Fastest street-legal production car in the world.

And you’re driving in a residential area.
Boom. This exactly.

I've pre-ordered one. I'm not sure if I'll regret it. It's expensive but I think the Display alone will be worth it; I actually have a handful of uses that involve me using my iPad outdoors in bright sunlight fairly frequently, and so the 1200 nit screen might be worth it all on its own.

But I'm anxious that the horsepower of the device will never really get to be experienced.

Now that could all be changed REAL quick if Apple, Adobe, and others released full-fat Desktop apps on the iPad. I mean FULL Adobe Lightroom, Premiere, etc.

The device can handle it.

I won't even notice the difference*

*it's my first iPad :)

Clever reply (hat's off to you) and congrats on your first. But truth is, even if it was your 7'th like it is mine (maybe 8'th, lose count), you STILL would likely not notice the difference. For a few years at least Apple silicon has been way overkill for the vast majority of tasks set to it. I honestly move between 4 different iPads from different years (oldest is 3) and only notice the difference in size, not performance. This is why some folks here are complaining that the OS has not kept up with the improvements.

New iPad owners better hope you see a huge iPadOS surprise. Otherwise, there may be a lot of unhappy people.
Well they need to be planning something. There is a config that has 16 GB of RAM. In an iPad. And with M1, software now runs on the same architecture. So it really shouldn’t be that much trouble getting Final Cut, Xcode, and Logic at least.

This is an insane amount of computing ability for a tablet.

I suppose it's "future proof". My 2018 iPad Pro is still going strong and I have yet to notice any performance issues with it. I mean, I got the Pro model because of that. I expect to get 5 years at a minimum out of the thing, which I think it totally reasonable.

But I think a lot of other users here are correct. the iPad Pro is seriously hobbled by the OS.
Given the price, I'm balking at "future proof"

You can buy an iPad air right now, and another one in 3 years, and you still haven't spent as much as an M1 iPad Pro. When that happens, there may be other new features or new hardware capabilities that your now 3 year old M1 iPad Pro can't handle. If I wanted to spend $1,200 to cover my tablet computing needs for the next 5-7 years, then that would be two iPad Airs over an M1 iPad Pro (I say as someone who ordered an M1 iPad Pro) Unless something changes; and this is the crazy thing about the performance; the iPad air can run all the software the M1 iPad Pro can run.

WWDC should be interesting. I would expect a set of new libraries that let devs take advantage of that power. More ML in iPads?

I don't agree at all. The simple act of loading a webpage, which I do hundreds of times a day, will be significantly faster. That means a lot to me. Full FCPX would also be nice for sure, but I am very happy with raw speed.

If your workflows are based in a web / browser view then you should have a look at Chromebooks.

The issue is more around having ‘proper software’ on iPadOS per-se.

I am not suggesting apps can't run well under the current OS much less iPadOS 15. I am saying that users won't see the full potential of Apple's apps and third party apps, so long as Apple continues with the anemic, slow trickle of benefits to the OS. In my opinion, we should be much father along what the iPad than what we have bee seeing.

I hope Apple wow's us with OS love at WWDC.
Don’t get me wrong, I agree on that, regardless of how good or bad an app runs on ipados, the os can be cumbersome to use.

Then again, they have to somehow differentiate both os if they want to keep selling laptops.

You can hear the whips of the masters in Microsoft’s windows ARM division smashing the troops “faster! Code faster! ARM is here for good!!”

meanwhile Intel is spending the last cash in ARM facilities and cardboard boxes for the dismissed...

I don’t know. Affinity photo works really good on my iPad pro. MS Word is excruciating, though. Is it because of the OS? Serif did a pretty good job with affinity, regardless of the OS.
For graphics I guess it works. As a developer I’d really love to do more work on my iPad. I tried it a few times actually, also recently. But it just doesn’t work so long as the OS doesn’t provide proper multi tasking, window management, etc.

I still use my iPads every day, to check up on the news, read a book, watch a movie and as 2nd external display to my M1 pro. But it could be so very much more. Especially now it really has the exact same processing unit.

You can laugh at Microsoft for their Surface commercials. But when I see developers from the windows ecosystem at work on one of those things while on the go (hello 4G / 5G without a hotspot) I am always reminded of the missed opportunity sitting back at home.

I’m really hoping that at WWDC they finally announce that iPads with an M series processor will get actual macOS capabilities. Without that I see no reason for replacing an iPad younger than 4 or 5 years, unless you break it or work in graphic design. More power just isn’t making a difference worth the investment.

So, in comparison to my 4 years old A10x powered iPad pro 10.5”, the new one has
  • 2x in single threaded performance,
  • 3x in multi,
  • 3x in graphics,
  • 2x ram.
Pretty solid improvements I think.

Going from 2017 512GB to 2021 1TB so 4x ram for me. Maybe my Safari tabs will finally stop reloading. :p

I skipped upgrading to the 2018 1TB LTE $1900. Now I get something much better for just $100 more. :D

Awesome. Now bring on the pro apps please.

i think that’s why iPadOS and iOS were split a year or two ago, allowing iPadOS to be more comparable to a full fledged computer, always connected with all day battery - the first thing I thought aft seeing the presentation was ‘if Adobe’s spending that kinda time with its apps and their compatibility with M1, Apple’s surely in the software lab with FCPX, Logic, XCode, etc on these new guys. They will already have a plethora of optimized apps from the X86 side of macOS (Adobe, MS, Reason, etc) - and the iPad is a perfect option for those using laptops with crappy batteries, w/o connectivity, and with the bulk - the iPad is an amazing music production (live and memorex) device, I’ve been using them for years. I’m also an FCP user and Adobe CC suite owner.
I’m not sure why they’d add this kinda horsepower and RAM to the iPad expecting it to continue running Angry Birds at higher frame rates. The speed of my movie exports has improved tremendously over the last couple generations, this new one will take it to a new level.
Especially dialing in room nodes, EQ and sweet seats in every seat for live show sound check.
I truly believe that we’ll see/hear about the transition of those apps from the computer to both, simultaneously appreciated by those looking for a touch screen Mac and those of us looking for more power, RAM and graphic power in the iPad, enough for parity with the common clumsy PC (when mobile)

Great - I can play Solitaire 50% faster!

Seriously, that's pretty much what I do with my iPad Pro ... :(

You’re pretty niche in today’s world. Why’d you buy an iPad Pro for Solitaire?

Great, this seems powerful and promising. Now, let me connect an external monitor and extend my display instead of mirroring the built in display

Thunderbolt 4’s included (or TB3?) - whichever is, both are compatible with display output and much much MUCH more than we’ve ever had in the past - TB connectivity opens so many doors for peripheral use, along with the introduction of Pro Apps at this year’s WWDC - it’s fairly obvious where they’re going with iPad, 16GB RAM & 2TB of High speed storage and 5G connectivity w/TB is a computer without a hinge and lack of communication built in, 2-3 hours of battery power and the headaches that come with portability. Even of the smallest laptops or 2-in-1’s. They’re junk compared to the neat, clean look of an iPad and Pencil.

I’d betcha you’ll be able to physically plug in an external display, maybe even a hub from OWC with HDMI, Ethernet, USB-3 (a & c), audio I/O, mine even has a FireWire 800 input/output!

Apple’s made a genius move IMHO with the parity between the iPad and lower powered laptops. That should in turn bring the ability to use the same apps cross plat

That sounds impressive!!.... until you realize the last iPad Pro has a two year old chip in it. If this was 50% faster than an A14 that would be impressive.

We sometimes forget how incredible a 50% improvement in a mature product is. And of course it already makes use of that power, no need to wait for WWDC... in the “pro” stuff the iPad is good at: AR, CAD viewer, illustration and much more.

The M1 is pretty much an A14 with 2 more high performance cores and 4 more GPU cores, greater memory bandwidth, Thunderbolt, etc. They're the same generation.

Perfectly in line with estimates... what these "leaks" aren't telling you is that when it comes to real world performance the increases will be far less. Should be roughly 20% faster when it comes to rendering in Lumafusion or similar.

Nothing to shake a stick at.

Is this sarcasm?
If not, microsoft Surface is a PC/Tablet/whatever you don't want, it has so many issues it's not even funny.
We got them to do out jobs, asked for iPads, even a low end, got this crap, and yes, it IS crap.

Everyone has unique experiences, my personal experiences with the more recent Surface Pro products have been excellent. Same with the new Samsung Tab S7 for isntance... it's a fantastic tablet.

That said, I still preordered an iPad Pro M1 because it's an iPad Pro, it's excellent too.
