I hoped that it was just a Safari bug but it turned out that google chrome is also affected (see my original reply).

So it’s either a Monterey bug or a cpu issue.

It appears that the issue happens when scrolling in comments - is the video off-screen when this happens? If so, does it happen quickly after the video leaves the screen?

I felt like I was missing out too, so just tried to replicate the bug on my Monterey intel 16” MBP. Even though my display is only 60hz (like every other M1 MBP in safari it seems), hard as I might try I just couldn’t. At least my whole house is warm now 🤣 Guess it just works.

It happens the very moment the video leaves the blurred area behind the menu bar when the last horizontal line of the video disappears.

Scrolling in the comments has nothing to do with it. :)

How about doing a Apple Configurator 2 (DFU) restore to factory settings by Apple Store staff? The FW/OS might need to be totally restored.

YEs, that is worthwhile trying and since I posted earlier I've also replicated the problem in SAFE MODE, but a Revive/Restore to replace everything directly is a good idea and I'll report back after trying. Thx for the input :)

Thanks for reporting back. Did your machine stutter ever so slightly while moving the video out of sight?

So we have another machine NOT having issues with these specs:
”M1 Pro 16" 10c/16c 1TB model” SG
none whatsoever. If you're asking about the 120hz refresh in safari - at times WHEN NOT continuously touching the trackpad to scroll you can tell it's not quite full 120hz. if you're fingers are continuously gliding on the trackpad while scrolling it does scroll at 120hz. other than that issue there is zero hard crashing/rebooting for my machine. Doesn't do this with any YouTube video (7 so far tested in 4k60pHDR). no crashing in google videos (paid HD content) and none in appleTV library (4K dolby vision content streamed).

I just had a chat with my friend at Apple (works on the neural engine) and made him aware of it :)

Now when I think about it, Apple TV app crashes on certain shows on Google Chromecast with Google TV device which people have mentioned it's related to HDR so whenever Apple fixes the Macbook issues hopefully it'll also fix the Chromecast issue.

Had this issue myself for the same video twice in a row. I sent a bug report to Apple.

Haven’t seen it since and I’ve watched dozens of videos

Why do people think that posting ‘notes to Apple’ in other websites is a ‘productive thing to do’?!? Maybe go to Apple’s ACTUAL FEEDBACK PAGE and send them your feedback!! Otherwise you may as well tell your dog!

Also, I totally expect stuff like this will come up for a while as the new M1 MBP’s with OS Monterrey start to do more and more. It’s a brand new product, so you get to experience the bugs in real time. All this will probably be a non-issue in 6 months… if people actually reported these using official means, not Twitter rants.
Only reporting with apples official forums /feedback page or tools let's apple quietly sweep it under the rug.

After testing 10 machines (14 and 16 inch) only a single one did not crash.

The issue has nothing to do with scrolling the comments section. It happens under these circumstances:

How to reproduce the CPU panic consistently within seconds

  1. In Safari* open any YouTube 8K HDR video.
  2. Select Settings/Quality/2160p60 HDR.
  3. Start playing the video. You may pause it.
  4. With the trackpad scroll down slowly. As soon as the video leaves Safari's blurry area behind the toolbar your MacBook Pro may crash. This is the critical part.
* This also happens in Google Chrome 95.0.4638.69 (Official Build) (arm64). (Thanks @UncleGuido)
Sounds like maybe it's something with dynamic resource management of some kind. This kinda stuff is pretty common when new OS software is launched alongside new generation hardware. It's really bizarre and stupid to me that Apple seems to insist on releasing a brand new OS when they release new hardware. Why not minimize the places where things can go wrong by running the new machines on a stable OS? New, new, new... Annoying and a waste of users' time. (Not to mention the fact that devs wouldn't have to get support for a new platform AND a new OS out the door.)

EDIT: Never mind.

Changing profiles seemed to mark an improvement, but it ultimately just took longer to crash. Could be a coincidence.

I remember a time when more people (like those above) tried to isolate/solve problems rather than post inane comments. That IS cool.

Hat tip to JamieLannister, Ancandis, and others for putting in the work!
Maybe apple engineers are stoned off kale chips and suffering PTSD from staying in their homes for 18 months. We pay apple to fix these obnoxiously stupid bugs.

With that said… Relevant links:

I’m not sure which product the spotlighted problem would be most relevant to. It would depend if users have the same experience in Web browsers other than Safari — then go MBP feedback.

I successfully repro'd in the 12.1 developer beta, and linked the permalink within this thread that contains the steps to repro. ?‍♂️

"Maybe apple engineers are stoned off kale chips and suffering PTSD from staying in their homes for 18 months."

Nice burn. But sadly typical, here.

"We pay apple to fix these obnoxiously stupid bugs."

Well, not really. But this one of course will be fixed.

I've never written or helped write a computer OS, but I wouldn't be shocked if MacOS clocks in between 10 and 50 million lines of code (maybe someone here who worked on developing MacOS can weigh in with a better number). And after extensive beta testing it gets sent out into the wild where tens of millions of people, using different Macs with different settings, and different use scenarios, many obscure.

Perhaps you're expecting 100.0% perfection 100.0% of the time right out the door. Tell me where I can find such an OS to purchase?

What's really gratifying are the handful of people here up above who rather than resort to immature burns, instead are trying to isolate the issue and solve the problem. Much respect!

Tried to replicate too, and couldn't. As for the machine stuttering, I won't call it that. The scrolling seems to pause when you reach the end of the current comments list, while more comments are loaded.

Interesting. That behavior is far more than a stutter on iPads, at least on my 6th gen. The entire browser UI freezes for several seconds each time more comments need to load (using Firefox for iOS). It’s extremely irritating. I don’t know if it’s poor or attempted clever programming on Google’s part. Either way, it seems very inefficient.

On Chrome for macOS sometimes none of the comments load (fixed by a page refresh).

Despite how CPU intensive the MR forums can be, even the pages here don’t cause that behavior. :)
