For a case that’s as thick or thicker than the Apple Pencil, that would work. For the current Apple keyboards and pencils, the stylus would be pressed against the screen if it was like that. They could squish the stylus like Microsoft did with the Surface Slim Pen 2 in the picture, but then you have a stylus that’s not round which, for some, might cause more irritation than “Where to put it!?”

The first quote I found for the Surface Slim Pen 2.
“Microsoft’s Surface Slim Pen 2 resembles a carpenter’s pencil and it works even better when paired to Surface Pro 8. But I find it awkward to use”

I have read a lot of quotes in other reviews saying that the Surface Slim Pen 2 is a delight to use. But that is completely besides the point. You took one sentence out of context from my post.
The gist of my post is: Apple with a huge R&D department can not find a way to integrate the pen with an iPad without an adapter which has to be bought separately? Where is the thinking out of the box from yesteryear? I get the impression Apple can not "innovate its own ass" anymore. Or maybe the 'pen' department does not communicate with the 'iPad' department?

How did I take it out of context? The context was “what about a charging system like this” and, yes, that form of charging WOULD have been possible, but comes with other trade offs. Just like what Apple came up with comes with trade offs.

Apple did what they did some won’t care, some won’t like it. I don’t like it, but, then again, I’m not buying it so…

I would actually prefer if the iPad Pro was more like the Surface Pro and would have significant more use for my iPad Pro if it was. I wouldn’t have to travel with a Laptop for Photo/Video and an iPad.
I’ve had 2 Surface Pro’s and loved them save 1 thing: No iMessage.

I think people underestimate how useful an iPad that had a full version of MacOS when a Keyboard/Mouse is attached and goes into “tablet mode” like the current iPadOS would be.
iPadOS is literally crippling the devices hardware.

I'm not saying iPadOS shouldn't be improved. It limits the user experience in many ways; however, the remove those limitations is to make iPadOS better. Not making it a macOS tablet. This is my opinion of course. Bringing iPadOS a proper external screen support, external device support and more advanced apps is to way to go. Using only iPad Pro as my only on-the-go device is my wish as well. I agree with mode change system when keyboard/mouse attached would be a good way. With a more advanced iPadOS of course, not macOS as it is now.

What is with all the outrage over a device being updated regularly?
The fact M1 iPads owners don’t have a reason to upgrade doesn’t mean Apple released a bad product, is just the same good device, updated with the latest internals.

The problem with the Pro iPads is the software, but that’s another discussion altogether…

Because if they didn’t update as often, there wouldn’t be as many opportunities for regret for the systems folks have already bought. The outrage helps though, as it’s easy to feel good about what you have ONLY if you SUUUUPER hate the things you don’t have. Of course, that means maintaining a fiery core of continuous hate, but such is the cost of feeling good about what you own. 👍

Personally, I like once a year for all products. That’s the tech norm for most companies. Apple follows the annual update for most things, but often they don’t, especially with Macs and non-base iPads. While base iPads have been updated like clockwork once a year, other iPads are generally one year or 18 months inconsistently, or in the case of the mini, even longer.

I never get outraged anymore at missing out on features. It’s a fact of tech life. The second you take delivery of a product, consider it outdated already because something better is always coming. The M2 Pro/Max MBP’s are coming, but I know I’m not going to upgrade because they are too expensive to upgrade annually. I accepted a long time ago that I wasn’t going to buy one no matter what features they release. Would I buy one in another 18 months? Maybe. But probably not. I kept my 2012 MBP for a very long time and didn’t upgrade that until the 2019 first version of the Intel 16”. I completely skipped the whole butterfly keyboard fiasco. After that, I didn’t upgrade till the 16” M1 Max MBP. While 2 years was a bit early, a complete technological overhaul warrants it, even if I did have a tiny bit of regret for having bought the 2019 MBP. I gave it to my daughter. :)

Likewise with the M2 iPad Pro. I have no interest in it whatsoever. Next year will come the redesign since the upgrade cycle finishes with the one-device-at-a-time upgrade of the base iPad. The cycle starts over again now with the Pros up next. If it’s compelling, I might buy one. If it’s not, there’s always another one coming.

From a certain point of view, Apple really only updates iPads (and Macs and iPhones for that matter) every four to five years in any significant way outside of spec bumps.

I say I want it to run macOS because I want full desktop apps (not just those in the App Store), I want PROPER file management (meaning stuff can be saved and accessed outside of apps (looking at you photos and music) including network drives (not the half ass “Files” app).

So basically macOS.

Well I say “thank you Apple for bringing out the new model”….. Now I can go to Amazon etc and pick up an M1 12.9 for a fair slice of cash off what it was selling on Apple’s shop.👍
