I chuckle when I see people with those squared-off brick-like thick things with their tiny screens. A thing of beauty? Maybe if you like this sort of a look:

At least try not to be obvious. As it stands you're way too predictable and consequently boring with your trolling.

They already sell 2 gens old for free with contract. I would way rather have this depending on guts and hoping they could get the 4inch screen in on it.

Maybe its a way to afford-ably get a newer A5 or A6 chip with better battery life and overall performance. Newer is always better. Maybe the old phones will be free on 2 or 1 yr contracts.

I really hope plastic isn't used. Apple has been good about eco-friendly materials, returning to plastic devices would disappoint me.

How is plastic not Eco-frendly? It's just as recyclable as aluminum.

This may seem a "TL,DR" post, but don't dismiss it. If anything, as mutual geeks, the science itself is fascinating. Ok...

Plastic actually causes more pollution during the recycling process (at least the tech that is widely used). This is why environmentalists avoid it. The main issue is that most people do not take the time in recycling. There are two plastic islands the size of Texas, one in the north Pacific and the other near the Indian ocean. The oceanic belt has picked up plastic items that were thrown out and created large masses about 3-4 feet deep.

The issue is more severe for third world nations in which plastic and garbage wash ashore. The main culprit is the e-waste generated from consumers tossing their mobile phones and electronics in the garbage, causing chemical pollution from the wires and batteries.

Newly Discovered 'Plastic Island' Shows Global Epidemic Worsening

Floating patches of humanity's garbage have become a permanent feature in the world's oceans and a new discovery in the South Pacific shows that this woeful trend has worsened, not improved, since the phenomenon was first discovered nearly two decades ago.

A man in Japan created a household device that uses less electricity than a lightbulb and easily converts any plastic items into reusable oil, etc. It's amazing! If everyone had one in their household, imagine the waste saved and the money gained. Of course, oil and energy companies are lobbying hard against his efforts.

Plastic to oil fantastic

Plastic to Oil Fantastic OW2.0

I seriously recommend everyone watch the YouTube video about this invention, that is currently being sold. It's incredible!

So yes, to respond to your comment, plastic is a huge issue.

The thumbprint on the right seems to cover something on the edge of the device. I wonder if the fingerprint sensor would be there?

I wouldn't mind a plastic phone especially if it had rounded edges like the 3GS. I liked when my older phones weren't so "premium" and I felt more comfortable using them as a tool instead of a fine piece of jewellery that needs extreme care. I've always found Apple's plastic era very approachable and friendly.

I don't see why the screen would be 3.5". While its a good size, it's a strain on developers and causes more fragmentation.

Hmm didn't know that, thanks.

Same rhetoric: IT SUCKS

Apple announces it

IT'S AMAZING or IT SUCKS STILL

Millions of people buy it

Okay fine.

I for one would LOVE to get a phone like this

a) $300 WTF!!!! I'd totally spend $500 for a 64gb version of this
b) 3.5inches YES! I never liked 4inches, always touch to thumb touch the top buttons
c) I don't care for beans if I drop it. It's basically a case in itself.
d) This phone would be an amazing exercise phone.
e) It can do EVERYTHING any other smartphone can do.

I use my phone as a phone. I call, I whatsapp, I listen to music, and I use strava on it. If I want to do youtube, or anything I can take out my iPad or play games on my 30 inch gaming comp.

It's one of those phones that is seriously needed. And it'll sell like bloody hot cakes, you can bet on that, obliterate all competition really. Not everyone can afford a 500 dollar iphone 5 or Galaxy S4 but everyone can afford a $300 unlocked iphone or a free with contract.

Apple always has a roadmap. i bet they make cheap iPhone 3.5 inch this year and 4 inch cheap iPhone for next year

if its cheaper...

hear is the thing.. I avoid contracts like the plague. I would like to buy the phone outright... find a decent month to month of my choice and go there. Buy a phone.. choose my carrier. Not find a carrier that doesn't give a **** so long as they get me locked in for 2-3 years.

FUuGGLY! I still don't see it's place in the iPhone Ecosystem. By the time the iPhone 5s comes out, the iPhone 4's non contract price should drop considerably.

Yet the cost for Apple to machine the enclosure still remains the same. Components may get cheaper with time, but the cost and precision manufacturing involved with machining complex metal fabrications do not. Just because the iPhone 4 is 3 years old doesn't mean the metal fabrication is any less complicated than it was 3 years ago.

This not only helps Apple put out a cheaper (and more current) iPhone unlocked for certain markets, it more importantly helps Apple maintain their healthy margins. If you look at what is happening to Apples gross margins lately, it is very likely due to the fact that iPhone 4 and 4S are still selling extremely well, yet they are charging less for them.

So now Apple will be able to afford putting more current components inside of it, and charge a low price unlocked. This really is necessary for Apple to do.

Its just funny to me how some of you talk about plastic in disgust, yet seemed to have no problem with it 7 years ago when most of Apples product line was mostly plastic (in some form).

The only thing that it's bothering me is that the Nexus 4 costs $300 unlocked and it has an awesome processor.
The iPhone is better by the OS itself, end of story, but for that price, later this year I would like to have packed something more than an A5 chip.

Relatively to the shell I don't really care; I prefer having a cheaper iPhone than not having any. For an expensive one I will have all the time after college and my MBP and iPad as metal-manufactured companion :)
