Low-Power LTPO Technology Not Expected on iPhones Until 2021, Possibly Delaying ProMotion

I can see how the tech community will go mad if Apple doesn't bring 120Hz display this year... and the rest of the customers wouldn't care about that feature.

I really want a 120Hz display, but it won't make/break my decision to get a 5g iPhone. If anything, I would opt for the $650 one. It does make or break my decision to go Pro or no Pro. Not really interested in just the camera upgrades itself along with the extra 2gb of RAM.

I humbly submit this article - https://www.anandtech.com/show/1576...s-8-pro-qhd-resolution-but-still-power-hungry

I want Apple to do it right, and I know they will. Battery life is the most important part of a mobile phone. No power, no worky! Get it?

Compromising battery life for 120Hz is not something Apple will do for the spec whores in this forum.

Get used to it and get over it. Try and learn something and understanding instead of just whining like a bunch of needy teenage girls.

As I don’t see a difference between my iPad Pro, which apparently has ProMotion and my iPhone I am not sure I would care either way.

Mostly looking forward to a redesign

The guy who said the iPhone SE2 would have XR camera hardware?

He gets marketing info like launch dates right because it leaks from Apple employees. But when it comes down to actual hardware, Prosser has no clue.

Prosser actually detailed all of the specs for all four modeled and said Apple would Nerf 120Hz in iOS if they could not get the battery life where they wanted it to be. It will go down to the wire, I think.

I would expect it to be more clear by June i would think. He and max both think it’s still likely and will be figured out. It’s why they are said to be increasing the battery even more from what was reported. Don’t think they would be doing that if they weren’t confident though

How does an always on iPhone display help everyone's screen time addiction?

You averaged 24 hours of screen time: the same as every other day last week.

I just want to have my round the clock screen time in high hz... and I don’t have to finagle it to see the time if I have to pull it out because somehow my watch hand is indisposed.

Totally agree with you. I work and play on my iPad Pro 12.9 every day and don’t notice the ProMotion in action.

I laugh any time I watch a tech reviewer showing the ”benefits” of a 90 or 120hz display on a competing Android device by quickly swiping up and down or back and forth, because that is exactly what I want from my iPhone...not. I mean, really, who doesn’t spend hours each day swiping quickly up and down, back and forth? It really just bums me out that doing that on my iPhone 11 Pro Max...does nothing for me.

In case you haven’t done so already, watch Rene Ritchie’s latest YT video follow up review of the iPhone SE. It is apropos for the discussion about tech that most people could care less about, while those of us who follow tech think some of these things are do or die.

An always on phone isn’t something that I want. I wish there was a 15 second option for Auto lock so mine would turn off sooner.

I’m sure there is someone out there with a different use case that would want an always on phone. I’m all for it as long as it is a configuration option.

Those are largely marketing specs, IMO. For example, what's the display resolution? Battery capacity?

It's a recap of what we already know. UBS analysts predicted 4GB/6GB RAM in January. The 128GB base storage is obvious given we've had 3 years of 64GB. The entire supply chain knows BOE will be an OLED supplier for Apple.

Kuo is the only person who gives detailed specs.

I hope they don’t bring the always-on technology to iPhones. If they do, at least offer the toggle to switch that off.

to my knowledge every phone that has AoD (and this is going back to 2016, before the current MacBook Pro design existed) as well as every Apple Watch. series 5 all offer the option to turn off AoD

Actually supply chain analyst vs. YouTube guy.

I know who to trust.

prosser’s sources have not been wrong once this year He’s proven to be the most accurate Apple leaker probably ever and at least as accurate as Kuo (who is not a leaker but an analyst)

this guy could also be correct but it could be as simple as the new pro iPhones will not use an LTFO OLED displays this year and that Apple will be using those displays next year

none of the s20 series uses that, nor the one plus 8 pro, yet they all support 120hz

128gb was never obvious. It was obvious last year and yet Apple did not introduce it. Quit downplaying Prosser’s leaks. He has proven to be legit and claims his sources are from supply chain to Apple.

Kuo also hasnt talked about the Apple glasses anywhere near the degree prosser has, or about apple working on the next logo update

it’s not about who is or isn’t better it’s about the rumours which is why we come to this site. We like leaks no matter who they come from and let’s be happy we have another excellent source of information in prosser

Always on display is a new feature for consumers who have only ever used Apple products but in every single always on display device I have used going back to 2016, you can always choose to turn it off. it’s always been an option to turn off so there is no reason to think it wouldn’t be. The only always on display Apple currently has is the series 5 watch and that has the option to turn off so we know Apple would not force it on everyone.

He was already wrong about the SE2 having XR camera hardware. Apple won't make an iPhone without on the fly switchable refresh rate. Samsung and OnePlus require the user to determine when to activate 120Hz.

It was obvious for anyone paying attention. The iPhone follows the iPad Pro in terms of storage capacity.

I would rather Apple use a better backlight and not use PWM anymore.

Multiple sources have indicated that Apple is considering expanding its ProMotion technology to the iPhone, allowing for a variable refresh rate of up to 120Hz for smoother motion content and greater responsiveness. The feature debuted on the iPad Pro in 2017.

iphone-11-pro-display-video.jpg

The rumors began in July 2019 when a reputable Samsung leaker known as "Ice Universe" on Twitter said Apple was considering a switchable 60Hz/120Hz refresh rate on at least one iPhone in 2020. This was followed by a DigiTimes Taiwan report in October that claimed Apple would release an iPhone with a 120Hz display this year.

More recently, both Max Weinbach and Jon Prosser have claimed that this year's higher-end iPhone 12 Pro models will in fact support ProMotion, although Prosser said there is a possibility that Apple could disable ProMotion at the software level prior to the devices launching if it decides the feature consumes too much battery life.

On that note, display analyst Ross Young today tweeted that the rumored Samsung Galaxy Note20+ will be the only flagship smartphone in 2020 to feature low-power LTPO display technology, adding that the iPhone will follow in 2021.

Young believes LTPO is essential if Apple plans to support ProMotion on the iPhone, as it would allow for a variable refresh as low as 1Hz when the device is inactive to optimize battery life. As with the Apple Watch Series 5, the technology could also pave the way for iPhones to have an always-on display option next year.

Here is how Apple describes LTPO for the Watch:It is worth noting that the iPad Pro supports ProMotion without LTPO, so perhaps the feature really will launch on the iPhone this year, but it sounds like there is a possibility that Apple will simply wait until 2021.

It's unclear whether Apple even knows what product they are planning to release in 2020.

LTPO omission is not the reason to rule out 120Hz display on iPhone 12 because you can expect the battery life will still be roughly 10 hours if Apple put in 3900mAh for the 5.4” and 6.1” model.

I believe it will be possible next year.

Yup. When pundits and analysts one-up each other with "expectations", the only possible outcome is disappointment.

The specs for the iPhone to be released in fall have been locked in long ago. Apple is very clear what they're releasing.

Yes, and they can also fit a headphone jack and a Centronics connector if they make it two inches thick.

I would be mad if we don’t see 120hz but only because i was expecting it to arrive. The two sources both think it’s likely to happen but apple are not happy with the panels with the colours. They still have time to get it correct though.

to wait another year on 60z would be a blow given everybody else will be on 120hz. I have hope they will get it correct though. Guess we will know more in the next 1-2 months.

Barely… we're probably weeks if not mere days away from manufacturing ramp-up.

depends it may ship with pro motion but they may just switch it off in their settings so might not affect production. They could ship it in production and still work on getting it sorted.

You missed the considerable chunk of customers who won't have a clue what this even is but will still now go mad if Apple doesn't release it because "120Hz".

I'm hoping they go for the bigger battery just to support 120 Hz. And the day I get my new iPhone I will be turning the ProMotion feature off to gain superior battery life on 60 Hz

You won’t be able to, it won’t come with a switchable option

Whats the point of getting the pro if you are to switch off pro motion?
