Just cannot do the notch.

agreed - notch is one of the worst "features" Apple has ever brought into their product lines, and it can't die soon enough.

since they increased the price for the M2 MBA (it now costs the same as the 13" MBP when equally spec'd), the M1 MBA still seems like a better deal for most people actually - especially since the M2 version will probably have slower SSD speeds for the base 256GB models (and possibly even the higher capacity ones?), and seems to be more likely to throttle given M2's hotter temperatures. won't know for sure until it's actually released though...

for those concerned with M1 laptops not having MagSafe, do a quick search for "usb c magnetic adapter" - you can find a ton of options for ~$10-25 or so which duplicates this functionality.

and it doesn't seem like many people know this but for those wanting >1 external monitor support on lower end macs which don't natively support it (like MBA or 13" MBP), there are many DisplayLink adapters which make it possible (search for "external display adapter") - just make sure you pick one that supports "extend mode" on MacOS (rather than just mirroring)...

Hate to say it but it feels there was alone missing at the end:
This message was brought to you by Apple.
Didn’t MR do a similar article the other week - why another. And 45g difference, fgs.

Happy owner of M1 MBA, no need to upgrade to M2 version yet. I will wait for real upgrade...

yes.

„ The M2 MacBook Air includes a new 1080p FaceTime HD camera with twice the resolution and low-light performance of the previous generation, according to Apple. This is sure to substantially improve the video calling experience compared to the 720p camera of the M1 model“

might be worth it to buy a new discounted m1 when you see the sales. i have the m1 mini and i love it. my laptop is a mid 2012 intel mbp

I think it was, but I also had other reasons like MagSafe and rectifying my M1 MBA decision to go with the base model, because it was clearly not enough for basic things I wanted with 256 GB storage and 8 GB RAM lol.

Ended up getting a M1 Pro MBP with 1 TB and 16 GB of RAM because the prices were getting close to the MBP with the M2 MBA and the additional expense was worth it for HDR, ProMotion, bigger screen, and even higher pixel density, with better speakers.

I’ve been struggling with deciding on an upgrade to my nearly 10 year old retina MBP. The M2 air looks great. But the 14” pro also looks appealing with all the extra ports. I could probably hold out longer, but I would love to start transitioning to a new laptop before this one dies. So many options!
It all boils down to how much you want to spend.

Because it's either $700 or $1000 more depending on processor?
The Air with 16gb and 1 tb is around 1900, the pro is 2200 for the same specs. Thats a 300 dollar difference, not factoring the sales that the pro typically has, which go from 200 to 300 off. If you wait for a sale its just lets say 100 dollars difference between the two. Thats something to consider.

My bad—miscalculated. $300 is definitely a much smaller bump and worth considering moving up to the Pro. I am probably going $1699 for 16/512 since I don’t do high end video and have plenty of external storage options.

Can you charge the M2 Air using one of the Thunderbolt ports, or only with the Magsafe charger?

I like that the M1 Air costs me $0 at this point and I have no complaints with its performance currently
The M2 Air is at least $1100

"Worth upgrading"? From a 1-year-old computer? Don't be ridiculous. Why would anyone even suggest that this is a legitimate question? Comparison of the new model to last year's, yes...but most people aren't considering upgrading a brand new computer.

No way I would even consider upgrading my MacBook Air M1 with 16GB RAM and 1TB SSD for the new M2. The new M2 is a great machine but my MacBook Air M1 is more than adequate for my needs for the next few to several years. Personally I prefer the M1 Air design better than the M2 Air design, and I dislike the notch. I don’t ever use a front facing camera anyway, so they could leave that off completely as far as I’m concerned. The better screen on the M2 Air is a plus, but I have a 27” 4K HDR monitor attached to my M1 Air so the Air screen isn’t that big of a deal to me.

I definitely don’t recommend anyone getting the lowest spec M2 Air or the M1 Air either. Get them with 16GB RAM and as big of an SSD as you can afford in order to future proof it for years to come.

I snapped up the 2020 Intel based MacBook Air when the M1 model was announced because I need to run Windows occasionally for work. I’d love to upgrade but not until Microsoft releases Windows 11 for ARM with x64 emulation that works well enough to run most standard x86 and x64 Windows apps.

I’m not looking to game or do any kind of media editing. It’s simply that most line of business apps that companies use to run and manage their business are Windows based and I need that software to run on my Mac. I refuse to carry two laptops when I travel and even though I can usually connect over the VPN and use Remote Desktop to access my work system sometimes it’s not an option. Think power outage at the office, Internet outage at the office, a server down for maintenance at the office, firewall issues at the office, etc. and I need certain apps installed and accessible locally.

My needs sure don't require an MBP. I just want enough performance to not annoy me like my 2020 i5 MBA does. I never take my Mac anywhere so the format and the extra weight is no issue to me at all. What I get for roughly $300 more for the 14" Pro vs an M2 MBA the way I have priced both has me thinking of going with a Pro.  will give me so little for my MBA I just might just give it away to someone in the family or sell it cheap for some life karma points.
