Lucas stated - many years ago - that he intended to produce 9 Star Wars episodes.

I cannot imagine a Disney take on this series...

Depp in Pirates of Tatooine?
Well, The Avengers was also a Disney film... and so was David Lynch's The Straight Story. They can make serious stuff without Mickey Mouse in it. I just fear that with Lucas staying on as "creative consultant", he might encourage them to Disney-fy it more than they would have on their own...

BTW, Lucas has been very very adamant that there won't be any more Star Wars movies:

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Star_Wars_sequel_trilogy#Abandonment_of_sequel_trilogy_.28from_1997.29

"In an interview published in Total Film in May 2008, Lucas also ruled out anybody else ever making the sequel trilogy (or other future Star Wars features). Asked if he was happy for new Star Wars tales to be told after he was gone, Lucas replied: "I've left pretty explicit instructions for there not to be any more features. There will definitely be no Episodes VII–IX."

Great and drastic moves!
This is bigger than just the movies, I believe there will be plenty of things released around the Star Wars universe.
More theme park attractions, video games, cartoons.
I just hope the Lego business is not negatively impacted by this.
If they re-issue the first two episodes, adjusting the annoying and lame scenes and expanding the battles they have a huge opportunity to regain all those bittered fans.

Star Wars is what it is, and endless opportunities for more entertainment coming!

This is the year of change!
Apple shuffling their leaders and now this!

Happy Halloween!

I don't know why Star Wars gets deified as it does. Still I'd like to see what Disney does to these films. They can't be worse than Episodes I-III!

It is a significant part of our childhood, and that is something that not everyone understands.

Lucas stated - many years ago - that he intended to produce 9 Star Wars episodes.

Thing I heard long ago (but not far away) was that Lucas outlined 27 episodes but eventually merged them into 9 story outlines. This is pretty evident in IV-VI, you can kind of see where each one has three distinct parts to it. So the Lucas canon (new weapon the will introduce ;)) covers 9 movies. If Dizz-knee goes beyond that, they will be in wholly uncharted space.

Of course, I could have been misinformed, in which case I am just spouting bs.

They'll never take IV-VI from us (know matter how they re-edit and re-re-re-release them). I'll never forget 'em. I'm hopeful Disney can breathe some life back into SW for future generations. Feels like the I-III generation got royally screwed.

I think there's much more upside to the franchise in Disney's hands than lying dormant. At least there's a chance something good can come from it, cause right now, for all intents and purposes the story is over. If it sucks, we won't be as crushed as we were with I.

I have a terrible feeling about this. That said, I'd still be interested to see what Disney does with the movies, I'm just inclined to believe it's more likely to be trash than treasure.

Give Chris Nolan free reign over the universe, even let him reboot Star Wars itself and this could be the best cinematic move ever made.

Disney hasn't done anything magical since they abandoned animated films. No music, no interesting stories, no creativity, just "look how cute CG animated toys/monsters/automobiles are." I may not be passionate about Star Wars, but when I see everything Disney acquires cheapened and destroyed, I worry.

How can anyone be happy about a company like Disney being placed at the helm? ugh. The dark side has won.

Lucas being kept on as a creative consultant or whatever sounds like a vanity title to keep him happy. If he has as much say as he did in the creation of Ep V I'll be fine with his involvement. Essentially, they need a good director and editor who can make a movie and not just have pointless dialog from two people standing opposite each other and hope the CGI will distract people.

And all the people saying Disney will have Darth Daffy in Ep 7, can we be less cliche? Remember, Pixar and Marvel are Disney companies (I'm not saying the movies were perfect but definitely better than EpI-III). They're supposedly working off the treatments for three movies from before the acquisition. So that kind of shoots the Disneyfication idea down.

I'm cautiously hopeful this could work out. We'll see.

As some one who used to work at ILM I have to disagree with anyone who states Ep I-III were bad and Disney will do well with taking over. They are leaving the current infrastructure and this is the same crew that produces the Marvel and other very successful movies. What will be the overwhelming truth is the quality of the movies will all depend on the choice of writers and director that will head the project. If these are good then the movies will be fine. I would personally love to see JJ Abrams as director. Star Wars will continue for years to come and for any of you he think it's so easy to make a blockbuster movie then you have no idea what it takes. Oh and George Lucas is worth 9 billion and your not! So get over yourselves.

Doesn't that apply for every movie, no matter what studio is in charge?

"look how cute CG animated toys/monsters/automobiles are."

Is that supposed to be a knock on Pixar? No question the cars movies sucked, but other than that Pixar has been one of the most consistently strong studios of all time. Great reviews, audiences love them, and pretty much all have made decent money.

Not to mention that Disney has done movies like Avengers. And while the sequels were lame, the first Pirates movie was great.

Your post is confusing. And someone who worked at ILM disagrees that the movies they worked on were bad? Sure, that's a totally impartial opinion.

Three words:

Jar Jar Binks

And I don't care if Lucas is worth 9 billion dollars.. Han ******* shot first!

One thing I haven't seen mentioned, I wonder if they'd get John Williams (mainly, would he be willing) or would it be someone like Giacchino or another composer?

True. He's still doing a movie or two some years (Lincoln is his next) but the first of these is three years off. At this point I think it's unlikely he'd be involved, probably a new guy using some of his existing themes as necessary.

Looking at Disney's history with purchased properties, I wonder...

Disney bought the Muppets a few years back. I have gotten the feeling that they didn't really know what to do with them. There has been one movie, a few side appearances, and not much else. The release of the Muppet Show seasons 4 and 5 seem to have stalled for some reason.

Power Ranges were bought by Disney in 2001 only to be sold back to Saban in 2011. Kind of looked like Disney ran the thing in the ground.

But there's a bit of a difference between the Muppets and Power Rangers vs. Star Wars, Marvel Comics, and Pixar. Does the current leadership come with it? When the people who crafted and cared for something stay with it, does it shine a bit brighter under the lights of Disney?

Another interesting thought. Like the Muppets were, Indiana Jones and Star Wars are already in the theme parks. Will Disney capitalize on this, over play their hand (Adventure Land becomes Indiana Jones land, Jungle Cruse becomes Indiana Jones and the River of Doom?), or leave it at status quo?
