Installed a Momentus XT 500GB on my MacBook Pro (late 2007)

After I found out Newegg was selling these for $10 off from original price, I gave into temptation and finally bought a 500GB Seagate Momentus XT 7200 rpm for myself. For this post, I will make comparisons with the Momentus XT to my previous (and always dependable drive) WD Blue Scorpio 500GB 5400 rpm.

FYI, if you can't see it in my signature, the model MacBook Pro I own is a late 2007 model, build 3,1. It has 4GB of Crucial brand ram, and is 2.2 Ghz. Yeah I'm old school like that :D

The Seagate Momentus XT I own has firmware version of SD23.

I installed it around 9PM last night, using a restore from a Time Machine backup earlier that night. Took about 4 hours to fully restore my Time Machine backup with no problems at all. I been using it a lot since then from restarting my computer numerous times so my drive can boot up quicker to opening/testing random applications like Photoshop CS5.

First impression:

At first, I noticed no real difference in performance. But of course, after a couple restarts on my HD (like 4 times), I can agree that this thing makes the system responsive. My average boot up time on my old WD Blue Scorpio 500GB 5400 RPM drive was 1:30 minutes. Now with the Momentus XT, average boot up time is 27 seconds! Impressive thusfar.

Application boot up times are responsive as well. Average time for Photoshop to start on my computer was roughly 35 seconds. Now it's roughly 10 seconds! Not bad at all.

Performance wise other than boot up times, it's highly impressive. I never owned a 7200 RPM drive mind you, so I can't vouch for how "normal" vibration is on a laptop. When I first installed it and booted it up, it didn't vibrate crazy but has a very dull vibration that can be felt when I used the trackpad. But after a reboot, that vibration went away.

It runs very very VERY silently too. Of course if I was in a mute room, I'd hear the drive spinning but that's the same for my WD Blue Scorpio drive. In fact, so far I notice this thing is much quieter than my previous hard drive.

With this hard drive installation, I also bought a new battery with 0 cycles on it. Typical battery performance, when fully charge and unplugged, would last me at least 3 hours 30 minutes or less. With this install of the XT and a brand new untouched battery, when fully charged and then unplugged, my computer indicates it will last for 3 hours. This could be because of the firmware version I have on my computer that addresses sleep issues that battery life doesn't seem as "long" as I used to see it. Then again the battery life would report as 3 hours 15 minutes at one point, then when I open up something like Firefox, reports as 1 hours 24 minutes so it's very very very confusing to know how much time you really have. I'm not too happy with this issue, but it could be because my battery is brand new and it's not yet "calibrated."

What most people seem to be worried about are those "spinning up/down" issues. From my first time use, I don't notice any weird spinning up/down noises. When I close my computer to sleep, it does take like 5-10 seconds for the drive to fully sleep, and when I open it from sleep, it works just fine. But nothing out of the ordinary. I will especially be monitoring this on my computer because I hear it's the biggest criticism with the XT on most computers.

Because most of you ask for benchmarks, I ran a test for both drives I own. Benchmarks are as follows:

Benchmarks can't say much for the XT so far I know because I used it in less than a day's use. Plus I hear benchmarks for the XT won't be as good, but it performs very speedy from my first impression. I will definitely update people over the months on my drive and if it's still running optimal.

Hope this helps anyone who thought of buying one of these, especially if you're a owner of a older model MacBook Pro like myself

Love the Momentus XT 500GB—but SuperDuper won't work!

Does anyone have any ideas of this? I sent the full error report to the SuperDuper developer, but I'm worried. Backing up to a brand-new Lacie 500GB drive 800 firewire that looks fine. It crashes out of SuperDuper the instant I hit the final "backup" button.

Need help!

Thanks!

This is getting worse and worse.

The SuperDuper developer suggested I run a command in Console.

I opened Console and saw this:

dyld: shared cached file was build against a different libSystem.dylib, ignoring cache
Last login: Sun Sep 19 11:04:12 on console
dyld: shared cached file was build against a different libSystem.dylib, ignoring cache
dyld: shared cached file was build against a different libSystem.dylib, ignoring cache

That seemed weird to begin with.

So then I ran his command:

sudo update_dyld_shared_cache -force

I didn't realize at the time that the command referenced the same "dyld" in the weirdness I saw when I launched console.

Anyway, the result of running the command was this:

dyld: shared cached file was build against a different libSystem.dylib, ignoring cache

And now my fans don't work! They're constantly cranked at 6000 or 4500 rpm when there's no CPU running at all (95% idle, and I have 4GB of RAM).

Ack!

Does anyone understand what running the command "sudo update_dyld_shared_cache -force" has done to my poor MBP and its brand new Seagate Momentux XT???? I'm dying here.

Thanks!

SuperDuper problem fixed! Still unhappy about fan speeds, tho. I mean, 6000rpm at only 150°F? Before installing this drive, I remember seeing barely 3000rpm when temp was 200+°F.

Fan problems resolved. Drive gets faster every day. Am SO glad I bought one. It's not that noisy AT ALL. No vibration, really fast boot up.

Very happy camper now.

Thanks, everyone, for reporting so extensively on this drive and encouraging others to buy it!

Is there any update for the XT? My macbook 13 has started to beachball alot lately, and it`s pretty annoying. Or is there another reason this is happening?
The mac is only 2 weeks old.

Dunno.

My notes say this:

Firmware SD22 had issues spinning down too much.
Firmware SD23 keeps the drive spinning, no matter what.

I have no idea what my firmware is. So far I am not noticing problems. I did at first, a little bit, when loading new applications. Maybe that's because I'm on SD22 and it keeps spinning down. Don't know.

go to system profiler and check your serial-ata section..find your hard drive and check your 'revision'..it will say either SD22 or SD23..

I'm taking delivery of a Momentus XT today so am interested to hear what you did to fix your SuperDuper issues as it's my primary backup method.

This ONLY works for Snow Leopard.

Here are the instructions from the developer:

Please open the Terminal application. Copy the following to the clipboard:

sudo update_dyld_shared_cache -force

Paste that into Terminal. Press Return at the end and, when prompted, enter your password (it'll be invisible) and press Return. When it's completed and the "%" prompt returns, quit Terminal and restart your Mac.

Then, give SD! another try.

Time for an update. I decided to go with a clean SL install so have installed it, updated using the combo update, installed iTunes 10 and am now copying across all my data from my backups. I've also run the command recommended for SD!

Once I've got my data across I'll install my apps and set about training the disk cache.

Had this for over a week and I like it. Faster, adequate space, no noise, or vibrations. It's worth the extra money. Running Bootcamp partition of 120GB with Windows 7.

A day on and I'm very, very impressed with the performance boost from the hard drive. Apps start really quickly, especially the big ones like Aperture and Photoshop.

Over a month update...

Hello again everyone, reporting in on my experience with the Momentus XT 500gb HD.

Once again, to clarify, I installed it on a MBP late 2007 model with 4gb of RAM. I use my MBP primarily for graphic design and editing work.

From the past month or so, this thing has been great! The only real problem I ran across within the past three weeks was that my boot up time went from 27 seconds to about 1:30 minute! Plus I began experiencing beachballs/spinning wheels of deaths on some simple tasks like opening System Preferences.

After searching online, I learned that if you installed the Momentus XT through a backup of your previous drive, or cloned it, what you need to do is go to System Preferences, then Start Up Disk, and select your HD. I didn't think that would be necessary to do, but I just did it today, and my boot up is back at 27 seconds again!

I was seriously cursing Seagate up the top of my lungs everytime the HD took 40 seconds to show me a white screen, then another 30 to show the Apple logo spinning, then 10 seconds for my login screen to appear. That is what happened before I did the Start Up Disk selection. So if your bootup time is super slow, leaving you on a blank white screen for like 20-40 seconds like it did to me, this is what you gotta do.

As far as battery life, I notice that it's regulated back to it's rough 2-3 hours lifespan. So battery life has not taken the hugest hit, but average battery life on the MBP now is around 2 hours when with a old HD, it used to be like 2 1/2 - 3 hours. Not the hugest hit on life in my book.

For the record, when running the latest SMART Utility on my HD, it's passed tests. So far, so good, I'm content with this HD and don't regret the buy.

I'm hoping the beachballs will lessen as well now that I did this. I'll report back in another month or so. Until next time kiddies.

Quite happy with my XT which I've had for a couple of days, definitely speed-wise - it's lightening fast (on a 1st gen MBP). It's quite noisy though (just the general clicking chatter of activity) - and wondering if I've seated it wrong, or if I've got a slight dud.

People generally saying it's quiet here, confusingly... certainly my 5200 WD before was much quieter (I could never hear it).

Any thoughts?

Cheers

I've never had any clicking or chatter on mine, only a hum as it spins and the associated vibration (again only smooth).
So your clicking noise is not something I'm familiar with on this drive.

Thanks for letting me know - I'll check it out and see if it's seated badly. Else see if I can get it replaced under warranty

Just upgraded my Mac Mini myself. It wasn’t as bad as expected at all. :)

Working fine, saw a significant performance improvement over the stock HDD (320 GB).

Are there any Mac Mini Momentus users here? What about your temperatures? Mine went up which is to be expected by about 10° to 51°.

All I can say is WOW. Brand new MBP13. Replaced stock drive with XT500 prior to first boot. Used OSX disks to format drive, then installed Snow Leopard (also dropped 8g ram in at the same time).

No problems whatsoever! The drive did everything correctly... system installed perfectly (aps too)... no vibration or other anomolies reported here...

Last but not least, on a new, clean system as described my boot time is 16 seconds to the dock (I guess that's how it's measured). Smokes my old Dell.

Granted I've only been usinig it for a few days, so I don't have the extended use report yet... but i love it. I got mine at OWC, along with the ram (they offer a $50 rebate on old 4g ram, so the total price was better than Newegg in the end).
What ram did u put in?

Thought id give my report...

So I put a XT in my computer about a week ago so I thought I would post my findings.

Anyone that says this drive doesnt vibrate is crazy. I can feel the vibration anywhere on the palmrest on either side. Its just enough that I notice it, but not enough that it really bothers me.

Heat, havent really noticed much more than normal. A few degrees, nothing major.

The deal breaker for me is going to be the battery life. One of the more attractive features of the 2010 13" for me was the battery life, and this drive had cut a good two hours off my battery life at least, possibly more.

Really, to be perfectly honest I haven't noticed enough of a performance increase to warrant leaving this drive in. Sure the machine cold boots quicker, but I only do that a few times a month so whats the point? Apps MAY load a second or two quicker. To me this seemed like a lot of hype and not a lot of results.

^ Just done the same with completely different results!

Agree with the negligible temp- but really don't get any noticeable vibration and the battery looks to have taken just an hour off if that.

I'm curious about how much your cold boot time has dropped? I'm getting between 45-60 seconds which isn't quite as big an improvement as expected (absolutely no issue though).

What's most impressive is the speed in launching apps and writing large files to disk compared to the stock 5400 drive- maybe the flash component is at different optimisation stages?

Hi all,

the slowest running application on my MacBook is Aperture. Are there any Aperture users out there who use this new hard disk? Does it speed up regular Aperture usage, most specifically switching between RAW images?

I suppose switching between photos would only benefit from a speed upgrade if you often work with the same photo album, or?

Many thanks in advance for any experience reports related to this.

All the best,
Michael
