For a while I regretted getting m2 mac mini instead of an iMac because of the cabling mess, but I do feel its more repairable since its not an all-in-one, and I was able to get a larger monitor.
You'll also get to keep that monitor when you upgrade. Well, probably. Standards change.

Things have changed at Apple, I used to have good luck with getting things like you mentioned fixed, but Apple now takes a HARD stance against fixing anything or doing anything for anyone that doesn't have applecare on a product... even if it's a manufacturing defect. The will now flat out tell you "it's your problem, too bad".

My last two encounters with Apple have absolutely turned me in the direction of moving away from their products, unforunately.

A glaring issue is the $600 (after tax) Airpods max that keep failing people, they no longer pair with peoples hardware and then fail completely for no reason. I had a $600 pair that never left the house and were in mint condition, they started having problems and just bricked... at 14 months of ownership! Never been wet, mishandled, or abused. I took them into Apple and the absolutely refused to do anything for me even though it's well documented throughout the internet that this is a manufacturing defect in a lot of these headphones. It shocked me that they didn't care that their $600 headphones failed me after a year and told me I should have just bought applecare.

I also had a problem with the battery in my Iphone a year ago, and again they refused to do anything for me. They just don't care like they used to... it's no surprise that their profit margins are way up, they have taken a hard line stance to leave customers with defective products!

And I am THE biggest apple fan and everything I own is Apple. I am slowly and methodically getting away from Apple given this new strategy of leaving customers holding expensive useless products because of THIER manufacturing defects.
Is this a brand new stance? I've never had issues with them providing even out of warranty service (sometimes given to me for free!) for a reasonable cost. This was as recent as late last year. Has something changed since then?

24" is the problem. Would have been fine on 27" ;)
The previous 27" iMacs ran a lot hotter than the dual fan 24" iMacs. I went through a couple of them and that heat vent in the back was way inadequate when using them to play some games. Used Mac Fan Control to monitor temps back then. :)

I’m still miffed over my 2011 iMac graphics card dying - had no idea there was a replacement program or receive any notification about it. Ironically I learned of it stumbling upon this website a few years later.

And please folks don’t redirect me to the 10,000+ post thread on it - the countless “solutions” are confusing.

grrreat. got this for my parents last year expecting it to last for ages without issue for them...
and good chances it will work for them for years without issue. The report has no numbers and it is probably a small batch with a hardware issue. Because this is the internet people freak out and think every iMac is going to go bust at any moment.

Is Tim Cook Apple cutting corners?

Color me “not shocked”
I don't know the source of the current display problems, but Apple has often pushed design boundaries in ways that can lead to issues like this.

I owned a MacBook Pro from the "peak Steve Jobs" era that had the dreaded white spot issue. Apple had to replace the display, for free - twice.

It’s not just Apple. This is a great example of why we need better consumer protection laws in the form of long mandatory minimum warranties. A computer should last 5 years minimum and the warranty should reflect that. Make companies directly responsible for quality and durability beyond the initial purchase and they’ll be forced to increase quality or eat the costs of repairs rather than externalizing them onto consumers. A one year warranty is basically just for show.

It's just a reminder to upgrade when the m4 drops.
Yeah, Apple's doing us a favor by making products that'll go faulty as a reminder... Temu and AliExpress could use that line...we don't sell junk, we sell products with a upgrade reminder.

People in here acting like Apple is deliberately making their products to fail.

Truth is that it is impossible to build a product that does not fail at any point in time. It just doesn't exist - even our most basic implements like knives will eventually dull.

I had 2 systems with the Butterfly keyboards and none of 'em failed #HumbleBrag

The problem we have with quality control at Apple as they now have a conflict of interest.

It only suits their financial interest up to a certain point to make things as good as possible.

Beyond that they would like to have you have to pay even more money for extra coverage to deal with issues they created
Every for-profit company has the same conflict of interest. Doing what is best for shareholders rarely aligns with what is best for consumers, workers, or the environment.
Apple sell premium products. They should last 2 years without issues.

At minimum, Apple should offer a full 2 years coverage as standard.
Even a cheap PC should last longer than that. My last computer was a US$500 Dell laptop from 2015 that still works just as well as it did new. My only issues were incompatibility with Windows 11 and a worn out battery (consumable component, not worth replacing at this point).

Deliberate or not, they still made choices about the design and components that are now failing long before any reasonable expectation of longevity, and they should be made responsible for repairing it.

And this is why, after 9 years with a 5K iMac, I'm switching it up and going mac mini as soon as they're announced. My iMac minus being an old Intel has been an amazing machine, but the screen burn in issue is here for sure. Having an all in one that's not a laptop just isn't as smart as having the screen separate. I'm going to use a 4K monitor with the mini until this summer and see if new apple displays are announced.

My oldest computer still running is a 2007 iMac, running Ubuntu 24, the latest version, Apple abandoned that like 10 years ago.
No wait I have a silver G4 still running a custom application 24/7

Everytime I post on here about the severe drop off on quality control for these premium devices, an army of people show up and say things like “a few bad machines is hardly absolute trash quality control” or “Apple can do two things at once” or “statistically they’re better than Dell”… Apple is cutting corners like never before and charging a hefty premium. The facade is cracking. They are over-extended.
