What will you do if Apple replaces the problematic butterfly keyboard with a haptic touch screen keyboard (I think that's the way they are heading) ?

Depends on what the haptic touchscreen keyboard will be. Will it be comfortable to type on? Will it drain the battery? Will it have similar Bridge OS issues?

My priorities are:
1) Reliability
2) Usability
3) Ease of repairs/getting replacement units
4) Design

The current touchbar/keyboard combo fails 1), mostly fails 2), totally fails 3) and does good on 4).

In fact, they could give you the option of full Touch Bar or standard keys plus Touch ID as seen on the new Air... I'll bet folks like you would even pay the same price for it, so it's a win-win, right?

I don't think it should cost the same (realistically it should be $100-$200 cheaper), but I would definitely consider getting one far more than the current ones

How does the Touch Bar portion of the keyboard fail on reliability ?

My friend got the 13-inch MacBook Pro with Touch Bar and I just didn't really see the point. Even he said he doesn't really use it and kind of regrets paying more for it. He's pretty computer savvy and still doesn't really seem to need it.

I've heard the same, that it's not really useful, but going through the comments here I see that people really do find good uses for it. Maybe I just don't do the same tasks they do, which is why it doesn't seem important to me. I haven't had a Mac with it, so maybe I'm just not giving it a fair chance.

I guess it's a feature to rethink in future Mac purchases, assuming they keep it around.

A lot of people have the state of mind ... "How does this feature incorporate into my routine".
Then there's others that have the state of mind ... "How to I incorporate my routine into this feature".

I personal fit into the latter.

A few months ago, I thought it was the biggest waste of time going, but after installing BetterTouchTool it's just absolutely amazing, everything I need and more.

I really couldn't see myself without one now. With my top bar normally hidden, it's nice to have the date there, volume and brightness controls and a cheeky look at my battery. Oh not to forget my current Spotify tunes.

They give a 45 day trial, so just give it a shot, if it's not for you remove and come back here and wine. I'm sure Apple will give users a predetermined set of 'widgets' in a few OSX updates or so.

Seriously, well worth it.

Edit - Dang, I didn't realise so many people actually use BetterTouchTool, just saw the thread now. It should seriously be up there with Google Chrome and Spotify as most important apps on your Mac.

That looks awesome, I have downloaded Better Touch Tool but have no idea how to use it, I just seem to make things worse, any tips for me? Or can anyone point me to a guide.

Although you are speculating, I find this highly unlikely. There is a significant difference between a keyboard with keystroke travel and a haptic touch screen keyboard. While it is certainly possible that someday there will be a haptic touch screen keyboard, it will not be any time soon. Traditional typists are unlikely to tolerate a haptic touch screen keyboard unless Apple can create a new technology with substantially simulates significant keystroke travel; I do not believe we are there yet, or for that matter, that we are anywhere close to this technology.

I would normally agree but Apple has placed itself in a hole with the butterfly keyboard. The only design replacement option that I see that will fit in the current case size would be a haptic touch screen keyboard. They could go back to a thicker case with a traditional keyboard but I can't see Apple ever going thicker.

I believe the keyboard was updated on the new models with something to keep crap from falling into it. iFixit did find if you dump powder/sand on it and very aggressive type you can get it to fail. Probably should avoid the keyboard if that is situation you are worried about. Time will tell though for your #1 though.

The rest are a bit subjective IMO.

I'm used to using desktop keyboards generally with Cherry key switches or even keyboards like the IBM model m which I still use to this day (aka a lot of key travel and clicks with a snap).

However I love love love the 2018 MBP keyboard and I never thought in a million years I would ever say that. Within 2 minutes of using it I was thinking "ok its not miserable", within 30 minutes my wpm was very close to my desktop, and in about 2 days I was just loving it. I never thought I would be able to type on such a shallow keyboard with as much confidence as I do.

I can't explain to you why but the way I can slide my fingers around with less effort and less fatigue replaces the tactile feel I like with real keyboards. Like I said, subjective, I wouldn't argue its better its just different and its different in a good way for me.

The strong base and solid support with no flex of the MBP keyboard makes a big difference too compared to other laptops. The older ThinkPads for example, for me the key press feels pretty good however I can't type nearly as fast due to ergonomics, design and build.

I should mention I have a lot of practice typing on the iMacs wireless keyboard too so I'm sure that helped my transition to the MBP.

I don't mind the Touch Bar, I can see some usefulness in it. Now if it didn't exist I would not complain either.

I got the 2018 13" MBP from a 2013 one, and contrary to everyone else, I seem to looove the TouchBar for all the apps I use it with

There's been a few threads on this already ......... but YES, I like the TouchBar as well.

Some believe it's going to be short lived. I don't think so. I think Apple is going to implement it on next versions of the Macbook and Macbook Air. And the MacBook Pro will have an improved version. Hopefully 2 rows.

It's ok. Doesn't really serve a great purpose. I only use it for brightness and volume. One time I used it to stop a quicktime recording.
