I'm looking for USB-C cables for my new MacBook Pro to go to a Dell 4k monitor and what I've been reading is that you have to get a cable made specifically for that purpose (as well as the USB-C moving data around). It seems that these cables should be somewhat limited in length and that they run about $40. I got one with one of my monitors which is supposed to work really well but I can't find it. I read a review on one of the pricier cables that said that the Apple cable didn't work for this purpose.

Good luck. I need a USB-C - USB-C cable to go from my MacBook Pro to the U2720Q.
Length of the cable matters? That seems highly unlikely. Although I have seen some weird solutions that have worked for some people...

Good luck to you as well ?

I'm using HDMI to HDMI provided by Dell with S3221QS monitor, to my M1 macmini and getting slight flickering from time to time, so it didn't help me unless there's some other magic cable from Dell.

Btw as for U2720Q, in case it also flickers, there is DDM for mac which seems to support this model:

I just ordered a Belkin Thunderbolt 3 Cable at 1.6 feet https://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B0725DW6D3/ref=ppx_yo_dt_b_asin_title_o00_s00?ie=UTF8&psc=1 and they have three options:

1.6 feet Supports Thunderbolt/Ultra HD displays
2.6 feet Supports 4k/5k Ultra HD displays
6.5 feet NOTE: This cable does not support DisplayPort

So I am assuming that cable length does matter. 1.6 feet is pretty short but I think that I can get it to work with the MacBook Pro. If not, then I'd use it with the Mac mini which I can put behind the Dell monitor. My ideal use case is that I plug it into the MacBook Pro and that it's a one cable solution to connect my keyboard and mouse.

I have a Dell S3221QS that had been hooked up to my late 2015 MacBook Pro without issue for quite awhile. It also had been a Windows 10 monitor off and on. As soon as I tried hooking up my new shinny M1 Mac mini the frustration set in. Every cable type and quality was better or worse but nothing ever worked as it should. Apple support started out so basic even though I said I had tried all "level 1" solutions. I guess I wanted a quick fix and was impatient with Apple's process of diagnosis so I dropped the issue.

My solution was to buy a new LG 27UP-600W from Best Buy for less than $300.00 and go with Type C to Display port. Text is awesome and brightness is great but I miss the curved screen and size. Its been a few days and no issues.

This is what I've found from Dell.

I really didn't think it would take me another extra 150€ on top of the Monitor just to use it properly ... Should have went with something else/more expensive to avoid this.

Tried a lot of stuff, ordering this adapter is the last resort. I will let you guys know how it goes.

Have you found this solution working?

The cable should arrive today and I want to try it out with my mini and my MacBook Pro. I really like the idea of the USB-C cable delivering the video signal and the USB signal so I only need one cable to the monitor's port hub. I only have one USB-C monitor though (U2720Q). The other two (U2718Q) are your standard MDP/DP/HDMI inputs.

I don't actually see the U2720Q for sale at Amazon nor do I see a U2721Q listed at all. I am wondering if Dell has discontinued the Ultrasharp line or if supply-chain constraints means that they can't make them right now.

The cable arrived and I hooked it up and it's very nice. One cable to the monitor and it displays to the monitor but also sends power back to the MacBook Pro and connects to the USB ports. It's basically a one-plugin solution. I'm generally used to plugging in a lot of ports when bringing a MacBook Pro to be used in desktop mode.

Means no more flickering?

I've never had any flickering issues. I have Ultrasharp U2718Q and U2729Q monitors and have used them with a wide variety of computers (MacBook Pro 2014, 2015), Dell XPS Studio, Customer Windows build, 2020 Mac mini, 2021 MacBook Pro with a wide variety of connections (DP, MDP, HDMI and now USB-C) with no problems that weren't user error. I had some unidirectional cables that I used in the wrong direction and had flickering with them but those were fixed by getting the right cable.

The Dell U series monitors are their top-end models and seem to work in just about any situation, as you point out. If I buy a Dell monitor I only go with the U series monitors. Unfortunately, they are all out of stock now.

I went ahead and sent my Monitor back. Will be really careful when buying a new one. BenQ seems too be a good choice. They even offer "M1 Compatibility" option which makes it easier for us to find something that will work.

I am in the same boat except I can't the screen to work with my Mac at all!! Would love to hear the solution!

Edit - using a higher quality hdmi cable I was able to get readable QHD or 4k but everything too small. No flicker so far.
Try downloading the app better dummy, that lets you choose whatever screen resolution you want. but setting up the app was a little confusing

I have a Dell U3818DW running off a 2018 Mac mini i5 with 32 Gb, connected via a short 50cm USB-C to USB-C cable at a the monitors native resolution of 3840x1600. No big issues and very happy with the display, though sometimes takes like 5 secs to wake up.

Now awaiting the expected new M1Pro Mini and hoping that it will work with this monitor.

Anyone has this monitor attached to a 2021 M1 Mini?

Hi all,

Just wondering, what color settings are you guys using/ did you guys change anything rather than the normal plug and play? I too am using an M1 Pro macbook, but however, I've noticed the color seems pale ish/ not as rich as when I used my Xbox series x with the monitor.

Any suggestions?

Has anyone found a consistent solution to this problem? I just got this monitor to go with the Mac Studio but now I'm thinking I should probably return it.

After struggling with this as well for months, on 5/22/22, Dell has released a firmware update for the S3221QS Monitor taking my firmware from M2C101 to M2C103.

In the hour since upgrading, my Mac mini M1 has not flickered since! It's connected via HDMI. I haven't tested DisplayPort yet.

I hope this stays the case, has fixed the issue, and works for everyone else!

Thank you so much for posting this

Recently received a Dell S3221QS monitor for my Mac Mini and just about nothing has worked out right. Here are the problems I've experienced:
  • Connecting USB-C to DisplayPort (my preferred method) results in intermittent screen blackouts, approximately four seconds on, two seconds off in a repeating pattern whenever I wake from sleep or wake from the display off time out. I can usually get this pattern to stop if I unplug and replug, but not always.
  • Connecting HDMI to HDMI does not have intermittent blackouts, but goes right from 2560x1440 to 4K for scaled resolution options without anything in between. My preferred scaled resolution is 3008 x 1692 as everything is too small in 4K and 2560x1440 is not an upgrade from my previous monitor.
  • Whether connected over HDMI or DisplayPort, there is consistent screen flickering either when I play videos or when vertical scrolling through high-contrast (i.e. a lot of dark blacks and bright whites) websites.
    • I also sometimes get vertical lines appearing on the screen in addition to the flickering, but not always.
Ironically, I have not experienced any wake from sleep issues connecting over DisplayPort or HDMI (though, as I mentioned, DisplayPort almost always wakes from sleep in the intermittent blackout state). I have tried multiple USB-C DisplayPort cables, 1.2 and 1.4, and even tried using a USB-C to DisplayPort adapter with a conventional DisplayPort to DisplayPort cable. None of these helped. I am also on the latest Big Sur — 11.2.3.

Does anyone have any suggestions for any of these issues? Should I just return it as I am still within the return window?

Also, though this is something I'm less concerned with, I had been planning to use this new 4K monitor as my main with my old 2560x1440 monitor in vertical mode, but when I tried connecting USB-C to DisplayPort for the 4K and HDMI to HDMI for the old 2560, I couldn't get anything to show up on the 2560 at all over HDMI. This old 2560 did have the wake from sleep issue when connected USB-C to DisplayPort, not everytime, probably 50-50, but it at least has always been fixed with one unplug-replug (unlike the 4K over USB-C to DisplayPort which has sometimes needed multiple unplug-replugs).
You may want to try a USB-C to DisplayPort cable.

I had the same issue with my MacBook M1. After I updated the firmware yesterday, it's good so far. The firmware can be updated with a Mac. I am using a USB-C -> DP cable.

I'm eyeing to get this monitor for my m1 macbook pro. Is the flickering issue completely resolved in your monitor after weeks of updating latest firmware? The reason I'm asking because there is a user in reddit claiming milder flickering issue still persists after updating M2C103 firmware, want to know if that happens in your monitor too.

No way, the monitor will never work with M1 based devices. Even with the new dell firmware the flickering is there. Don't buy it if you have a mac m1

mine has been good since updating the firmware. but if you are looking to buy a new monitor, i wouldn't recommend this one given there are still many people facing this issue.
