)

I will side with you on owning a dog != knowing how to own a dog but growing up with them, you do learn some pretty obvious lessons about raising them. But just as with any dependent being, it's very hard to predict every possible avenue that would result in injury or getting lost.

Something that I won't side with is that losing a pet, or having your pet run off makes someone a bad pet owner. Millions of people have their pet run off, everyday. Have I learned from my mistake? Yep, I removed the escape route he took (some logs stacked up by the side of the house).

As for crating all day, I will look into crating (a family member offered to give us the equipment for it. He's just not at the house during the work day long enough to worry about messes but he is in the garage for no more than a couple hours in the morning until he's taken over to a family member's house to play with their dogs.

Sorry for the wall-o-text. I just had to update everyone that Google is in fact home as of last night. A neighborhood kid found him hanging out at the park about a couple blocks down the road. :D Thank you for the support or at least allowing me to vent my frustration for not being able to find something that's lost. :)

I'm going to go watch Jurassic Bark now. :p

I wouldn't say you shouldn't have a dog but I will say you shouldn't leave your back door open unless you live out in the woods and don't care if your house gets burglarized.
