Become a MacRumors Supporter for $50/year with no ads, ability to filter front page stories, and private forums.
When a member subscribes the ads are supposed to be removed across the entire forum.
That’s nice so we’re stuck having to pay for a membership, ungodly number of Advertising if we don’t pay $50 a year. Oh that’s wonderful. I’m not paying $50 a year for this site no way.

I’m not paying $50 a year for this site no way.

While I have stated here before that I feel the contributor offerings are meager and could use some attention, I pay to support the site. To be fair, I am grandfathered in at the previous rate of $25/yr so I truly don't have anything to complain about at $2.08/mo for a site I spend as much time on as MR. I would be re-considering this if I were paying $50/yr and would be calling for better benefits more than I am now.

On to you... if you do not find value in MR at the current rate then don't pay it. Simple as that.

Again, while no ads is huge I like to support MR, the content is good and outside of a really small number of children the community is extremely helpful.

As stated before I think improvements can be made for contributors:
  • Discount codes from manufacturers
  • Discount codes from devs
  • Remove the disagree limit (again, contributors are, IMHO, less likely to troll vs simply registering a disagree)
  • If legal, extra entries in the giveaways or maybe contributor exclusive giveaways
I could care less about a native app, while I tend to "catch up" or read MR on my phone, when I post I am on my Mac 90-95% of the time. I have no interest in typing long responses on my phone. This post for instance, I would NEVER type on my phone, I would wait until I was on my Mac. YMMV

Again there are so many problems with this site both with the members. Along with paid content stories a product endorsements. Maybe some denomination of membership is worth it. But not $50. This site is a relic of the 1990s and early 2000s. Telling people to pay subscription fee to it to get rid of all the nuisances. Well it’s updated to the 2024 standards where do we have to pay to get rid of Contant that we don’t want. But Yet The nuisances are getting worse. If you want to try to make this a professional site for developers etc. well that’s all good. Remove limitation‘s to disagreement of peoples comments is more problems some. It’s nice to come here and look And see peoples comments about Apple products etc. But at times it’s no more than a hatemongering place for some.

Again, YMMV, I don't experience the "problems" you reference, that is why I support the site. There will always be trolls and children that don't know how to act. For the most part MR deals with them, the ones that remain know how to skirt the rules but can be easily ignored.

they have to do a lot of improvement to make people want to be subscriber. as it stands now people ordinary people it’s not worth it. Trolls will be here forever but other issues can be addressed.

Ad blockers exist. Like I said before I support a lower donation tier to only remove ads without the other perks.
Let us see the lower subscription cost first LOL Perks are well bribes etc. to persuade you to buy it, any way people phase it still directs you to pay.

I think the biggest problem is some of the people here. It doesn’t matter what is posted, they either want to try and police it or they are rude. Somehow they stay around.

Those that have Apple devices etc. It's nice to be here. But some stay around bashing or crying, don't buy it! or it's a waste of money etc. To each their own, but persuading me in a 1000-word Chat AI written argument. Doesn't persuade me to think differently.

That’s the entire internet. Also what you think is rude the website owners might think is great because it draws clicks. If everything is boring nothing would get much attention. One person posts about how Apple is doing something evil then all the sudden everyone wants to put their two cents in.

Somewhat agree with you, but the policy on the site doesn't make much room for the back and forth that is rude. Also how do rude people in the forums get clicks? I am not talking about on front page stories. I am talking deep in the forums. That doesn't draw clicks at all.

General rudeness doesn’t really get clicks, but provocative statements do. I guess that’s not the same. There’s not much you can do about rudeness because it’s the Internet. If you say something like “I don’t like the ads here” and I say “It’s 2024… You haven’t heard of an add blockers?” Sure that’s a bit rude but it’s just life. You can report every rude comment to the mods, but that will probably drive them crazy. Also, some people are direct about what they say without sugarcoating so it might come off as rudeness.

If you stay away from the political forms, your life will be so much better. That’s where I encountered so much hostility. I don’t see a lot of extreme rudeness or hostility in the forms about Apple products. There are some opinionated people, but I don’t think it’s rudeness.

Agreed. There is a difference between being direct and being rude. If I come across something that is overtly rude I will report it and based on the feedback I'd say at least 9/10 times I got it right. That is a good gauge for ones personal sensitivity level:
  • If one reports 10 "rude" posts and only 1 gets mod'd then one might be a snowflake.
  • If one reports 10 "rude" posts and 9 get mod'd then one is helping keep our community civil.
While I don't use it, the ignore function could some members better manage what they see.

It was $25 last time I checked, I hadn’t realised it had doubled!
People suggest it’s worth it to remove ads, but I never see ads here and don’t subscribe? I know you get access to another part of the forum exclusively, but if you don’t know what you’re missing, I don’t see the attraction of that personally.

I am sorry to take part in your reply. Ad blocks don't always work. Why do people get upset? I understand your point
The part you quoted was my example of what someone might consider a rude comment. I wasn’t really trying to discuss ad blocking. 😂

Price tag seems high for ad blocking and private forum, but I think some people just want to support the site. Not necessarily looking at the benefits.
I agree that it’s mainly to support the site. It’s probably not high for some people. That’s why I was saying maybe have tiers of support. I’m sure some would pay $100 a month but for others the $50 is just too much in this “great economy”

Yes I agree that some would want to give more and others not as much. Tiers may not be a bad idea. Not sure if that would ever happen.
