Thanks for the reply - I used Super Duper. So, did you wind up doing a clean install after finding that the boot times weren't changed much? While it is a pain, would you mind timing how long it take for your MBP to cold boot to appearance of the desktop? While not scientific, it will give me an idea of whether my MBP is actually affected by the problem.

I just timed my core i5 MBP (4GB ram) and it took 65 seconds from the press of the power button to appearance of the desktop. That seems substantially longer than what others are getting with the Momentus XT installed. I also have hdapm installed to address the spin down issue. Interested in hearing your experience. Thanks again!

EDIT: I decided to repair disk permissions from the Snow Leopard install DVD's disk utility -then timed it again. This time I timed it from when I first heard the chime to when the desktop appeared and it was 24.8 seconds. Interested to hear how this compares to other Momentus XT users who clean installed on the drive. Thanks!

~25 seconds seem to be pretty normal with XT. Mine take 18-25 on average from the chime so pretty much the same. Also it should be depending on what background applications to be loaded on your log-in. I load color calibration tool, dropbox and etc on my boot. If I kill them then the boot gets faster.

I made clean install and used Time Machine but I did repair disk after the install because I knew the loading time improved with my stock 5400rmp HD as well right after I purchased my i7 Macbook Pro. I haven't had spin down issue at all. It never spin down? I don't know. Battery life seems to be still decent and the temperature shows 32-35 degree on idle.

.
Hi, just timed this and it came in at 24s (2010MBP, 2.4GHz, 8GB RAM) so pretty much the ballpark (and I did the fresh install). Before I was getting an average of 90s so thought I'd get the time back after a while. Sounds like yours is okay after repairing permissions:cool:

just had to contribute my 2cents to this, got my i7 2.817" MBP last week and have installed a XT and moved the stock drive to the opti bay and I have to say that the new XT is amazing! super fast and having the extra hard 500gb hard drive space is awesome for music and videos/downloads.

I did the terminal command as I was getting beachballs everynow n then but not noticed too much difference yet (i did it last night so will spend time today testing)

Mine...

Mine Crashed a couple days ago. . . Would not boot or do anything. . .

Sucks. Had most things backed up. Only two weeks old. . .

I have now installed an OCZ Vertex 2 120gb ssd in place and replaced the optical bay with a 320gb 7200rpm drive.

Loving it!!
:)

Has anyone with the newest sd23 revision of this drive tried using it without hdapm installed? If so, any problems? I installed hdapm as soon as I installed the momentus xt but wonder if it is even necessary with this revision. Thanks!

I don't have it installed. There is absolutely no need on sd23, as the drive doesn't spin down at all.

Thanks! I'll uninstall it and see how that goes.

Well, I uninstalled it and the performance still seems fine. However, since doing so I am occasionally hearing a chirp sound coming from the front left of the chassis and I think it is the drive parking itself (or doing something). The MBP is just sitting on my desk while this is happening and I am usually typing something (for instance, in a Word document or on a web form). Has anyone else experienced this? I am going to monitor it for a bit and then reinstall hdapm to see if it goes away.

Am I the only one who almost never shuts down a laptop, keeps apps open all the time, and already gets instant wake from sleep with my MBP 15" Early 2008?

I would guess so. Don't you ever take it anywhere?

I rarely (if ever) shut my MBP down. I close the lid, it goes to sleep. And yes, I take it everywhere this way.

Instant wake, no problems, apps still open, etc.

Me too - every time I do this, I remind myself of how I could never do that comfortably on a windows machine. I had two windows laptops overheat in backpacks because they didn't reliably sleep when the lid was closed.

I just installed an XT in my mid '09 MacBook Pro. It seems to pull on the battery a little more than my old drive but I have no objective data to support my observation. It certainly feels faster when launching applications. Looking forward to seeing how it performs over the next weeks and months.

I may consider 1 or 2 for my Mac Pro. Anyone have experience running these in a raid 0 or raid 1 configuration in a desktop?

Sam

Has anyone used a Momentus XT in a Early 2009 (5,2) MBP?
I'm wary, as I got caught up in hassle with HDs and the click beep/ferezing/beachballing issues that happened before and after the v2.0 HD firmware update from Apple.
My early 2009 MBP is running ok with stock drive - just wondering if anyone's had issues with this -
- spindown issue, stuttering etc
i've seen that there is a thread about Momentus XT drives having issues in some Macs, and don't want to get into that saga again!

I have a "Late 2008/Early 2009" model (5,1) and the XT is doing pretty well in mine. I get the occasional beachball but its only for a second or two and doesn't happen too often. I started to look into the firmware update and then got caught up in work/life business and never followed up on the pros/cons of it.

But aside from that I am happy with the drive and my startup time is MUCH faster than stock.

Just installed one (500GB) in my Early 2009 17" UB MBP. No problems at all - it's the quietest drive I've used (it replaced a WD Scorpio Black 320GB, which I wouldn't consider especially noisy). Performance wise, it seems to easily outperform the WD. The whole system seems more responsive. I even can see an improvement in file copy to/from external FW800 drives (67MB/s vs 70). It's also nice to get rid of the WD head load cycle click.

Be patient, after a week or two you should see the battery life return to close to what it was with the OEM drive.

Just to report back - From the Seagate PreSales Team:

The Momentus XT drive shouldn't have any issues with the MacBook Pro. Some drives did experience spinning down when not being accessed, but this issue was addressed with the SD23 firmware, so if the drive has SD23 or better then there shouldn't be any problems.

The best option is to do a fresh install of the OS onto the drive, this way the majority of the OS files will be contained in the SSD portion of the drive. If you want to do a clone of the old drive to the new drive you will want to reboot the system between 10 & 25 times to have the drive reallocate the most used files to the SSD portion of the drive.

+1 on booting taking about 25-30 seconds. I've actually been surprised that it's worked as well as it has. Although when I have to boot into Windows on Bootcamp for Visual Studio, I'm always a little concerned that it's going to put some of those Windows files into the NAND memory, but even after working in it for a while or after several (re)boots into Windows, it still seems to boot back into OS X fairly quickly.

My wife bought me a 13" MBP for Christmas this year (still wrapped and under the tree), but I knew the 250GB 5,400RPM stock drive wasn't going to cut it. I ordered a Seagate Momentus XT from OWC and it's installation will be the first thing on my "to do" list Christmas morning.

You'll love it, give it about a week to fully settle in, they need a little time to learn once it has done this it settles down. Mine boots in about 25 seconds, has minimal vibration (I have to concentrate to feel it), and runs at about 115-12 F doing most tasks. Video heats it it to about 165F.
