I'm on the fence on purchasing the M1 iMac and I'm wondering how many of you are experiencing backlight bleeding or clouding on an all black screen?

Haven't seen a post about this issue so far and that's always a good thing.

The logical thing to do is make a purchase and use the 14 day return period to see how you like it.

I haven't read of any problems with the new iMacs.
I understand your logic, but I'd rather hear from owners at this time than buying it then packing it up to return it. I'm sure you can relate to the inconvenience. If this was an iPad, I would take your advice.

I have been reading numerous threads on the forum and haven't seen anything, yet. That includes the iMac threads and I don't even have an iMac lol

Even those with an iMac are quite possibly going to see this 'problem' in a different way than you do, because you may be more (or less) sensitive to it than others.

I can say that after a week, I haven't noticed an issue with backlight bleeding at all, but as much as it would be nice if that cleared the question up for you, all it means is that I haven't seen any sign of this myself.

How does @Apple_Robert reply to every thread first, every time? And always seems to shoot down down the OP. I'm sorry @Apple_Robert but you're not helping these forum users out.
I didn't say the OP was wrong. I didn't say that there has been no problems at all. I simply stated I haven't seen any mention of what the OP is concerned about.

I don't know what your problem is but, I entered the thread to help and I believe I did so in good faith. If you have a problem with my posts, you can either ignore me or report my posts to the mods.

No issue regarding backlight bleed. But I have to admit that in a totally dark room, the blacks a far from being black.

I haven’t heard or read of anything about this. Maybe jump on some of the other threads and see the comments from owners of the new iMac. Everything looks pretty positive.

Thanks. Been searching everywhere online but cannot find a single thread on this so maybe it's safe to say the screens on these new iMacs have consistent blacks. I'm just hoping this is not because people are not checking their units thoroughly.

Sorry to burst your bubble, mine has it slightly, will have to take a pic when it is dark and upload it. Also there is a slight gradient with white from left to right. Only notice it because I like perfection but I know nothing is perfect so I can't be bothered returning it because I could receive a worse one. It is only to use until the new larger iMacs are released.

Ahh ok. It seems like you are indeed experiencing backlight bleeding and some IPS glow. This tells me they are out there.

so for me extremely noticeable fading of blacks if your head is not dead centre of the screen - approaching the screen from any other angle this blacks are not black at all at night, like a very cheap telly. There are some spotlights of light bleed from various other bits - my old 21 inch 2012 1TB fusion has little bleeding at all - i wonder if the LED are just extremely bright and there's no filtering of the screen in front..... ill check with apple -during daylight of course its fine

As usual, it's a lottery on these screens. Sad to know you're experiencing these.

The closer you are to the screen of the new imac the more noticeable it is

The reason the old one doesn’t suffer from this is probably the depth of the casing….don’t forget how thin the new screen is.

I think unless you are investing in a 1000 dollar monitor this is unlikely not to happen.

I don’t think my screen per se is defective just the overall quality for this model imac isn’t best for watching movies at night-shame
as it’s plugged as a 4k screen

If you are OCD then don't buy it.
If you are normal, then buy it.
So people who are told mac stuff is the best quality only to find out it isn’t are OCD? or just expecting the sales pitch to be accurate? I’m sure someone who has actual OCD will be along shortly to point out having a medical condition doesn’t make them abnormal.

I don't think that getting a only a couple of responses indicating a problem can really be called 'a lottery on these screens'. If this thread were to be taken as a scientific representation, it would strongly suggest there is not a problem, or barely a problem.

Of course it isn't a scientific representation, but having basically invited every M1 iMac owner who visits macrumors to check their screens, it isn't a surprise that there are some who will notice an issue. There is no such thing as perfection.

So people who are told mac stuff is the best quality only to find out it isn’t ...

Realistically, according to reviewers and commentators so far at least, the 24-inch iMac screen is the best display of its type - at least anywhere near the price. I might be wrong, but that does quite literally mean 'best quality', so far at least. It doesn't mean perfect however.

for daytime use this screen is amazing-bright, excellent colour gamut etc -i just get the impression it’s just not designed for watching dark movies at night as the WHOLE screen (eg not in patches which might indicate a build issue) suffers the “lighting clouds when looking from angle angle but square on” issue-it’s not an issue per se, just not a night screen!

One case or two is enough to suggest the bad screens are out there.

It would be interesting to see a photo of the issue you are describing but I'm pretty sure it is not just faulty display in your iMac. I'm also one of the cursed ones that I tend to notice all small issues with displays and I do always check them in a dark room using different test patterns. In my case it has usually turned that if I ask others if they see the same they mostly claim no but then asking more details it usually turn out almost no one else is looking their displays so hard and most just use them in very bright conditions and never even have much possibility to see the issues...
But I'm afraid only way for people like us if we want to make sure, is taking the "hard way" and start playing display lottery which is not very successful, at least in my case.
