I have a 2018 12.9 iPad Pro and a 16GB i7 Surface Pro 7. The iPad is very much a superior tablet but it also can't do things the SP7 can. If I had to choose to keep just one device, it would be the SP7 because I can live with the inferior tablet experience but not the loss of functionality I have with the iPad. For me, I see them as complementary devices. Some reasons why I would keep the SP7 over the iPad –
  • Proper external monitor support
  • Better multi-tasking
  • Full Office 365 functionality
  • Better memory mgmt. (e.g., Safari tabs reloading on iPad)
  • Ability to connect to and update other devices via USB
  • Ability to format external drives
  • SP7 has a landscape-centered front camera and supports a webcam
  • Ability to add to music library with other than iTunes or music store
  • Floating windows
  • Browser extension support
  • Better file management
  • Ability to designate default apps for file types
  • 16GB RAM without having to buy 1TB or more on-board storage
Used with a 4K monitor, USB-C hub, and Bluetooth mouse and keyboard, my SP7 has replaced my desktop but I can still use it as a lightweight laptop.

How does that compare with the new iPad Air?

update (found it):

A14 iPad Air has 1583 single core and 4198 multi-core (I thought it would be higher since everybody keeps saying the M1 is just a glorified A14)
exactly - that's what everyone keeps saying - A14 is not even close to an M1

A14 single-core is ~1600, M1 single-core is ~1700. That's actually really close.

As for multi-core, M1 has 2 more faster cores so yes, the multi-core is naturally higher.

A12: 2+4 CPU, 4C GPU
A12Z: 4+4 CPU, 8C GPU

A14: 2+4 CPU, 4C GPU
M1: 4+4 CPU, 8C GPU

M1 is what the A14X/Z would've been if Apple hadn't decided to change their nomenclature.

I have one ordered as I was due for an upgrade but honestly speed hasn't been the issue it's been the limitations of the OS

My main concern is that unless theres some sort of massive surprise, as far as I know none of the rumors have really suggested that you'll have a significantly improved OS for the ipad coming up. Certainly we could all be surprised, but I don't recall that being heavily rumored to this point

External display with display extension, plus the pro apps. That would make the impressive hardware useful.

Could be wrong but I think it supports external display already.. my own issue is that as far as I know it still would only support two apps open side by side

I personally really need true multitasking with multiple windows for it to completely replace a laptop. As it is, it can do 90% of what I need but that last 10% is really killer

Now give it the ability to run mac software and iPad software and I would be interested. Could easily be done.

I have an 2018 iPad Pro (the first of this new form factor) and I just got my wife the 2020 iPad Pro (the mild update.) Both are powered by the A12X and A12Z and honestly it screams, there is NOTHING available for iOS, including Photoshop that really taxes it. Of course having the M1 be 50% faster is amazing, but Apple needs to find something to USE this power, otherwise there is zero reason for someone like me to upgrade, and I *always* look for any excuse to upgrade. So far the rumors of iPadOS 15 are underwhelming lets hope there is a lot more to be announced that justifies these machines.

Will M2 come in fall?

Will it let go the single machine that got me through Apples entire Intel era?

Mac Pro 2009 upgraded
Single core 681
Multi core 6974

Whats crazy is that the m1 MacBooks didn't even shrink the motherboard when they switched. Imagine MacBooks with motherboards the size of the m1 iPad.
And they would use the free space for battery!! that would be amazing.
I also believe they should include a "back up" battery in the iMacs, in case of power failures you don't lose all your current work.

x86-based devices have a plethora of desktop class operating systems to choose from. So yes, they can run something better than Windows.

Entry-level x86-based Surfaces are slow like x86-based entry-level MacBook’s are slow.
Base m1 MacBooks piss all over base intel machines.
Fastest street-legal production car in the world.

And you’re driving in a residential area.
Drive it properly then.
Boom. This exactly.

I've pre-ordered one. I'm not sure if I'll regret it. It's expensive but I think the Display alone will be worth it; I actually have a handful of uses that involve me using my iPad outdoors in bright sunlight fairly frequently, and so the 1200 nit screen might be worth it all on its own.

But I'm anxious that the horsepower of the device will never really get to be experienced.

Now that could all be changed REAL quick if Apple, Adobe, and others released full-fat Desktop apps on the iPad. I mean FULL Adobe Lightroom, Premiere, etc.

The device can handle it.
What’s not ‘full’ about lightroom? Aside the file management side- which is clearly an Adobe choice.
But it's still an iPad. The Achilles heel of the iPad isn't speed
I can’t wait for you to actually see it, like your username suggests.
There is nothing that I do on my iPad Pro that comes near it's potential. I want a 12.9" screen and a magnetic 2nd generation pencil which forces me to buy and use a pro.

Even if they put software on it to make use of the CPU potential, it will still mostly spend it's time as a digital notepad.

I do edit my Podcast and the occasional family video, but seriously, this raw horsepower seems wasted for the most part. It's kind of like having a Ferrari when I only do trips to the grocery store.
So don’t buy the Ferrari then? Honestly- you just described perfectly why this machine isn’t for you. And you’re complaining about it.
And no apps to really take advantage of it because they refuse to have a proper desktop Os run on it….
There are plenty of apps that use the power already on even a 2018 iPad Pro.
Technically the M1 is a glorified A14, or rather it's a clocked-up A14X. It uses the same underlying Firestorm and Icestorm core microarchitecture, just clocked faster (since it's not constrained by the thermals of a phone) and with two added Firestorm performance cores. It's pretty clear that Apple branded the M1 the way it did so that people would drop the "they're putting phone/tablet processors in Macs" complaint about Apple silicon, and once the M1 proved itself in the marketplace they built on that by using it in the iPad Pro and saying "We're putting a desktop chip in our iPad!"
It’s a powerful chip in an iPad. Get over it. You don’t need to use it but to not see it makes you look naive at the very least.

Photoshop is the last thing that taxes an iPad. Affinity suite, shapr, Luma, plus more that I cba to repeatedly type, CAN and will use the power, and people like me will continue to benefit from it. If not you or your wife, then fine. But I tax my 2018 now- the new one will be a great machine for me.

If Apple releases Logic on this I will purchase a 1tb model. Let’s go, Apple!

Same thoughts here but I need plugins in Logic to be ported as well. That would make an instant buy once I get midi in and can trigger a sufficiently bit set of samples say from Superior Drummer. One can dream :)

Last month, Apple introduced a new iPad Pro with the same M1 chip found in the latest Macs, and early benchmark results indicate that the M1 iPad Pro is over 50% faster than the previous-generation iPad Pro.

m1-ipad-pro-chip.jpg

Based on five legitimate Geekbench 5 results (here's the fifth) for the fifth-generation 12.9-inch iPad Pro with the M1 chip, the device has average single-core and multi-core scores of 1,718 and 7,284, respectively. By comparison, the fourth-generation 12.9-inch iPad Pro with the A12Z chip has average single-core and multi-core scores of 1,121 and 4,656, respectively, meaning that the M1 iPad Pro is around 56% faster.

Geekbench 5: Average Multi-Core Results
  • M1 MacBook Air: 7,378
  • M1 iPad Pro: 7,284
  • Core i9 16" MacBook Pro: 6,845
  • A12Z iPad Pro: 4,656
It's worth noting that the third-generation 12.9-inch iPad Pro with the A12X chip has a higher average multi-core score of 4,809, likely due to statistical variation, but this still results in the M1 iPad Pro being 51% faster, which lines up with Apple's marketing claim that the M1 iPad Pro is up to 50% faster than the previous generation.

The benchmark results reveal that the M1 iPad Pro has virtually identical performance as the M1 Macs released last fall. The M1 MacBook Air, for example, has average single-core and multi-core scores of 1,701 and 7,378, respectively. Impressively, this means the M1 iPad Pro is faster than a maxed-out 16-inch MacBook Pro with an Intel Core i9 processor, which has average single-core and multi-core scores of 1,091 and 6,845 respectively.

As for graphics performance, the M1 iPad Pro currently has an average Metal score of 20,578, which is up to 71% faster than the previous-generation iPad Pro with the A12Z chip and roughly equal to the graphics performance of M1 Macs.

The new iPad Pro became available to order starting April 30, with a launch expected on May 21. Reviews of the device are expected to drop next week.

Okay that's nice to know I guess... Be more interested to see how it compares to iPad Air 4
