I'm afraid I don't have a source, and I should have clarified that I meant Gorilla Glass or something similar -- the durability tests done so far suggest scratch-resistance similar to 5/5S.

My iPhone 5 has a ridiculous amount of scratches on the screen after only a year, they can't be that scratch resistant.

Apple leather case and Apple silicone case is not compatible with the edge-to-edge screen protection, but my boss is currently using i-Blaison clear hybrid and it works perfectly fine with the ScreenMate :)

That's very surprising. I had my 5 for just over two years before getting the 6 and never had a scratch. And I was usually going caseless with it...

These aren't the usual "scratches" that normal people think of though.

Most "scratches" that drive iPhone owners nuts can only be seen if you hold the phone at a certain angle in the right light.

I go naked, without any screen protection, and the guy I sold my 5S to pointed out some "scratches" that he saw that his wife could not. I couldn't see them either, but I realize that microscratches pretty much occur no matter what (even with a screen protector there are exposed areas that WILL get them), so I told the guy that's quite alright, I wasn't going to sell to him. As soon as I said that he forked over the $400 and went on his way.

Don't let the thought of micro scratches concern you. It simply does NOT impact the usability of the screen, it just feeds into an OCD need for "perfection". I have yet to see a phone that was used for a year that is still "perfect", and that goes for the same OCD folk that take WAY better care of their phone than I do.

If people would just spend $79 on AC+, instead of $40 for a screen protector and $45 for a case, they would be able to enjoy the phone as Apple intended AND get a brand new one come resale time if they really do encounter cosmetic damage.

Unfortunately, it isn't about resale. It's about the owner needing to keep their device pristine for their own OCD. Thanks to that need (and ignorance about AC+) a whole industry (cases and screen protectors) continues to thrive.

Go naked. No screen films. Buy AC+.

You will thank me in a year. Many have. You'll never go back I promise.

Scratches don't really bother itjw. Get a screen protector. You'll thank me tomorrow. I promise.

$79 on Apple Care +??? I don't think so. More like $99 and then $79 for a replacement. So that's $178 if I have my math right. And my screen protector cost me $20 for a package of 2. And Apple will not replace a phone under Apple Care + for just micro scratches anyway. You may want to check your facts before posting your opinions. I think it is you with the ignorance about Apple Care +. And why are you so worried about people and their screen protectors? I use mine for more than just scratches, iI use the antiglare and it minimizes fingerprints as well as reducing glare. There are so many haters and I don't understand why they care about what other people do. I could just as well tell people how stupid they are for not using a screen protector but I don't care if you don't like them and don't want one.

If you spend $20 on screen protectors and NOTHING else, I'll eat my hat. Yes, I was referencing the $79 replacement fee, and YES, Apple WILL replace a device for $79 even if it has "micro scratches" (I have seen it done many times). If they did deny it, it would be silly, as the person returning it could just drop it on the way out and be covered anyway.

I have NEVER seen anyone that uses screen protectors not also use a case of SOME sort. Maybe you are the exception. I have also known most people that buy cases (I used to be one of them) to buy NUMEROUS cases over the life of the device.

So let's see:

$99 for the AppleCare+ Policy. That is partially REFUNDABLE if you sell the device before the 2 year mark. I got $47.00 back on my 5S.

$79 IF YOU NEED IT. That part is critical. If you don't, then you don't have to pay it. But if you have an OCD buyer, you have it in your back pocket.

OR

$20 for a screen protector (in your extreme case, let's assume nothing else).

So far you're $32 ahead of me.

However, six months in, we drop our device on it's side and the screen shatters. Sure, you could pay $109 for a new screen and live with the major gash on the side, but I don't have to. For $79 I get a cosmetically new device. Your $32 advantage is now $2, AND you have other damage to your device.

Meanwhile, oops, it happens again. This time it's so bad you decide you can't just replace the screen (and the protector by the way) and need a replacement device. I pay $79 and am on my way. You fork over $329.

Now I'm up almost $250.

And I've gotten to enjoy the device without anything on the screen, without a case, and without any worry.

Keep in mind that's on the extreme (BS) case that you ONLY spend $20 on a screen protector, and nothing else. Most case people spend at LEAST $100 over the life of the device on cases/protectors, and they have zero resale value come sale time (no one wants your crappy rhinestone case or old screen protector, sorry).

And let's say you NEVER drop your device. Even then, for the extra $32 I spend I have the OPTION for $79 to get a brand new one. You are forced to sell yours as is no matter what. Even if it has a dent, or a scuff on the aluminum, it would potentially matter to an OCD buyer.

AC+ and naked. Sorry.

Good points and I'm glad you actually explained yourself. I've had every iPhone from the beginning skipping the "s" versions, have never had Apple care and have always used premium screen protectors except for one time. That one time I acquired fine micro scratches and the finger prints and smudges drove me crazy. I will never go without one again. It's my prerogative and I need no one telling me it's stupid and not worth it. I never get on here and tell people it's stupid to not use a screen protector. To each is own. I just get tired of all the "naked" iPhone users on here all the time saying iPhone screens don't scratch, you don't need a screen protector, they look terrible, you're dumb for using one, it ruins the experience, yayayayayayayaya. Just let people do what makes them feel better.

After much reading of thoughtful comments I've come up with a plan:

-Use the Apple Silicon case I've already bought. It will slip out of my hand otherwise.
-Buy AppleCare+
-Naked screen
-Wait for possible scratches that are starting to bug me
-At that point, remove case
-Wait for inevitable slip/drop/dunk/whatever. I'm clumsy.
-Spend $79 for a new phone.
-Put case back on and get a protector if we're far enough from 24 months.

Ta-Da!
