Are there yield issues? Sure, all new product lines have that. But I don't believe it added $30 to the price in this case. It is all excuses.

There is only one reason why the iPad mini was priced at $329 instead of $299, where it by all logic belongs.

And that is the iPod Touch at $299.

The iPad Mini is looking more and more appealing. Damn you, Apple. Somehow, someway, I always say I'm not going to get it, then I get one.

And somehow Apple will "encourage" you to update to the retina mini with the A6X next year.:D

I hope the lack of a retina display and the old A5 (which probably will cause noticeable lag on games next year) will be enough to prevent me from getting one after I hold it for the first time. I really would like to have a retina display and a processor that will do graphically-intense 2013 games justice. I don't have a iPad yet, so maybe I could get a iPad 4 and next year if I really like the retina mini, trade in for it. That sounds like a plan.

Well, almost anything is better than owning a useless piece of consumer electronics. The argument is about whether this piece of consumer electronics is useless. :)

Honestly, I buy a lot of apple products. I'm a manager of a software co so it is what it is. But I find myself overly excited to open each package just to throw it on the couch and say, "Ok, so what's for lunch..? :-/" I WILL buy this new iPad and will spend most of my time on it reading about the next iPad... But of course my company pays for the gadgets. Point is, they're just a new screen on which to read MacRumors...

If LG's LCDs are the best then why every rMBP buyer wants to get a laptop with Samsung panel? Is it a case of some perverted brand loyalty? Not to mention those great LG TVs that people try to avoid as a plague. LG indeed does not produce a lot of OLED displays but that's because they do not know how. They tried to steal OLED tech secrets from Samsung but were caught in the process:

"Samsung Mobile Display says the leak of its organic light-emitting diode (OLED) screen technology was allegedly planned at the corporate level of LG Display, following the arrest of 11 people involved.

In a Yonhap News Agency report Monday, an unnamed Samsung executive said the company leads the world's OLED screen market with 97 percent share. However, the technology leak will cause Samsung to lose "trillions of won", the official said
."

Considering that Samsung did not invent/perfect OLED technology, that's a little disingenuous to the companies that actually did.

By the way, you seem to mix between LCD and AMOLED. These are completely different and cannot be directly compared they way you are doing so.

The Retina iPad mini is coming!

The real question is...Is Retina EVER going to come to the Mini?

Wouldn't that require a different programming size/graphics icons set, etc for the developers.

I wouldn't be surprised if a retina mini prototype already exists. The real question is will we have to wait a year for it or less? Imagine 2048x1536 on a 7.9" display, it will rock!!!

So does this mean that the iPad mini 2 will be priced lower once they get everything ironed out? Probably not.

I just spit my drink all over my screen! :p
Apple only lowers prices when a model is being replaced or discontinued.
Cheaper parts = more profit.

The reason its +50% more expensive is because apple want +50% more profit... it really is no more complex than that... they even practically said as much in the media event... they class themselves (apple) the same way Bugatti or Nike or anyother high price brands do and so think that they can command a higher price.

Maybe Samsung did not invent OLED but they definitely perfected it like no one else. 97% market share in OLED tech proves just that.

iPod Touch priced at $299 is the problem. Apple has always made their products vary slightly in price for the next model up.

Specs rise, prices fall, yields improve... time solves a lot. (Digitimes? Take with salt.)

Meanwhile, skip a meal out for two and you'll recover the $30 and be able to own an iPad Mini!

Wondering the same. Thinner? More accurate color?

Is this the Apple diet?

:apple:

If there's anything that Apple has always done, it's convincing people to pay more for smaller and thinner. Ultraportability is a feature. The original MBA was wimpy compared to their other laptops but had a pricetag of $1799-$3099. The iPod touch is a super compact, super thin, super light iPad that fits in your pocket, plus it has a Retina display. The iPad mini could easily carry the same price tag and it wouldn't look odd IMO.

Apple noted on their Investor's Call that the profit margins on the iPad Mini are weaker than most of their product line, so looks like they're willing to take a hit (for them) to keep the price lower (instead of say $349, which would have put it midway between the iPod Touch and iPad 2).

I'm stil getting one. My son wants it for Christmas (and I'll admit - I want to play with it too), so I'll be pre-ordering. I was fully expecting a $299 price for a 16GB Wi-Fi, but I'm not going to whine about the extra $30. I know my iPad has paid for itself many times over in the fun I've had with it.

I'm not surprised the iPad 2 will be around for a while, at least until they can get consistent screens for the mini. Once that happens I'm betting it's just the latest "new" iPad and mini going forward.

wait...

iPod touch 319 € 4"
iPad mini 329 € 7,9"

do apple dont want to sell ipods?
they should change the resolution of the displays. :p

So does this mean that the iPad mini 2 will be priced lower once they get everything ironed out? Probably not.

Probably not, in fact, the reason the new iPad Mini is $329 with "old technology" is so that they won't have to raise the price when it's revised with a retina display next year.

Apple has of course seen their own future, and today's iPad Mini is priced at $329 because next year's "retina mini" will need to be priced at $329, which will be a steal. :)

I think the more likely scenario is Apple will move the up the release of the next iPhone to late spring 2013, which means more whiners will show up here complaining that it's not fair that their iPhone 5 was replaced after only 8 months.

Bingo! You are 100% correct, sadly, on both points. :)

I'm still puzzling over Apple's choice to discontinue the iPad 3 but keep the iPad 2 in production. I'm actually glad about the decision, since that leaves one Apple iDevice with the old-style dock connector. I'm sure that the iPad 2 is cheaper to produce, thus they can sell it for a slightly cheaper price. But if someone is prepared to spend $399 for an iPad, why wouldn't they pony up the extra $100 and get the newest model? It doesn't seem like a big enough difference in price.

I imagine they have higher profit levels on the iPad 2 because of the older parts. I wonder how much it costs today.
