Can i use icloud purely as a backup dumping ground rather than a syncing tool? The last thing i want is to use icloud as a regular sync to my ipad.

I'm actually confused - wouldn't it make more sense to using iCloud to sync (Pages documents) instead of backup (entire device)?

In my opinion, yup. Learned the hard way as well. Once I started using ICloud (now onedrive) to back up my critical files (documents, pics, etc), I never looked back.

sorry if this is the wrong forum, but....

installed ios11 on my ipad pro 1st gen 12 inch yesterday. (did and itunes backup first).

all seems to have been a smooth process, other than a fair few Pages files dont open. the file name is there, but there's nothing in them and they wont open.

any idea how to retrieve these individual files without a restore?
You'd really benefit to embrace iCloud's seamless backup and cloud inteergration of files.

i've had a bad experience with icloud before - as soon as i activated it on my ipad i had duplicates of ALL files, contacts, photos etc etc appearing on my device. loonacy. i dont want to risk it again, it was a nightmare to restore and fix

so, all i want is an active back up place.

can i, for instance, have my ipad automatically save my pages/numbers files everytime i amend them, not only to my ipad as per, but also automatically to drop box say?
