for daytime use this screen is amazing-bright, excellent colour gamut etc -i just get the impression it’s just not designed for watching dark movies at night as the WHOLE screen (eg not in patches which might indicate a build issue) suffers the “lighting clouds when looking from angle angle but square on” issue-it’s not an issue per se, just not a night screen!

I can't speak to this specifically, because my iMac is in use in my workplace, but I have just shut off the lights and closed my office door, and can't see an issue with uniformity of the screen at all with a plain black background selected.

However, I doubt the screens are perfect or show no abnormalities in every working circumstance. And in my experience, if someone is determined to find an issue, they usually will succeed.

Was the room completely dark during that, I mean dark like in the basement without lights on?

Not exactly, no. My office contains a few light-generating items, such as a rack of network switches, and there's light creep around the door, so it's never entirely dark. Nor would I be able to try and replicate the previous poster's issue of 'dark movies'.

I know that from my own perspective and sensitivity to light bleed and uniformity of backlighting, this screen is perfectly good. But that's just me. I know there are some who are far more sensitive and will see problems that I don't notice.

One thing I will add is that I can see noticeable issues with uniformity and bleed from my 27-inch 5K screen when I try the same thing - though given this is my workplace, I don't have a whole lot of opportunity to experiment further!

OK, I see. Without seeing the photos of the issue OP is describing, it is hard to say for use but if you see the issues clearly with 27" iMac under the same conditions that suggests there could be some variation between the units (of course there are always some variations between panels but some of the issues are usually common to certain types at least at some degree).

so for me extremely noticeable fading of blacks if your head is not dead centre of the screen - approaching the screen from any other angle this blacks are not black at all at night, like a very cheap telly. There are some spotlights of light bleed from various other bits - my old 21 inch 2012 1TB fusion has little bleeding at all - i wonder if the LED are just extremely bright and there's no filtering of the screen in front..... ill check with apple -during daylight of course its fine
Looks like typical IPS screen behavior. I had many 27" IPS from Philips, LG etc. and they're all like these. IPS can't get deep blacks and there's always some level of backlight bleeding. VA technology just isn't used on smaller monitors. I guess any of these Macs (as the old ones) will be similar, some units better, some worse.

This is exactly why I asked if OP could post photos of the issues, especially because mentioned difference from the angle sounds a lot like IPS glow and similar features of that type of screens and some of the issues do not even need to be looked at an angle. I actually exchanged my desktop PC's IPS-monitor several times in attempt to find a good one but they were all more or less the same, some even much worse.
