Lower-Cost iPad and iPad Mini Refreshes Draw Closer as Apple Files New Models in Indian Database

I got a question (might as well ask here). Why does every word in the article titles starts with a capital letter? It pisses me off LOL.

The current iPad can be found at $249/$329 for 32/128GB. The mini should be less...and if it is it'll dominate the low-end market.

List prices for the current 9.7” are $329/429. If the mini stays at 128GB, I can’t imagine the price dropping from $399.

I am surprised they are updating a 9,7” iPad (6th gen) now, considering non-pro users can still do most of the tasks with iPad Air 2 (and younger) just fine?

I would like to see the iPad drop a bit in price AND include new/better features while remaining the same quality build. For example, drop the $329 32GB model down to $259 and the $429 down to $329 while also giving a camera upgrade, a CPU upgrade, and maybe even 64GB on the base model.

If Apple drops the price a bit, I would definitely refresh the 3 I have in my home.

One of the reasons I would buy a few (if the CPU is faster) is to help with the DreamLab app that helps find a cure for Cancer. I brought up this topic a few months ago at: https://forums.macrumors.com/threads/dream-lab-cancer-app-your-results-please.2149553/ but nobody replied, sadly.

I could see the 399 128 GB-only model becoming a $449 128 GB-only model.
I could too, depending on what features are added.

But I don’t think just adding Pencil support would cause Apple to increase prices, the large iPad stayed at $329 when they went from A9 to A10 and added Pencil support.

I can’t see why switching to OLED on the mini would cannibalize the XS Max. But it would add $200-$300 to the price, for relatively little marginal benefit.
Depends on the user I guess. For me personally, if the Mini came out with good enough specs and OLED, I'd buy it without hesitation even at a $200-300 higher price, then trade my 7 Plus for a regular 7, and all my uses would be covered. If it doesn't have OLED I'm more likely to sell the 7 Plus and just buy a XS Max or the next version of it to cover all uses albeit not quite as well.

Yeah it definitely depends on the person. In general, a $400 LCD mini becoming a $600-700 OLED mini would kill sales volume; certainly it would no longer be bought for kids when there’s a larger model for $329. And most people wouldn’t choose a $1,100 Max just to get OLED when they can get a $400 mini that has an excellent, much larger screen (even though it’s not OLED).

My body (and my mini 2) is ready.

Mini doesn’t have Face ID so no buy
No FaceID is fine for me. Apple can even keep the mini 2's form factor and simply upgrade the internals to at least an A10 or higher, and I'll buy one. The iPad mini's size is already a selling point for me, but the current mini 4's A8 deperately needs an upgrade. The rest are simply icing on the cake.

I am wondering about the storage options too. I might consider getting one of the inexpensive ones for long car rides if it has enough storage vs repurposing an older one to do that.

I'd consider the Mini if they bump it to 256GB too. 128GB just isn't enough for me personally. I think there's a shot at 256GB, but I'm not holding my breath. It seems like Apple is treating this new Mini as an afterthought.

Too bad there won't be a Mini Pro. Can you imagine a Mini with FaceID, Pencil support, 1 TB storage and a top notch display?

Hoping for more than 2 GB RAM - in 3 or 4 years it will probably matter a lot.
Considering the iPhone 8, iPad Pro 9.7", both sports 2GB of RAM (and they were just released a year or two ago), I think 2GB will be fine. Of course more is better. :)
Let's just hope this won't be the last of the mini. I mean it was quite worrying that Apple might simply stop the lineup.

“Given that the iPad and iPad mini refreshes are shaping up to be rather minor, perhaps a press release will suffice.”

Haven’t they always had an event for a screen size change?

Who would need/want a Mini with pencil support+ the rest? A 1TB option on a low-level consumer device would be pointless as no one would buy it. Obviously the reason there isn't a smaller pro model than 11".
If you need pro features, buy the pro device.
Although Face ID isn't really a pro feature

Screen size is a preference, not an indication of a "Pro" vs "consumer" device.

A mini Pro would be awesome, it’s my preference, though at $599+ I can’t imagine there would be a whole lot of demand. But I’m sure Apple would use the design language of the 11.0/12.9” Pro models (9mm bezel all the way around) rather than have a notch. I think it’s a moot point though, since I don’t see Apple making a mini Pro.
