Just installed this drive on my 2007 MBP. Amazing the difference it made in speed both in startup and application launching.

I am having a problem getting SD24 installed as my superdrive is recognizing all burned cd's as blank...

I only just read about the firmware update a couple of hours ago. Two runs of SuperDuper and a reboot using the CD iso later and I've got an updated hard disk with no issues. I will report back on general performance.

Well I can't run the update. Tried running it from bootcamp, no joy. I burned a CD, but the internal optical drive is dead and it won't boot from an external cdrom. Just great.

I installed my XT and did the 24 update a week ago.

She was very quite at first, but now I notice a slight vibration when I touch it or have it on my lap. I can hear it as well.

Seems like the battery life is taking a hit over the last few days as well. 45 mins of wi-fi surfing and I am down to 80%. Does this appear normal?

TIA!

Firmware Update walkthrough?

Could someone either point me to an online guide to updating the XT -or- explain the process here (if you've done it yourself)? I would like to run the update, but am a little fuzzy on what I need to do besides backing up my HD.

Thanks in advance. :apple:

Well burning the cd is pretty straightforward and then you boot up loading the cd. It doesnt erase anything off the drive either.

Any advice on updating XT installed w/ Optibay?

I've been trying to update my XT (500GB) from SD23 to SD24 installed internally via an Optibay, but not having much luck. I've burned the ISO to CD using an external USB CD drive, and booting from that, but to no avail. The CD is recognized on the boot screen, but flashes the slashed circle symbol (/) when selected. Also tried restoring the ISO to a USB Flash stick, which doesn't work either (I assume USB simply won't work, and need Firewire?)

Does anybody have any tips for updating with setup that I have? I'm on an i7 Macbook Pro, 10.6.6, with a Momentus XT in an Optibay.

Put the XT in normal position and cd drive back in and do it.

Why should I care about this SD24 firmware? I have 2 of these in my Windows laptop running SD22, and SD23 respectively. The machine works perfectly, no pauses or hangs. Boots very quickly for Windows 7.

Does this update have something to do with improving Mac performance? One of the drives was in my MBP before I upgraded to the 750GB 7200rpm Seagate. It worked fine.

Color me perplexed.

Cheers,

Cheers,

It makes it quieter and use less power.

Once it reboots you must hold down Option again and then boot back into your Bootcamp partition. It will then kick into the firmware update.

Is that what happened for you? I tried that several times, it just boots straight back to Windows.

Would you guys recommend this drive for a 13 inch New MacBook Pro over the 80GB Intel G2 SSD ?

That depends on what your plans are. The SSD will be faster overall, but lacks the storage space. If you typically dock your laptop to external drives and are not dependent on carrying around your entire music and photo library with you then I would say go for the SSD. For me I don't really have the option to shed that much space in the name of performance so the XT was a good compromise for me.

Mind testing the affect on battery life? I've read its noisier and drains more battery life which is why I haven't gotten one yet.

I found that not to be the case, mine is quiet and my battery life is the same as with my older Hitachi 320Gb 7200 RPM drive, so for me it has been a really good upgrade, I just need them to make a 1 TB drive now

Well its an interesting question. I actually already own a 80GB intel SSD G2 that is not in any box right now. I have a 5TB NAS at home where I store my iTunes library and iPhoto (this is where its really gets tricky) iPhoto hates to be on network drive. iMovie as well. I used to use a 64GB OCZ in my 2009 that I sold and it was enough space, but opening iPhoto library was extremely slow, so was iMovie of course. This is the reason for thinking about this drive.

I do love the SSD performance, but storage, so looking at this drive for about $90 with more storage that I need seems good if the speed is on the same level as an SSD (or close enough to it)

It is one of the closest drives to SSD performance, but still cannot match them. If you google around, there are some direct comparisons with actual figures... I suspect Anandtech is a good start.

I just placed an order for my XT. Going to put it in my 2010 13in MBP. I have a WD external drive that I do my time machine backups to. Can I restore all my data to the new drive from my WD?

Also, I wouldnt mind getting a cheap usb enclosure for my stock 250gig HD, any suggestions?

The XT will not be nearly as fast as an SSD. But it sounds like the trade off you are already coping with by storing your files on a server may already make up for that speed difference. Tough to say, especially since it sounds like you've been running SSDs for awhile now and are used to their performance.

In short - yes. If you install the XT and do a fresh install of OSX (recommended) you should then be able to use the migration asssitant to restore from your time machine disk.

I like the enclosures that OWC sells. They basically have two offerings, both bus-powered: a cheaper plastic housing with only a USB connection, or a more expensive clear acrylic housing which includes heat sinks and offers more options for connectivity (USB, FW400 & FW800). I suggest getting one with FW800 if you plan on using the drive for frequently moving bulky files and/or mass media folders. Its the most expensive option, but worth it IMO.

They also offer the Elite series which are crafted from aluminum, but are even more pricey.
