M1 iPad Pro Over 50% Faster Than Previous Generation in Early Benchmarks

Considering the sheer power of my 2020 iPad Pro, this is just jaw-dropping.

Yeah I have noticed that some tasks that take no time on macOS have a longer more roundabout way to completing on iPadOS. Note, I didn’t say due to hardware, just the software.

i would love for iPadOS to allow for multiple apps open in windows like you see in macOS.

Seriously. I've got one pre-ordered, and when it arrives it'll be the most powerful computer I own. The only thing faster will be my gaming PC with a GTX 1080Ti, which the iPad will smoke in CPU performance but the PC will be about 30% faster in graphics... which in and of itself is INSANE given that just a few years ago that was the fastest GPU on the market.

This performance is insane! I hope that I actually get to take advantage of it; and that software takes advantage of it. Full desktop versions of apps from Adobe, for example. We shall see!

And this is why I am just as impressed you can pick up a MacBook Air with the same level of performance for $999.

Why Spend $2400 to get an iPad Pro M1 12.9?
When you can buy a Mac mini M1 with 16GB for $899?
That's more than half the price!
And you get macOS.
Not Crippled IOS with no file system for saving and downloading files.
Even Android tablets have a regular file system.

The M1 is in some cases equal to an Intel i9 processor. And in some cases the i9 beats the M1
Plus you can add way more memory to an i9 processor. not limited to just 16GB
And by the way Intels new 10nm chips released like yesterday for laptops show a 20 percent gain over the i9

So NO the M1 no longer SMOKES Intel
Intel has caught up.

That’s because it is a monster. Remember the benchmarks against 2018 MacBook Pro 15”. The A12X and A12Z are still monster processors. If they had 8GB of RAM I’m sure we’d have seen more professional app development. I blame Apple for putting such an insane level of CPU/GPU performance mated to just 4GB-6GB of RAM.

"Why get an iPad when you want a desktop Mac" is… an interesting question, I suppose. Like "why get a dog when you really wanted a cat".

That Mac mini doesn't include a display, and even if it did, it wouldn't be portable, nor would it support touch. It's basically a significantly different kind of computer.

That's an....interesting(?)...comparison. It's like "Why get a car when you can ride a bike?" At the lowest level they can serve the same purpose, but they're completely different tools. Also, a Mac Mini is useless out of the box until you add a monitor, keyboard, and mouse (which, if someone is in the market for an iPad, they may not have).

No. I do remember them claiming the g4 being the worlds first personal supercomputer and that it was classified as a dangerous weapon in some cases though.

Intel definitely smokes M1, literally. Once used M1 laptop I don’t know how you can go back to any Intel laptop that needs fans ramp up just after a few minutes of YouTube. Not to mention you are talking about i9. M1 is remarkable because it achieved BOTH high performance and low power consumption at the same time, something that Intel hasn’t been able to figure out yet after these years.

It sounds like many of you just want macOS on an iPad, which ain't happening unless Apple retools macOS significantly and makes the iPad the least common hardware denominator. It'd be like putting truck tires on a Camry.

It's a tablet, not a desktop. The iPad at most can stand to have desktop-equivalent apps written specifically for it.

So yes, Final Cut Pro, XCode, the Adobe apps, etc.

It won't take that much to get these apps on iPadOS. M1 Mac and M1 iPad are not only the same architecture, but the exact same processor! And those apps are ported to M1 Mac already so it won't take much effort at all.

Really? This is Apple's equivalent of an Intel i3. And it competes with an i9. Wait for the processor in the 16" Macbook Pro and 27/30 inch iMac.

This is the LOWEST END Apple processor...and it competes with an Intel i9. That is massive.

Yeah, the high-end Tiger Lake-H45 chips, which aren't yet shipping in volume, beat the M1 in some benchmarks, half a year later, while burning much more heat.

So, like, good job?

Yup, I had the original Surface Book with DGPU, battery ended up swelling last year so I called MS to see about a fix and they said the only thing they could do is offer me a refurbished Surface from 2016 for $600….
 
Sure, but the M1 only allows one external monitor - so now when I hear about the benchmarks it gets under my skin a little! Come on Apple, open this up a bit!

No doubt an M1X or M2 with better display support (and other additions) is coming either in summer or fall.
