I do a fair amount of editing on large files (usually 1.8-2.5gb). Some of the plugins are ready and some are not. I also then wonder if when an M2 type chip comes out, is that going to cause yet another delay in plugins being released. The reality is that if these companies wanted to prioritize re-coding these plugins, it would not take them 7 months to do it.
Thanks #or clarifying. Pretty big files you've got there. My first mac was a base 8/256 MBP13 in 2014 and of course, within a year I started doing software development, even dabbling a bit with AI. So I kind of regretted speccing it just right. I'm not planning on making that mistake again. I'm using short sections of recorded audio now but hey, who knows in a year I'll be in your shoes as well :)

Intel is a superior work machine, besides a few benchmarks where Apple is good in video encoding it gets wrecked in a lot of uses and functions outside that.

boot camp is priceless.
Besides Apple forcing you to upgrade by pushing you, it’s a inferior product atm.

Wait a couple years.
Hi Alexander William,
Can you be more specific? I just got a M1 8gb memory but as I read external drives it seems slow to the point of Finder not releasing the external drive. Is this an example of the processor or the memory? Would Intel (with 16gb) work better on processing large files? Or should I request the "custom built" M1 16gb? Thanks so much!

if you can wait, wait. if you can't get the M1.
you can always resell the M1 at some minor loss.
If you get the M1, make sure all your apps work through Rosetta or native,
and figure that out within the first 14 days, so if you really need to return for Intel, you have that option.

It’s fact

It’s not a better product, usbc blows emulation is not superior you cannot game on the Mac really anymore, nor install windows to play unplayable games.

the m1 struggles with usbc hubs and was getting killed by them ( amazing product) struggles with tons and tons of issues from external monitors to ssds killing themselves rapidly.

it’s a generation 1 product, and beyond battery life and video editing, it’s not superior to intel.

I own both, and use them professionally.
Intel is a more professional tier tons of people in the office can’t even use m1s because of external monitor limitations.

but yes it’s a superior product, no. It isn’t.
It can’t even do a ton of stuff intels can, basics in computers for years
I am sensing that getting myself the Intel with 16gb would be better for the long run. I manage files and data mostly. I don't install large graphic programs, although I would like to learn one of the architecture apps. I just want something I can rely on for a while.
The usbc hubs are a pain since they can be flimsy small and not travel accessible if a full hub, but won't that be the case with either MBP?
I do not have an external monitor - but really would like one with the amount of screen time I do.

I am still within my 30 day trial and want to exchange the M1 8gb (which has been slow accessing, reading, searching through my many files) for the Intel 16gb or wait for the "custom build" of the M1 16gb.

Thanks much for anyone's input.

M1 destroy an intel mac in performance. For example, my Lightroom performance has increased 2X and video editing with Final Cut Pro is 3-5X faster (this is 2018 6 core i5 vs M1 both with 16GB RAM). Your use case will vary in performance though.

I think you if your M1 is slow, it is just running out of memory. You will just need to get one with 16GB ram.

Apple Silicon is the future - I just don't see Apple putting in the effort for Intel Macs in the future except for the Mac Pro and we're just talking another year or two there. The current M1 systems have some issues and hopefully they are mainly corrected with the M1X MacBook Pros coming out later this year. I have my legacy MacBook Pro systems if I need x86 but am so looking forward to the battery life and running cool from the M1X systems coming soon. I do not have an M1 MacBook but I see them in use regularly and see what they are capable of.

2018 intel vs 2021 m1. Not a great comparison.

Well the 2020 intel MacBook Pro isn’t any (at max 20-30% faster) better than the 2018 model while the M1 is sometime up to 5 times faster. The M1 runs rings around any intel MacBook Pro In performance.

the 16" 2019 macbook pro is still the best macbook ever. who knows what will happen in the future, but we are talking about today. your window to get one with apple care is closing though.

It's more likely just issues with Finder. Hopefully Finder reliability is improved in Monterey.

Depends what u do. The m1 machines have subpar performance in gpu. Compared to the 16 with amd 5600. My 16 with 64g ram and 5600m gpu is still the fastest mobile solution for film and video. M1 is still not even supported in a lot of software for video editors. You can't even run m1 macs if you wanted to.

What is the issue with external monitors and M1 Macs? My daughter has a base M1 MBA for grad school, and she uses it with a standard 23.5 inch 1080p monitor. No problem. Is it multiple monitors or super high resolution monitors that present problems for the M1 Macs?

You can only use one external monitor natively on the M1 MacBooks. You can drive at least two with Intel MacBook Pros. Possible three - I haven't tried it with the newer MacBook Pros.

Got it. Thanks.
